METALLIC HEAD FOR BARRELS.
Application filed March 1, 1927. Serial No. 171,810.
The present invention is directed to improvements in metallic heads for barrels, kegs. or the like.
The priinaryvobject of the invention is to provide a barrel head so constructed that it can be easily and quickly applied to the barrel and lirmly maintained in place thereon in a simple and przn-.cal manner.
r rnother object ot the invention is to proride a barrel head so constructed that should the upper ends of tl stares be out of alincment they will brought into alinement as the head is applied to the barrel.
Another object of the invention is to pro.- vide a barrel head which is practically ince structible under normal conditions and will last indefinitely.
Another object of the invention is to provioe a device of this kind so constructed that the upper ends of the stays need not be beveled or otherwise machined to 2 sure proper lit, thereby materially reducing the cost of the barrel.

It will be observed that the upper plane or" the channel member 7 is above the plane of the plate 5 in order that when the head is in place upon the barrel the plate will enter the upper end thereof for a short distance.
The side flange 8 is cut to provide a plurality of substantially V-shaped ears 9, and resultant spaces 10, the lower ends of the ears being turned up to provide seats 11, the purpose ot which will. later appear.
The head is placed upon the upper end of the barrel and forced downwardly by a block of suitable formation, and should the upper 7 set a wire hoop 12 is placed therearound and forced downwardly until it occupies the seals 11, after which staples 13, or other suitable securing devices are engaged with the hoop at points in the spaces between the ears 9, thereby firmly securing the hoops in place. The plates 5 may be strengthened by providing corrugations 14 which may be oi any desired form.
While I have illustrated the head used in connection with a barrel formed from staves, it will be of course understood that it can be used successfully in connection with barrels or kegs formed from fiber.
Having thus described the invention, I claim: I 4
1. A barre-l head comprising a metal plate bent in spaced relation to its periphery to form an annular shoulder flatthroughout its circumference and extending upwardly at an outward incline and leading to an upstanding circumferentially extending barrel engaging portion of an inverted U-shape in cross section and having inner and outer walls, the outer wall being of greater depth than the inner wall and having slits leading from its lower edge to provide spaced tongues, the free lower ends of the tongues being bent outwardly and upwardly to providehooked ends, and a securing ring for said. head encircling the same about the tongues and engaged by the hooked ends oi the tongues when in place.
2. In combination with a container having a frusto-conical end portion, of a cover haw ing a depending inclined. annular portion adapted to be forced over the irusto-conical end of said container to close the same, said annular inclined portion having a plurality of openings and being provided with an abutment, aring adapted to be wedged over the inclined annular portion of said cover until it engages said abutment to hold said cover in place upon the container, and means extending through the openings in the annular inc-lined portion of the cover for securing said ring to said container.
3. In combination with a container, of a head comprising a plate having a channeled marginal portion inverted U-shape in cross section providing spaced inner and outer upstanding walls inclined 'elativeiy to each other, said outer wall having n plurality of openings and being provided with an abutment, said head adapted to be pressed over the end of said container with the ends of the walls'of the container clamped in the channeled nmi ginal portion of said hEtl-Chfflringadapted to be pressed over the outer Wall of the head into engagement with said ahutmentior holding theveo ver insplac-e upon the container, andmeansextending through the openings in the outer upstanding Wall of-s'ai'd'head'forsecuring-said ring to the container.
