EBENEZER BARROWS, OF MATTAPOISETT, MASSACHUSETTS.

KITCHEN-RANGE.

Specification of Letters Patent No. 1,694, dated July 18, 1840.

To all whom, it may concern:

Be it known that I, EBENEZER BARROWS, of Mattapoisett, in the county of Plymouth and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain Improvements in the Manner of Constructing Kitchen-Ranges for the Purpose of Cooking; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof.

Figure 1, in the accompanying drawing, is a front elevation of my range, the brick-Work being a part of, or connected with, an ordinary fire-place. Thev main body of this range is divided into three compartments, A, B, and C.

The compartment 0, contains the fire cylinder D, for the reception of the fuel, and the compartments A and B, are ovens which are to be heated entirely by the heat radiating from the cast-iron fire cylinder D. To effect this, there are free openings in the partitions E, E, between the fire-chamber and the ovens, which openings may be wholly, or partially, closed by means of movable shutters, when it is desired to moderate the heat. The outer ends, or sides, of these ovens are, in general, formed by the extension of the brick-work of the jambs, as shown at F, F, the metal ends, one of which is shown at G, being omitted. When this is not done, these outer ends of the two ovens are to be lined withfire-brick, this part being in all cases intended to consist of a bad conductor of heat. As these ovens are to be heated by radiation alone, there are not any fines either under them, or around their sides.

The oven H, at the back of the range, is similar to others so situated, having flues around it through which the heated air from the fire-chamber passes in the usual manner, the draft being regulated by valves, or dampers. There are also two side flues in the brick-work, leading up from the fire, or

boiler, space I, I, over each of the ovens.

seen at K, K. By means of the dampers in these fiues the heat may be directed under cooking utensils placed in the openings of the top plate L, L; the spaces I, I, leading to the side fiues. The top plate over the fire cylinder is removed, for the purpose of showing the parts beneath it; but this, otherwise, forms a continuation of the top plate L, L. In the top plate of the side ovens, I make an opening through into the ovens, situated as at a, providing it with a sliding cover by which it may be closed. This serves the purpose of allowing of the escape of vapor into the fiues, and also allows a passage to the heated air in warm weather, when it is desirable that it should not escape into the apartment. Within the mantel, also, there is an opening for the escape of steam into the middle flue, which may be opened or closed by the handle M. The compartments A, B, and C, are represented as furnished with my quadrant hinge doors, at N, N, N. A roasting oven may be placed before the fire cylinder in the center compartment; and where there are water-works, I place a water heater, for baths, behind the fire cylinder, but these being well known devices need not be represented.

In describing my kitchen range, I have in cluded therein many parts to which I do not make any claim as inventor; all that I claim being The manner of constructing and combining the three compartments constituting the fire-chamber and the side ovens, there being.

a free opening for the radiation of heat from the fire cylinder contained in the former, into said side ovens, the latter being without flues either under or around their sides, and their ends being formed of brick. These form my combinatiomand to them I limit my claim.
