rlhis invention relates to a garment pressing and ironing machine adapted to be used by tailors, clothiers and the like or steaming, pressing and drying garments which are brought to the machine in a dry conditioner may be used tor laundering articles which are brought to the machine in a more or less dampened condition.
These operations are usually performed by Separate machines which for economical reasons would be prohibitive in the average households and in many public institutions where more or less' of both kinds of work are required. y
The main object, therefore, is to provide a machine capable of -functioning for both purposes so that it may be used in households and public institutions where various kinds of drying, cleaning, pressing and light laundr work may be quickly and economically per 'ormed One of the specificobjects. is to provide separately movable pressing elements adapted to cooperate with Opposite surfaces of a relatively stationary pressing element in such manner that the steaming and pressing of dry garments may be effected between one of the movable elements'and correspond.- ing face of the stationary element while damp'garments or articles may be simultaneously pressed and ironed between the other movable pressing element and corresponding surface of the stationary element.

A pedal operated detent 16- ispivoted at l7 to the base of the frame -lt-l for engaging ashoulder *18- on the intermediate portion of the front arm of the lever -llfor holding the toggle in its straightened position and thereby holding the press i head in its pressing position.
The detent 16- is provided with a pedal -l9- by which it may be depressed against the action of an expansion springv -20- for tripping the detent from .engagement with the lug or shoulder 18- and thereby releasing the toggle and allowing the press head to be opened orvswung upwardly and rearwardly vunder the action of the weight 10- and retracting spring -14-.
The rear end of the detent -16 is prothe underside of the adj acentportion of the lever 11; when the detent is tripped for flexing the toggle at the joint '-125- and thus permitting the free actionof the spring -14- and counter weight -10- in opening or raising the press head 2-.
The forward movement of the upper arm of the lever-llis limited by a buffer stop -22- on the frame -A-- so as to prevent the movement of the toggle joint 12-` beyond a straight line between the pivot .-13- and the pivotal connection as 9'- between the toggle link -12- and lever -9-.
The upright bracket -4 is offset` laterally mainly to one side of the main upright portion of the frame -A- as shown in Figure 2 While the buck -1 is supported near one end upon the upper portion of the bracket -fl so that the major portion of 4the length of the buck may extend laterally beyond the bracket to permit the goods 'tensi've with the length and width of the upper surface of the buck 5 and is also provided with a steam chamber f2- for receiving steam through a branch supply pipe -23- which is connected to the main supply pipe 2athrough the medium of a turning joint -25- co-axial with the axis of movement of the lever -9-.
The bottom of the ress head -2 forming the pressing surfce may be perforated at -26- to allow the steam to pass therethrough to the surface of the garment during the steaming or pressing operation, the steaming serving to dampen Ithe garment and to render it more pliable and susceptible to shaping under pressure. lny suitable means such as a valve 27 may be provided in the branch pipe 23- for controlling the passage of steam to the chamber -2v-, said valve being adapted to be opened and closed at will by means of a link -28 and handle -29-, the latter being preferably arranged in proximity to the handle as -.30- on the front end of the lever S9- for convenience of operation.
The feed roller or drum 3- is adapted to cooperate with the lower pressing face '-G- of the buck -land to rotate about lits axis for feeding the articles against the surface' ,6- for ironing purposes, said feed roll being provided with a peripheral pad '#3'* which is more or less resilient and facilitates the picking up` and feeding of the `articles from the table against the ironing surface without exposing the hands to dangerous contact with the heated iron or feed roll.

ward and from the ironing surface 6 of the buck -1- to cooperate therewith for pressing purposes if desired and when released is free to drop by -it-s own weight away .from the heated surface to prevent overheating of the padded surface.
The feed roller 3- also comprises a vtubular or cylindrical member -3- upon which the pad -3- is mounted and which is provided with internal transverse partitions `31 and -31 secured thereto in axially spaced relation and journaled upon an inner sleeve or bushing -32- which is tightly secured at one end in a vertically swinging bracket -4- on'the bracket 4- while its other end extends into the adjacent end of the feed roller for receiving and sup orting the partitions -3land 31'- as s own in Figure 2.

The roller 5lon the extension 5eis located directly over the cam section the cam is' rocked about the axis of of the lever l--4i7-- from the dotted position to the full position shown in Figure l the high oint -52 of the cam section will engage the roller '--54- and thereby elevate the feed roller to its pressing position while on the other hand, after the lever -47- is depressed to the dotted posit-ion shown in Figure l, the. feed roller will drop by its own weight until limited by the eligagement of the roller 5dwith the lower point' 53- of the cam section.
In order to permit this vertical swinging movement of the bracket -4- and feed roller carried thereby, said bracket is pivoted at 5G- to the bracket -llof the main supporting frame as shown more clearly in Figure 3 and by dotted lines in Figure 2, said pivots being located as closely as possible to the gear S4- on the shaft #33 so as to prevent disengagement of the gears 34.- during the swinging movement of the feed roller to and from the underside of the buck -1--2 l The' object of this movement of the feed roller awayjfrom the underside of the buck is to prevent overheating `or burning of the pad of the feed rollerY when not in use.
Suitable means is provided for preventin the shifting of the clutch from its neutra position and thereby preventing the rotation ofthe feed roller when the latter is dropped away from the buck and for this purpose the bracket -'-51' is provided at its front end with a forkedextension 58- into which the adjacent portion of the lever -l7- is adapted to drop when the'lever and cam section 'are rocked to the position shown by dottedlines to allow the leed roller to falll away from the buck in which case the lever e7-4 will be held by the opposite arms of the forked extension +58* against lateral movement thereby preventing the shifting of the slide #ddby reason of the tact its forked end -etV- will also be in engage ment with the lever e7- as shown in Figure l.
The shaft Q38- is preferably 'driven by an electric ymotor ogn-,mounted on the frame -A- of the' machine and having its armature shaft provided with a worin -60-- meshing with a worm gear 6lon the shaft -38- for imparting rotary motion to said shaft and to the clutch sec tion ---39-. f 'The toggle link-l2-d is adjustable to effect a corresponding adjustment of `the head 9frelatively to the buck -Y5 par ticularly when pressing articles of varying thicknesses.
'lhe machine is also provided with a work table *6% and a feeding table 63", the work table being arranged in a horizontal planebelow the feed roller -3 for temporarily sup orting the work thereon while the feed ta le -68- is arranged directly in icoy articles may be similarly steamed, pressed `front of and in a horizontal plane just below the meeting faces'of the pressing elements 1- and -3- to facilitate the feeding of the articles by hand to the padded sur- `face of the roller -3- which, by reason of the dampened condition of the articles,
causes them to be fed across and against the ironing surface -6-.
If a garment in a dry state is to be pressed the detent -16- is first tripped to allow the press head -2- to be elevated away from the buck after which the garment may` and dried between the pressing elements When pressing or ironing previously dampened articles, the lever 47+ is raised by hand from the position shown by dotted lines to the position shown by full lines in Figure l thereby causing the c am 4Q- to raise the roller #-3-` into pressing contact with the ironing surface -6- at which time the intermediate portion of the lever will be brought into 4registration withthe wider upper` end of the slot in the forked arm -f thus permitting the lateral operation of the lever -47- to throw the clutch seci tion-39- into engagementl with one or the other of the clutch gears --3I, Figure 2, thereby effecting the rotation of the roller -3- through the medium of the upright shaft -35- and gears -34-, it being understood vthat the shifting of the clutch in one direction will cause the forward feeding of the articles across and against the Vironing surface -6- while its movement in the opposite direction will reverse the direction of rotation of the feed roller so that by proper manipulation of the Ilever -47- the article may be fed back ind forth across the ironing surface as marry times as may lbe desired.'
What I claim is:
l. ln a pressing machine of the character described, a pressing element having a pressing surface., l,a feed roller rotatable in pressing co-action with said surface and having -an independent movement toward and from said surface, means including a clutch for rotating the feed roller, means including a hand lever for shifting the clutch, and means actuated by the hand lever. for movi the feed roller into pressing co-action wit the pressingl element.
ln a pressing machine of the character described, a pressing element having an ironing surface, a feed roller cooperating with and rotatable relatively to the ironing surface, said feed roller having an independent movement toward and from the ironing surface, means including a clutch for rotating the feed roller, means including a hand lever movable in one direction for shifting the clutch from a neutral position into its engaging position and having an independent movement, and means actuated by the independent movement of the lever for movifng the feed roller toward the ironing surace.
3. In a pressing machine of the character described, a pressmg element having an ironing surface, a feed roller cooperating with and rotatable relatively to the ironing surface, said feed roller having an independent movement toward 'and from the ironing surface, means including a clutch for rotating the feed roller, means including a hand lever movable in one direction for shifting the clutch from a neutral position into its engaging position and having an independent movement, means actuated by the independent movement of the lever for moving'the feed roller toward the ironing surface, andv means for reventing the clutch shifting movement ci? the lever when the feed roller is moved away surface.v
4:. The combination with l a stationary pressing element, vhaving a heated ironing shoe on lits underside, a padded feed roller below the ironing shoe for feeding the articles to be ironed thereagainst, means for rotatingthe feed roller including a drive shaft having its axis intersecting the axis of the feed roller and supporting means for the feed roller movable about the point of intersection of said axes.
5. The combination with a stationary pressing element, having a heated ironing from the ironing shoe on its underside, a padded feed roller below the ironing shoe for feeding the articles to be ironed thereagainst, means for rotating the feed roller, means for pivotally supporting the feed'roller beyond one end thereof to permit it to swing toward and from the ironing shoe, and means for moving the ironing shoe about the axis of its pivotal supporting means.
6. The combination with a stationary vpressing element, having a heated ironing shoe on its underside, a padded feed roller below the ironing'shoe for feedinr the articles to be' ironed thereagainst, a Ashaft oper- Aatively connected to the feed roller and extendin beyond one endthereof co-axial therewith, a driving shaft having its axisl intersecting the axis of the first-named shaft,
means for supporting the feed roller to' move about the point of intersection of the axes of said shafts, means for transmitting rotary motion from the driving shaft to the first-named shaft for rotating the feed roller,

and means for movin the feed roller about said point of intersection of the axe's of said shafts toward and from the ironing shoe.
7. In a pressing 'and ironing machine of the character described, a stationary pressing elemen-t having an ironing surface on its underside, a feed roller cooperating with said ironing surface, lmeans for pivotally supporting the feed roller at one end and in the axis thereof to swing toward and from thel ironing surface, means for moving said feed roller about the axis of its ivotal support and means for rotating the fried roller.
8. In a pressing and ironing machine of the character described, a main supportin frame, a pressin element mounted on sai frame and provided with an ironing surface on its undeside, a rotary feed roller for feeding the articles against said ironing surface, a support for said feed roller pivoted to the frame beyond one end of the feed 'roller to permit 4the feed roller to swing toward and from the ironing surface, said support having an extension underlying the feed roller, means operatively connected to said extension for rocking the support and feed roller carried thereby about the axis of its pivot, and means for rotating the feed roller. y
