Application filed November 16, 1327.- Sc'rial No. 233,715.
This invention relates to an attachment for beds in hospitals andthe like, the general object of the invention being to provide a' drawer carrying cabinet, with means for de: tachably connecting it with the side rails of a bed in such a manner that the cabinet is arranged below the bed and some of the drawers of which are accessible fromeach side of the bed.
A further object of the invention is to so form the connecting means that the cabinet can be moved longitudinally of the bed.
A still further object of the invention is to provide a collapsible table at the front of the cabinet which, when not in use, can be arranged between the cabinet and the bed and when in use, can be extended over the bed in various, positions.
This invention also consists in certain other features of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts, to be hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and specifically pointed out in the appended claim.
In describing my invention in detail, reference will be had 'to the accompanying drawings wherein like characters denote like or corresponding parts throughout the several views, and in which Figure l is a side view of a hospital bed, showing the invention thereon.
Figure 2 is a plan view of the device, showing the same attached to the rails of the bed.
Figure 3 is a section on line 33 of Fig ure 1. I
Figure 4: is a section on line -i of Figure 2.
Figure 5 is a view of one corner of the device, showing the means for attaching it to a bed rail and also 'showingthe table collapsed and placed under the'bed.
Figure. 6 is a view showing how the table is attached to its standard.
Figure 7 is a partial plan view showing one of the hinged connecting means swung outwardly so that the device can be placed between the rails of a bed.
Figure 8 is a view looking toward the. small end of the device.
Figure 9 is an elevation showing the hinged connection in raised position and ready to be swung downwardly to connect the device with the rail of the, bed. v
Figure 10 isa sectionon line"1010 of Figure 6.
in these views, which has one end made smaller than its other end, as shown at 1 and a U-shaped 1 indicatesthecabinet 4' member 2 is fastened to each end of the cabinet with its bight spaced above the top of the cabinet and at each end of thebight of each ti-shaped member is pivoted a bar 3 so that the barcan be swung from a position at rightangles to the U-shaped member,
as shown in Figure 5, to a position where it will extend axially of the U-shaped member, as shown in Figure 7.
A latch bar 4 is hingedly connected with the outer end of the bar 3, as shown at 5, i
and this latch bar has its free end slotted, as at 6, to fit over a set screw 7 carried by the frontof the casing and carrying a thumb nut 8. This arrangement of parts permits the cabinet'to be placed under the side rails t. of a bed, with the U-shaped members parallel with the inner faces of the rails and then by swinging the bars3 outwardly, they will rest upon the side rails. 'Thenthe fastened to the ends of the cabinet by the latch bars i are. swung downwardly and are thumb nuts 8. Thus the cabinet is slidably' supported on the side rails of the bed, as will be seen and may be removed from the bed at any time.
The large endof the cabinet carries a sleeve 9 in which fits a part of the telescopic stem 10 of a table 11. The upper section of the stem is bent at rightangles and the table 11 is fastened to this bent portion by the clamps 12, When not in'use, the table will occupy a position between the top of the cabinet and the bottom of the bed, but by loosening the set screw 13 which fastens the stem in'the socket or sleeve 9, the table can be swung outwardly and then it can be ele-' vated in the-usual manner to a position above the bed, as shown in Figure 1. By
clamping the table to the bent part of the stem, the table can be adjusted to any desired angle, as shown in Figure 1.
I show the large end of the cabinet as formed with two drawers 14; and the small end of the cabinet provided with a single drawer 15,- but it will, of course, be undersonaleflects of the patient close at hand, and
stood that other arrangements of drawers may be providedv and that these drawers could be provided with partitions for dividing them into various kinds of compartments. From the foregoing it will be seen that I have provided a cabinet which is arranged under the bed so that itutilizes waste space and is so supported as to not interfere with the cleaning under'the bed and in fixingvthe bed. The device isuse-ful for keeping persome of the drawers may be used for holding a bed pan, urinal and the like. a
It is thought from the foregoing description that the'advantages and novel features of my invention will be readily apparent.
I desire it to be understood that I may make changes in the construction and in the above the top of the cabinet, a bar plvoted to each end of each bight, a latch bar hinged to the outer end of the first mentioned bar and keepers at the ends of the cabinet for engaging portions of the latch bars to hold the parts over the side rails of the bed.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature.
MINNIEEVA HENDRICKS.
