Description
NW0 13 1928. I 1,691,526 A. F. MCDONNELL CLOSURE FOR CONTAINERS Filed April 17, 1928 37/24 WMW ATTORNEY] Patented Nov. 13,, 1928.
UNITED STATES 1,691,526 PATENT OFFICE.
ANTHONY FRANCIS .MCDONNELL, OF DUNMORE, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR OF ONE- THIRD TO WILLIAM ALOYSIUS QUINN, OF SCRANTON, PENNSYLVANIA.
CLOSURE FOR Application filed April 17.
My invention relates more particularly to that class of closures for-bottles, jars, and other rigid containers in which the bottle neck, for example, is enlarged bya peripher- 1 :11 head or otherwise around the mouth of the bottle, and the cap, for example, that known as the Crown cap, which is provided with a cork or other'lining in its crown to seal the mouth of the bottle, is crimped or com- H pressed toform a contracted rim bound tightly around the neck of the bottle, and} secured against displacement thereon by the enlargement around the mouth of the bottle.
The Crown cap has heretofore generally been removed when desired by a special tool for the purpose which often distorts the cap in removal, so that it cannot be used again even for temporarily closing the container, as when only part of the contents is .0 to be used at a timef I The primary object of my invention is to provide a neck for bottles, jars and similar containers so formed that the cap, when crimped or compressed thereon,-as by means of the ordinary crimping machines in com-- mon use, will be securely held in place against leakage and displacement, and yet can be easily removed by hand without the use of any tool, and after removal can be easily replaced on the neck for temporarily closing the container when only part of its contents have been used. I
- To this and other ends, my invention consists broadly of a container, for example, a
bottle, having a neck formed with periphally and upwardly inclined beads or-shoulders to engage inward prtgections, or some of the corrugations, if a rown cap, on the inside of the rim thereof and lift the cap off the neck as the cap is turned, and with-upwardly and outwardly inclined parts, by which the rim of the cap, when crimped or con-, tracted around the neck, islocked in lace, and which, when the cap is turned by and, will. act to expand the rim and ease the lif,t-
in of the cap ofl" the neck. 1
. y invention also consists more specifical- 1y, informing the peripherally and up wardly inclined shoulders on the upper sides of beads raised around the neck of the bottle, the underside's of which, when the several beads overlap, serve with the outwardly inclined parts of the neck, to engage the inward cap projections and lock the cap. in place.
CONTAINERS.
1928. Serial No. 370,749. I
separate application for patent filed by me April 17, 1928, Serial No. 270,750.
The present application is specifically for another specific form of my broad invention described but not claimed in my said other application, and consists in forming the peripherally and upwardly inclined cap-lifting shoulders on the neck in pairs converging downwardly and the parts of-the neck between the shoulders flarin or inclined upwardly and outwardly. The downwardly converging shoulders will engage the inward projections of the cap, crimped or contracted thereon, when turned in either direction and lift the cap off the neck, and the upwardly and outwardly inclined parts of the neck between the shoulders will serve :to lock the cap in place when crimped or In order that this specific form of my in- I vention may be fully understood, I shall first describe in detail the mode'in' which I at present prefer tocarry the invention intopractice, and then particularly point out the invention in the claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings forming part of this application in which like parts are designated by the same numbers in all the figures.
' Figure 1 is a sectional side view of a bottle neck with Crown cap embodying my invention.
Figure 2 is a cross-sectional view of the same on the line 22, Figure 1.
Figure 3 is a side view of the said bottle neck.
In the drawings, 5 designatesv the Crown cap here shown to illustrate one use of my invention, 6 the corrugated rim thereof which is contracted, usually by crimping, around the neck of the bottle, and 7 the usual internal corrugations on the inside of the rim.
8 designates the bottle neck, which I form with peripherally and upwardly inclined shoulders 9, arranged in pairs converging downwardly from the mouth 10 of the bottle,
tracted thereon, the cap will be locked securely on the neck, and when the cap is turned by hand in either direction, and lifted off the neck by the shoulders 9, the rim of the cap will be evenly and gradually spread by the upwardly and outwardly inclined parts-11, the removal of the cap thus facilitated, and the destructive distortion thereof caused by the ordinary tool, prevented. As a result the cap being flexible, can be easily slipped over the cap-expanding and securing parts 11 and replaced temporarily to cover the remaining contents of the bottle when only a part thereof has been used.
I prefer to make the depth of the converging cap-lifting shoulders 9 greater at the bottom where the initial and greatest resistance to removal of the cap is met and slightly diminishing to the top to make a better finish at the mouth of the bottle. I
I also may slightly depress transversely the outer parts 12 of the neck between the pairs of shoulders at the bottom, the better to accommodate the part of the rim contracted against the same.
It is evident that this improved form of container neck may be used with other caps than the Crown cap, which have a rim adapted to be contracted below the mouth of the bottle and interior projections on the rim which will enter between and engage the downwardly converging shoulders 9.
His also evident that other changes may be made in the practice of my invention without departing from the boundaries thereof as defined by the following claims.
I claim as my invention:
1. A bottle or other container having its neckformed with shoulders inclined peripherally and upwardly toward the mouth and arranged in pairs converging downwardly so as to be engaged by intervening inward projections on the rim of the cap and lift the cap when turned in either direction, and with parts intervening the shoulders inclined outwardly and upwardly toward the mouth to engage and lock the caprim contracted around the. neck and to expand the rim when the cap is lifted by the inclined shoulders.
2. A bottle or other container in accord with claim 1, in which the converging shoulders decrease in depth toward'the mouth.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature.
ANTHONY FRANCIS MODONNELL.
