Referring to the'drawings, my improved compressor comprises a low pressure cylinder l5, the outer end of which is flared outwardly 'as shown at 6 and reinforced by a suitable 7 thel lower side of which is provided a pedestal or foot 8 for supporting the outer end of the cylinder. The inner end' of the cylinder is 'provided with a closure 9 taken on which has a transversely extending bore formed therein, the inner end 10 of said bore being larger in diameter than the cuter end 11, thereby forming a shoulder 12 which acts as a valve seat for the disc-shaped check valve 13 which is yieldingly held in its closed position by means of a suitable compression spring 14 located in the enlarged portion 10 of the bore which is closed by a suitable threaded plug 15. The closure 9 is provided with an opening 16 for establishing communication between the low pressure cylinder 5 and the smaller portion 11 of the transverse bore which forms a high pressure cylinder.-
The closure 9 is provided .with two concentric annular ribs 17 and 18, to the first of which is secured the inner end of the low pressure cylinder 5. The second annular rib 18 acts as a support for a screen 20 which prevents the passage of dirt through the opening 16 into 'the high pressure cylinder. An internally threaded boss 21 extends outwardly from the closure 9 in the same direction as the ribs 17 and 18 and is adapted. to receive the inner threaded end of the guide rod 22, the inner end of which is provided with a collar 23, the function of which will later be referred to. The outer end of the guide rod 22 is provided with a transversely extending handle 24, by means of which it can be rotated. l A follower 25, which can be made of wood or any other suitable material, is slidably mounted upon the guide rod 22, and its diameter is preferably such that its periphery will be spaced slightly from the inner wall of the cylinder 5.
A plunger 26 is slidablv mounted in the high pressure cylinder'formed by the bore 11. For 'reciprocating this plunger I prof vide the closure 9'with an outwardlyextending bracket 27 upon which is pivotally mounted a link 28, the -upper end of which is bifurcated and carries the pivot pin 29, upon which is pivotally/mounted one end of the lever 30. The outer end of the plunger 26 is provided with a cap 31 having two bifurcations 32, only one of which is shown, which extend upwardly on opposite sides of the lever 30 andare secured thereto by means of a pivot pin 33 which is located intermediate the ends of the lever 30. The free end of the lever is provided with a handle 34 and the other end of the lever is provided with a projection or stop 35 which is adapted to contact with the face 28 of the link 28 so as te `l1m1t the upper movement of the handle 34 relatively to the low pressure cylinder 5. In this manner the handle 34 may be used for carrying the compressor about.
The closure 9 is provided with a pair of spaced feet 27, only one of which is shown, for supporting the end of the cylinder 5 to which the closure 9 is attached.
The upper end of the valve 13 is reduced in area to provide a clearance space for the passage of lubricant and to prevent dirt or other foreign matter from interfering with the proper seating of the valve. The valve is also flattened on a plurality of its sides, as shown at 36, to provide passageways for the lubricant to flow past the valve.
The valve chamber formed b the enlarged portion 10 of the bore is provi ed with a discharge nipple 37 which ends in one element 38 of a swivel connector. The other element 39 of this connector has secured thereto a flexible conduit 40 which ends in a coupling member 41 constructed in a well-known manner for making a sealed connection with a fitting or nipple 42, also of well-known construction, secured to a bearing 43. i
In operating my improvedcompressor the rod 22 is unscrewed from the boss 21 and withdrawn from the low pressure cylinder. The collar 23 on the inner end of the rod causes the follower 25 to be withdrawn with the rod. The low pressure cylinder is then filled with lubricant andthe rod and follower areinserted into the open end of the low pressure cylinder. This operation is facilitated by the outwardly flaring portion 6 of the-outer end of the low pressure cylinder. The rod is forced inwardly and engaged with the boss 21 leaving the follower 25 in the outer `end of the cylinder. After the coupling member 41 has been connected with the fitting 42 which is to receive lubricant, the operator grasps the handle 34 and moves it upwardly,
thereby creating a vacuum ,fin the portion of the bore below the plunger 26.. When the lower end ofthe plunger uncovers the o pening 16, atmospheric pressure causes the' follower 25 to move inwardly and fill the portion of the bore 11 below the plunger 26 with lubricant. The operator thereupon depresses the handle 34, moving the plunger 26 downwardly. The length of the plunger 26 1s such that when it is in its eXtreme inner position, its inner end can contact with and open the valve 13. It will, of course, be seen that if there is lubricant between the inner end of the plunger and the valve 13, dwnward movement of the plunger 26'will cause this lubricant to be displaced from the smaller portion 11 of the bore into the larger portion, the valve 13 being opened'by the flow of lubricant. After the valve 13 has opened slightly and a portion of the lubricant has been displaced from the high pressure cylinder'into the portion 10 of the bore, the presvided means which insures the complete displacement of each charge from the high pressure cylinder, so that when the plunger 26 is moved outwardly, it will create a perfect vacuum between its inner end and the valve 13. The provision of means for insuring the complete displacement of the contents of the vhigh pressure cylinder is very important where grease or other heavy lubricants which usually contain entrapped air are to be forced into bearings, because, in the absence of such means, there is a tendency for the air, when it reaches the cylinder of the pump, merely to be compressed and then re-expand in the cylinder without being discharged therefrom, so that the function of the cylinder is destroyed. With my means, however, each charge delivered to the high pressure cylinder, whether it be lubricant, alr or a mixture of the two, is completely displaced therefrom so that the return stroke of the plunger creates a complete vacuum in the high pressure cylinder and thereby makes it possible for atmospheric pressure to move the follower 25 inwardly and assure the delivery of successive char es to the high pressure cylinder.
WhileI have described the details of construction of the preferred embodiment of my invention, it is to be clearly understood that my invention is not limited to these details, but is capable of other adaptations and modilications cming within the scope of the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, what I claimas new and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the zUnited States, is:
1. A lubricant compressor comprising a low pressure cylinder' having a closure for one end thereof, said closure having a bore extending therethrough, the inner end of said bore being larger than the outer end thereof to form a valve seat between the two portions ,of said bore, said closure having an opening for establishing communication between said cylinder and the smaller portion of said bore, a plunger slidable in the smaller portion of said bore, a valve slidable in the larger portion of said bore, a spring for yieldingly hold- Ying said valve on said seat, said plunger being of such length that it can contact with and open said valve, a base for said cylinder extending substantially parallel therewith, and a handle for actuating said plunger extending over said base.

A lubricant compressor comprising a low pressure cylinder having a closure for one end thereof, said closure-having a bore extending therethrough, the inner end of. said bore being larger than the outer end thereof to form a valve seat between the two .portions of said-borc, said closurehaving an opening for establishing communication between said cylinder and the smaller portion of said bore, a plunger slidable in the smaller portion of said bore, a valve slidable in the larger por,-

5. A lubricant compressor comprising a low `pressure cylinder, a high pressure cylinder communicating with said low pressure .cylinder, a plunger for said high pressure cylinder, saidj plunger being of such length as to extend outwardly beyond the discharge vend of said high pressure cylinder when it is forced inwardly to the end of itsstroke. a-

A lubricant compressor comprising a low pressure cylinder ope-n to atmosphere, a high pressure cylinder communicating with said low pressure cylinder a plunger for completely displacing the contents of said lhigh pressure cylinder, a check valve forming cylinder, andmeans including part of saidlever for limiting the upward movement of said lever relatively to said low pressure cylinder, whereby said lever may be used for actuating said plunger and for carrying said compressor.
9. A lubricant compressor comprising a horizontally disposed low pressure cylin a high pressure cylinder communicating with said low pressure cylinder, a plunger slidable in said high pressure eylinder, and a lever for actuating said plunger and means including anv extension of said lever for limiting the upward movement of said l'ever relatively to said low pressurecylinder, whereby said lever may be-used for actuating said'plunger and for carrying said compressor.
