IMPROVEMENT IN STOVES AND FURNACES.

Specification formingl part of Letters Patent No. 169,273, dated October 26, 1875; application filed August 11, 1875.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, PHILiP KLoTz, of Baltimore city, in the county of Baltimore and State of Maryland, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Anti-Olinker Stoves and Furnaces; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings forming part of this specication, in which- Figure 1 represents my improvements applied to a stove. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the samel detached; and Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the old form of fire-pot.

Similar letters of reference in the accompanying drawings denote the same parts.

This invention relates to that class of stoves, furnaces, Sac., in which the tire-pot or fire-wall is suspended between the magazine and the grate, or suspended above the grate, its lower edge being slotted to prevent the adhesion of slag, and to admit the end of a poker for the removal thereof', 'if any should be found to be accumulating on the walls of the fire-pot.

Heretofore such suspended slotted fire-walls have been invariablycast in a single piece of iron, as shown in Fig. 3 5 but, when thus cast, it is heavy and unwieldy, cannot be introduced into or removed from the ordinary furnace or fire-place heater without first removing the front portion or top of such furnace or heater, and, .when it becomes injured on any side, is totally useless. The object of myinvention is to obviate all these inconveniences by adapting such fire-wall to be inserted or removed through the stove windows or doors, and by enabling a portion of it, when burnt out or otherwise injured, to be removed without necessitating the removal of the whole.

' To these ends the invention consists in making such fire-wall in two or more sections, of such size that they can be each passed through the stove windows or doors, and adapting them to be connected firmly together inside of the stove, so as to answer the same purpose as ,the suspended slotted fire-walls heretofore in use. In the drawings, A represents the suspended slotted fire-walls heretofore generally used, and B represents my improvement, in which 'the fire-wall is made in several sections, b b,

adapted to be united, when in the stove, by means of tenons on one, and mortises on the other, or by other equivalent means. These sections bear such relation, in point of size, to the windows or other openings in the sides of the stove, that they can be readily passed through in either direction without removing the front plates of the stove or top, as heretofore.

The result of thisconstruction is that it is no longer necessary to move the stove out of the fire-place in order to take out an old firepot or put in a new one; nor is it necessary to remove the plates of the stove, nor to spend several hours upon the job; but the whole operation can be performed in a few minutes, at a comparatively slight cost, without any difficult labor on the part of the workmen, and without scattering soot about the house.

I claim as my invention- A slotted fire-pot for stoves or furnaces, adapted to be suspended from its upper edge within the stove or furnace, and constructed in segments of such size that they can be passed separately through the stove doors or Windows, said sections. being adapted to be fttedtogether when inside the stove, substantially as described,for the purposes specifled.
