WALTER J. GORM A N, OF JERSEY CITY, NEW JERSEY.
:Buamr. vaun- Application filed March 19, 1927. Serial No. 178,664.
ing to provide means .for utilizing a vault construction wherein the mounting of one vault upon the other, the top of a lowermost vault may constitute the bottom of the next adjacent vault, thereby effecting a saving in material; a further object being to provide means for reinforcing the walls of the vault and providing a vent tube therein for the discharge of the gases; a still further object being to provide simple and effective means for coupling and sealing the doors of the vaults; and with these and other objects in view, the invention consists in a vault of the class and for the purposespecified, which is simple in construction, efficient in use, and which is constructed as hereinafter described and claimed.
The invention is fully disclosed in the following specification, of which the accom panying drawing forms a part, in which'the separate parts of my improvement are designated by suitablereference characters in each of the views, and in which:
Fig. 1 is a side and sectional view of one form of vault which I employ.
. F ig. 2 is a face view of the vault shown in Fig. 1, on a reduced scale and with part of the construction broken away.
Fig. 3 is a sectional, detail view of a art of the construction shown'in- Fig. 1 o the drawing.
Fig. f is a perspective and sectional view of a modified form of construction which I employ; and,
Fig. 5 is a perspective view of an open end vault made according to my invention? In Figs. 1 and 2 of the drawing, I have shown a vault composed of cement, concrete or" other material. In the construction shown, the vault comprises a back wall 10, top wall 11, bottom wall 12 and end walls 13.. The front side of the vault is open and provided with a groove 14 on the inner face of the walls of the vault at the open side. A strip 15 of metal is imbedded in the walls of the vault adjacent the groove 14, and has at intervals, inwardly pressed portions 16 whereby a sealing compound 17 will operate 31 to the desired height.
to seal the door 18 employed for closing the open end of the vault. ,The strips 15 also serve .to give-strength to the open side of the vault.
. The vault is reinforced by a body of openwork material 19 imbedded in the back, top,
bottom and end walls. If desired, this'material may be anchored to the strip 15 as well as to bolts 20 employed for mounting lugs 21 at the open side 'of the vault for engaging the door 18 to hold the same in closed position, and further to permit of the removal of the door at will.
I also preferably imbed in the back wall 10 of the vault, a trap 22 which opens into the chamber 23 of the vault and out through said back wall to allow for the escapement Y of gases. I also imbed in the bottom wall 12 of the vault, adjacent'the ends thereof, two strips 24 having anti-friction rollers 25 whereby the casket 26 indicated in dot and dashlines, Figs. 1 and 2, may be easily rolled into the chamber 23 of the vault. The door 18 is provided with a number of ringlike handles 27 anchored to the concrete of the door or thereinforcing material 28 employed in the door construction.
In the use ofthe vault; shown in Figs. 1 and 2 of the drawing, and especially in stacking the same, the lowermost vault is mounted upon back and end strips 29 to space the same from-a floor or other support, and the vault placed upon the lowermost vault is spaced therefrom by similar back and end'strips 30, and thus the next vault is placed on stri s A chamber 32 is preferably arranged at the backs of the vaults to'allow for the escape of the gases. which may be discharged from the traps 22.
In Fig. 4 of the drawin I have shown a slight modification wherein the lowermost vault 33 of a stack of vaults is identical with thewault shown in Figs. 1 and 2, with the exception that the top of the back and side portions of the vault,. is provided with sockets 34 to receive pins 35 on the next adjacent vault 36. The vault 36' differs from the vault 33 or the vaults shown in Figs. 1 and 2, simply in that thebottom wall 12 is not employed. The bottbm of the vault 36 is formed by the top wall 11 of thevault 33,
and the vault 33 is further modified in that strips 37 similar to the strips 24 are mounted upon the outer face of the top wall 11, and in like manner, similar strips 37 are-mounted .upon' the outer faces of the top wall of the 8. foregoing, the structure the drawing,
the-vault 36, and if this vault be most vault employed, the strips the u 37, W1 Fit;
eliminated- Otherwise, the vault would be' identical with the vault36. Aside from the vaultshown in Fig. 4 of the drawing will he the same as that shown in 1 and 2 of except further that the lower grooves of the vaults 36 and 38 are omitted, and the lugs 21' the covers 18" of the vaults 33-36 and see-3a.,
In Fig. of thedrawing, I have shown another modification, wherein'the vault 89 is open at one end only, and said open end is grooved as. seen at 40 to correspond with the grooves 14 to receive a door 41' held in place by lugs 42 similar to the lugs 21.; In .this form of construction,
1 roller strip 43 is mount d centrally and longitudinall of the inner 5 may be found practical for use in certain types of mausoleums, and where the exposed end stacking of the vaults is'desirable.
. may be stacked one upon another and side located at theback wall as in the shown certain details of construction Suitable carry'in' my invention into efiect, and have referre to a specific'use of my improved vaults, that I am not necessarily linnted'to the construction herein shown and described,
. what I Y .prisingback, top and end walls integrally the to and a oor to close the front.
and various changes therein and modification's thereofma be made within the scope of the appends claims without departing frorn the spirit of my inventionor sacrificing its advantages. fully described my invention,v
