Description

H. DEMERS LOOM STOP MECHANISM Filed July 12. 1926 mam. M i Q RI- Patented Dec. 11, 1928.
UNITED STATES HONORE DEMERS, OF MANCHESTER, NEW HAMPSHIRE.
1100M s'ror MECHANISM.
Application filed July 12, .1926. senru No. 121,755.
This invention relates to looms and has for its general and principal object to prevent an im roperly positioned shuttle from being pic 'ed. A more particular object of the invention is to provide means for stopping the loom Whenever a shuttle is held in the shuttle box at an improper time, said means operating to stop the loom upon the rearward movement of the lay, or prior to the picking operation, as distinguished from stop mechanism of the type in which the loom is stopped on the forward movement of the lay when there is no shuttle in the shuttle box. The improper retention of a shuttlein the shuttle box may result from a number of causes, as when a bobbin becomes jammedduring the weft-replenishing operation, so that the shuttle cannot be thrown out of the shuttle box, or when the shuttle-changing mechanism of a pattern-weaving loom breaks, permitting a shuttle to enter the shuttle box at one end of the lay when there is a shuttle at the other end of the lay. hen any of these events occurs, it is desirable that the loom be stopped immediately and prior to the picking operation, and the present invention rovides means for accomplishing this result m an effective manner. Incidentally, the mechanism hereinafter described also oper- 80 ates to stop the loom in the case of breakage of the protector shaft spring which normally exerts a pressure upon a shuttle in the shuttle box through the binder and binder finger.
The foregoing and other objects of the in- 5 vention, together with means whereby the latter may be carried into effect, will best be understood from the following description of certain forms thereof illustrated in the accompanying drawings. It will be under- Stood however that the particular constructions and arrangements described and shown have been chosen for purposes of exemplification merely, and that the invention, as defined by the claim hereunto appended, may be otherwise embodied without departure from the spirit and scope thereof.
In said drawings: J Fig. l is a diagrammatic side elevation of a portion of a dobby loom having the invention applied thereto, the parts being shown in the relative positions assumed thereby when the loom is operating normally.
Fig. 2 is a similar View illustrating the cooperation of the parts to stop the loom.
Referring to the drawing, the usual loom side is shown at 10, the lay at 11,- the shuttle box at 12, a shuttle at 13, and harness mechanism at 14. At 15 shown drop wire mechanism which acts through a shipper rod 160, reversing lever 161 and link 162 upon knockoff devices, generally indicated at 170, to actuate the usual shipper lever 180 to stop the loom when a warp thread breaks, the shipper rod moving rearwardly for this purpose. The shipper lever 180 is illustrative of means for stopping the loom, and the usual clutch and clutch connections are omitted for simplicity of illustration as these parts are well known and require no description. The shuttle box 12 carries the usual binder 19 which is pressed into engagement with the shuttle by a binder finger 20 mounted on the usual protector rod or shaft 21 extending longitudinally of the lay and pivotally mounted in suitable bearings on the latter. Cooperating with and preferably surrounding the protector shaft 21 is the usual spring which acts to hold the binder finger in engagement with the binder and to press the latter against the shuttle. The parts above referred to may all be of any approved construction, and the other usual parts of the loom are omitted or require no description as they are well. known in the art and form no portion of the present invention.
In accordance with the present invention, the protector shaft 21 has fast thereon a forwardly extending arm or dog 23 formed with a hooked end 24 which cooperates with one arm of a reversing lever 26. The shipper rod 160 is moved forwardly to operate the knockoff device 170 which actuates the shipper lever 180 to stop the loom, said shipper rod 160 being connected with the drop wire mechanism 15 through the reversing lever 161 and link 162, as previously mentioned. To permit the dog 23 to move the shipper rod 160 forwardly to stop the loom upon rearward movement of the lay, the hooked end 24 of said dog, when depressed into operative position, engages one arm of the reversing lever 26 pivoted to a bracket 27 secured to the loom side 10 at a convenient point, the opposite arm ofsaid lever engaging a lug or trip 250 on the shipper rod 160.
It will be seen that the dog 23 and the member engaged thereby are so relatively arranged that the reaction of the latter member on the dog has substantially no component tending to press the binder finger and binder against the shuttle, so that no strain tending to injure the latter is imposed there on. Thus the movement of the lever 26, when engaged by the dog 23, has a downward component tending to rotate the shaft 21 in the direction to relieve. the pressure 0f "the binder on the shuttle.
Having thus described my invention, 1 claim:
In aloom, in combination, a shipper lever, a drop Wire mechanism, ashipper rod, a reversing. lever connecting said shipper rod? to saidndrop wire mechanism, a lay, a shuttle box onthe lay, a binder carried by said shuttlebox, a binder finger engaging said blnder, means lncluding a dog depressed by saidbinder finger When a shuttle is in said shuttleibox,ya lug on said shipper rod, a
bracket, a lever pivoted intermediate its ends ment Withsaid lug to stop the loom.
I In. testimony WhereofI aflix my signature.
HONOREDEMERS.
