Original application filed March 10, 1924, Serial-No. (598,099.I Divided and this application filed January 23` 1926 This invention relates to lasting machines, and kmore particularly vto shoe-end-lasting mechanism, this application being a division ot `my co-pending application' for Letters `Patent for improvements` in the manufacture et shoes, Serial No. G98,G99, filed on March 10, 1924. The invention is hereinillustrated in its application to the lasting -of the toe ends of shoes, but it will be recognized that ity is not thus limited in its applicability.
An important object of' the present inventionis to provide improvements .in mechanism for operating end-lasting wipers, i. ef, for moving the wipers bodily lengthwise of a shoe and for swinging them toward or from cach other laterally of the shoe. `The construction herein shown comprises a simple and convenient arrangement of wiper-operating mechanism, vincluding a hand lever and separate connections between the lever and the wipers for imparting to the wipers the `different respective movements. Among other advantages, this facilitates the yprovision ot means foradjusting the wipersrtoward or from each other to adapt them to operate upon shoes of different widths, and the invention further provides novell means for thus adjusting the wipers comprising, as
herein illustrated, mechanism whereby one of the above-mentioned wiper-operating connections may be moved'independently oit the other to adjust the wipers for different widths. i o
A further feature ot the invention consists in novel means for effecting a relative variation between the extent of the bodily advancing movement of the wipers lengthwise of the shoe, and the extent of their closing or swinging movement laterally of the shoe, to adapt them to operate with the best results upon shoes of different shapes. The plunger et() is operated by a hand lever l54 pivoted at 56`on the head 10, the lever being connected by a link 58to a nut 60 (Fig. 2) which is threaded on a sleeve 62 mounted on the plunger 40 between the head 50 and a iied washer 64. The threaded sleeve 62 may thusbef utilized to adjust `the plunger l0 to swing the wipers about their center without advancing them, `.and thereby to determine their `proper starting position, the sleeve being held normally from turning by means of a friction m'ember`66 l).
I The handlever 54 is utilized to advance the wwipers lengthwise of the'shoe as well as to oted at 74 on the head l0 and is connected in turn to the wiper-advancing sleeve 26. rlhe connections between the lever 72 and the sleeve 26 comprise a block T6 secured to the sleeve 26 and guided in a slot i 8 in the head l0, this blocl; having thereon a pin 80 which carries a bearing block 82 slidably mounted in a'slot in the end of the lever 72. lt will be evident that as the hand lever 5d is operated to advance the plunger l0 and thus to impartswinging movements to the wipers to close them laterally ot the toe, it also serves through the connections described to impart to the sleeve 26 wiper-advancing movement the extent of which bears a predetermined relation to the extent ot the closing movement of the wipers.
It is usually desired, particularly on welt work, to wipe the upper inwardly for thel same distance from the edge ot the shoe bottom at the sides of the toe as at the end of the toe. To yaccomplish this result in the best manner a dii'iierent extent of angular swinging movement of the wipers, for the same extent of bodily advancing movement, is required tor toes of materially different shapes, for example, for pointed toes as compared with blunt toes. It is accordingly desirable Yto vary relativelyv the rates ot the advancing and closingl movements .of the wipers, and the machine herein shown is provided with means whereby such a variation maybe conveniently effected. To this end, there is provided means for adjusting thelinh 68 lengthwise of the lever 72 to change the etifective length of this lever. lt will be seen by reference to ,Figa 'l that thelink 68 is connected by a pivot pin 88 to a blocl 84e slidingly mounted in a curved slot 86 in the lever (2. 0n the head of the pin 83 is a slide 87 (Fig 8) Vmounted in a guideway extending transversely oit a block 88 which is mounted on an adjusting screw fOswivelled in bearing members 92 on the lever 72. A lasting machine as in claim 21 and wherein the operating member has actuating connections to the carriage and other connections to the wiper plates, and means for initially adjusting one of such connections to set the plates toward or from each other according to the shape or size of the shoe.
