IMPROVEMENT IN CORN-MARKERS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 169,177, dated October 26,1875, application filed August 21, 1875.

To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, THOMAS B. KIRKWOOD, of Bentonville, in the county of Fayette and State of Indiana, have invented a new and Improved Corn-Marker, of which the following is a specification:

In the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 represents a vertical longitudinal section on the line 0 c, Fig. 2, of my improved cornmarker, and Fig. 2 a top view of the same.

Similar letters of reference indicate correspondin g parts.

The invention will first be described in connection with drawing, and then pointed out in the claim.

In the drawing, A represents the cutter carrying main board, that is connected by hinged arms or beams B with the axle O of a cultivator or walking corn-plow. The cutterboard A swings by arms B on the axle O, and may be raised or lowered and supported in raised position by rings a and hook-arms!) of the tongue of the cultivator for turning around and going to and from the field. The board A carries at its under side the cutters D, of which three or more may be arranged according to the number of furrows to be made. The shovels D are centrally slotted and seated over the cutter, being riveted at the upper part to the upward-bent cutter ends. The cutter prevents the point of the shovels from catching on roots or stones in marking 011' the furrows. The drivers seat is placed on the top of a central upright, E, attached by strong braces to the main board A, the guide-marking pole F being pivoted to the upright E,

and capable to he swung to either side of the main board A without necessitating the 'detaching of the pole when the guide-marking board is to be used at the opposite side. Double-guide braces G are applied to each end of the main board to keep the guidemarking pole in place. A cutter-board, F, with symmetrically-arranged cutters F, is fastened to the end of the guide-marker, at either side of the furrower, in hard or mellow ground.. The guide-marking board is, on the turning of the furrower, swung with great facility to the opposite side, and forms thus a very convenient and quickly-adjusted guidemarking device. The furrower may also be used without the walking-plow, by being detached from the axleconnecting arms or beams, to be then attached to a tongue, forming thus a neat and handy furrowing and guide-markin g implement.

Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. The branched cutters D, turned up, as shown, to form standards, in combination with slotted shovels D and board A, as and for the purpose set forth.

2. The combination, with pivoted frame A B, having cutters D, of the upright E, the pivoted pole F, the guide-braces G, and the boards F, having cutters F, as and for the purpose specified.
