yApplication filed mich is,` 1926. seriaizNp. 95,779.
This invention relates yto engineilathes or similar machine tools inwhicli a .plurality ot; tools are to be given independent movenients toward andV "from the Work.` It ,frequent-ly happens that thetoiols must the positioned closely adjacent each other and in such cases the provision of suitable independent operating' inechanisni 'for each tool is attendedfwith considerabledifficulty. y `1 .c
lt is the Vgeneral object of my present invent-ion to provide improved operating .mech-1 anism for multiple' tool slides, such that closely adjacent tools mayconveniently be given independent movements as Athe. tools travel along thevvorl.
In the preferred form, my invention con- Y templates theprovision of a templet bar or Vcam bar of special Construction by which the advantages abovedescribed maybe ttlledf My invention urthergrelates to arrangements `and' combinationsof 'parts which will be hereinafter described and-more lparticularly pointed out in the appended claims,
A preferredtorm ofthe invention is shown in the drawingsin which Fig. 1 isa plan View of a portion of a lathe embodying my invention;l y
Fig. 2 is a sectionalfelevation talfIenlong VV thelines 2-2 inFig. 1', and
Fig. 3 is a detailed sectional elevation I taken aloiigthe line `3--3 in Fig. 1.
Referring tothe;drawings7 I haveshoivn a trame 10 having.v guide Ways .1L-for a`tool` carriage 12 which is moved axially of the AWork lV along the frame r1.0 by any coin venient operating mechanism (not shown). f
A plurality of turning or cutting tools T are moiintedseparately in tool slides 18, each slide being separately movable in the tool' carriage' 12. If it is desired to havethe tools T operate closely adjacent to eachother, the tool slides 13 may be angularly disposed as shown in Fig. 1.
Each tool slide 13 has bearings at the front and rear portions of the ltoolcarriage 12, and is provided With a sleeve creasing member 14: on which is mounted a templet block 15. Each block 15 also cooperates with a slot 12a in thev carriage`12 to prevent*angularl displacement of the `tool slide.y The templet blocks 15 engage a templetbai'-16 extending f y With cam portions lying in dilterent planes.' i Athis yresult being vconveniently attainedby mounting anauxiliar-y camplate 116il onthe vupper surfaceof the templet bar 16. -The `templet blocks 15 oi certain of the tool slides Cooperate 4with the cam faceof the templet bar` 16, While one or more other `templct blocks 15, as shown in Fig. 3, aredisposed at a higher elevation so that theyivill cooperate Withthecam plate 16a.
Inn this manner I am ableto separately vaotuate tool slides positioned Closely afdjacent to each other, and in. cases whenfthe travel of the tool carriage is greater than the distance between adgacent slides.y A spring 17 andcplunger 18 are provided for eaclitool slide, ythese springsand plungers being mounted in the tool carriage 12 and engagingr the` Vrear sides of the templet blocks 15 or 15a forcing the blocks yieldingly against the :templet bar 16er cam` plate 16a.r
The tools .T may be adjusted in as shown herein each tool'T` is provided with t l the tool slides 13 by anyconvenient mechanism, but
a head 20 atits rear end and an 'adjusting vsc'revv 21 `is providedwith a similar head 4k.The heads 2 0 and 22 are held in close relation by a sectional recessed `collar .23.
The screw 21 isthre led in the. tool slide 13 and a i suitablehandle 24 isfurnished, by which: the
tool maybe convenientlyadj usted.
' A bearing member 251s secured to the front of the tool carriage 12 andprovides afreinforcement for the templetbar 16, taking the forward thrust of the spring plungers 18.
Having thus described my invention and the advantages thereof, the method of operation Will'bey readilyl apparent. `As the tool carriage 12 moves axially of the Work XV, thel f templet blocks 15 andfla cooperate With the templet har` 16v and lcam plate 16@ to sepatoward the Work, land to thereafter permit retraction thereof by the pressure ofthe springs 17. The tools T maybe adjusted rately and selectively advance thetoel slides sain lane. 20` e l) means above described and the entire mechanism is found to be very eficient and reliable for the purpose described. 'l
Having thus described my invention and the advantages thereof, I do not Wish to be limited to the details herein disclosed'otherwise than as set forth in the claims, but what lI Vclaim is zv l. Ina inachineltool, a frame, a tool carriage slidable longitudinally of the Work on said frame, a. plurality of directly actuated tool slides mounted for transverse movement in said'tool carriage toward and from the work, a templet bar held from longitudinal movement and havingcam portions in different planes, and t-emplet 'blocks on said tool slides, each block being in one of said planes andy cooperating with a cam portion inthe 2. In a machine tool, a franie,'la tool carriage slidable longitudinally of the Work on saidk frame, a plurality of directly actuated tool slides mounted for transversemovement inV said tool carriage toi'vard andfrom the Work, and a teinplet bar fixed to said frame and having upper and Alower cam portions thereon, `1 certain of said tool slides having templetblocks cooperating With the lower camportions of sai d templet bar Vand the ref inaining tool slides having templet blocks cooperating with theupper cam portions thereof.
3. In a machine tool, a frame, a tool cari'iageslidable longitudinally of the Workon said -frame, a plurality of'direetly actuated tool slides mountedfor transverse movement in said tool carriage toward and from the Work, said toolvslides each having a templet block with the blocks on adjaeentslides positioned in different planes, and fixed cam meinbeis'positioned in corresponding planes and n Y I slide, saidcam means comprising a fixed tenieooperating therewith. I Il. Ina machine tool, a frame, a tool ear vriage slidable longitudinally of the Work 'on lsaid frame, ,a plurality of directly `actuated tool slidesmounted for transverse movement l in saidy tool Vcarriage toward and from the Work, a templet bar held from longitudinal element.
in said. toolr carriage toward and from the work, adjacent slides having cam Yiollowers in different planes, and a teinplet bar having cam portions cooperating with said followers and in corresponding planes. v, f
6. In a machin-e tool,a frame, a tool :arriage slidable'longitudinally of the Work on said frame, a plurality ofy directly actuated tool slides mounted fortransverse movementin said tool carriagevtoWai-d and from thek 'Work, a teinpletbar held from longitudinal movement andk having cam portions in different planes, and templet blocks on said tool slides, each block being in one of said planes and`A cooperating with a camV portion in the same plane, said templet ba'r having also ra straight face and said carriage having a bearing member adiacent said straight face and acting as a guide and bearing for said tenipletV bar. Y l 7. In a machine'tool, a frame, a tool carriage slidable thereon, afplurality of directly Htl actuated tool slides mounted onl said tool'carriage for movement in nonparallelY paths to#vr Ward` and from the work, and cam means lto separately operategeach tool slide.,
v8. In a machine tool, a frame, a .tool cai'-V riage slidable4 thereon, a plurality of directly .actuated tool slides mounted on said tool car- 'riageforinovement in non-parallel paths,
and cam means to separately operate each tool plet bar, aA teinplet block on each tool'slide,
causing the corresponding tem-plet block to yieldiiiglyengage 'said templet bar.
Intestimony whereof I fixedmy signature.Y l
