This invention relates to a toy hobby horse and it consists in the novel features hereinafter described and claimed.
An object of the invention is to provide a hobby horse of the character stated upon which the rider may be seated and by raising and lowering his body, will cause the horse to move over a. plane surface and at the same time swing its body so that it Wlll have the appearance of galloping.
A still further object of the invention is to provide in a toy horse of the character stated, simple and e'liicient means for causing the toy to move in a straight forward direction as indicated, and also means for guiding the toy so that it may be caused to travel in a curved path, if desired.

As illustrated in the accompanying drawing, the toy includes a body 1, representing a horse in the act of galloping. The body.
1 is provided at that portion thereof representing the head and mouth of the animal with a handle 2 which may be used by the rider of the toy for maintaining poise upon the toy when the same is in movement as will be hereinafter explained. A saddle 3 is pivoted at one end upon the body of the animal above the front shoulders thereof, and the free end portion of the said saddle is disposed over the intermediate portion of the back of the animal.
A lever 4 is fulcrumed at a point between its ends to the intermediate portion of the body of the animal and approximately transverse] of the spine thereof. The power end 0 the lever 4 projects above the upper side of the back of the animal and is provided with freely journalled rollers 5 which bear upon the under surface of the saddle 3.
A spring or springs 6 are connected at one end with the intermediate portion of the lever 4 and at their other ends with the hind legs of the animal. The said springs 6 are traction springs and serve to hold the lever 4 at a normal position whererby the rollers 5 are projected above the upper side of the back of the animal and the rear end of the saddle 3 is normally held at an elevated position. The lower portion of the lever 4 is forwardly disposed as at 7 and one end of an angular bracket 8 ispivoted to the under side of the said portion 7. A bar 9 is pivoted to the under end of the bracket 8. The point of pivotal connection between the bar 9 and the bracket 8 is at a right angle to the pivot which connects the bracket 8 with the for ward portion 7 of the lever, and consequent-ly, the bar 9 may have universal swingino' movement with relation to the lever. The bar 9 may serve as a foot rest for the rider and b' turnin or twistin the bar y g o bar 9 and carries at its ends suo ortin wheels 11. A ratchet wheel 12 is fixed to the intermediate port-ion of the shaft 10 and a pawl 13 is pivoted upon the bar 9 at its 9 free end engages the teeth of the ratchet wheel 12 at the upper side thereof. The said ratchet wheel and pawl are so arranged and disposed thatthe axle 10 may turn over at its upper side in a forward direction, but the upper portion of the axle cannot turn rearwardly.
A block 14 is carried at the ends of the hind leg of the figure represented by the g body 1 and an axle shaft 15 is journalled upon the block 14. Supporting wheels 16 are carried at the ends of the shaft 15. A ratchet wheel 17 is mounted upon the intermediate portion of the axle 15 and a springpressed pawl 18 is pivoted upon the block 14 and bears upon the upper side of the ratchet wheel 17. The ratchet wheel 17 and the pawl 18 are so arranged and assembled that the shaft 15 is held against turning over rearwardly but the said shaft 15 may turn over in a forward direction.
When the rider is seated upon the saddle 3 and uses the cross bar 9 as a support for his feet the rider may workhis body vertically and thus the seat or saddle will rise and fall and inasmuch as the saddle engages the power end of the lever 4, the said lever will be rocked or swung with relation to the body 1. At the same time, the body 1 is caused to rise and fall as itsforward end, thus giving the body of the toy theappearance of alloping. As the forward portion of the forwardly and are spread away from the wheels 167 hen the body 1 rises, the wheels 11 are held at rest upon the floor surface and the wheels 16 turn over and approach the wheels 11. This causes the body of the toy to have the appearance of moving over a floor surface and of galloping while the body of the rider 'reciprocates vertically with relationthe the path of movement over which the toy travels.
In Figure 6, l have shown a modified form of' my toy horse, showing a body 20 having fore legs 21 attached thereto. The rear legs 22 are attached to the rear block. This form of my invention is formed with a heavier animalbody and shows that the four legs may be formed on my device instead ofthe formshown in Figuresl and 2,
if so desired.
From the foregoing description of the construction and operation of this improved device, it will be seen that a simple, inexpensive and efficient means is provided for carrying out the=objects of the invention.
While I have particularly described the elements best adapted to perform the functionsset forth, it is obviousthat various changes in form, proportion and in the minor details of construction may be re-v sorted to, without departing from thespirit or sacrificing any of the principles of the invention.
Having described the invention, what is claimed is:
1; A toy comprising a body simulating that of an animal, a saddle pivoted upon the body, a lever fulcrumed upon the bodyand having one end frictionally engaging the saddle, an axle pivotally connected with the lower end of the lever, wheels carried by said axle, a ratchet wheel mounted upon the axle, a pawl pivotally supported with relation to the lever and engaging said ratchet wheel, an axle journalledat the rear portion of the body, wheels carriedby the last mentioned axle, a ratchet wheel carried by the last mcntioned axle and apawl pivotally the working end of the lever, supporting wheels carried by said axle, a ratchet wheel:
mounted upon the axle, a pawl pivotally mounted with relation to the leverand em gaging said ratchet wheel; an axle journalled at the rear end of the body, supporting wheels carried by the-lastmentioned axle,
