INVENTOR ATTORNEY WITNESS:

UNITED STATES retain EMIL H. DIEBOLD, OF NEWARK, NEW JERSEY.
SIGN.
Application led August 5i, 1927. Serial No. 210,948.
The present invention relates to signs, particularly to signs used in the outdoors in a setting of rural scenery.
@bjects of vthe invention are to produce a neat and attractive sign which will not offend the artistic sense of a tourist and which will not obstruct the view of the landscape setting in which the sign is placed.
In the drawings: v
Figure 1 is an elevation showing by way of illustration a sign embodying the principles of my invention. y
Figure 2 is a cross section on the line 2-,2 of Figure 1, showing the parts on an enlarged scale.
Figure?) is a viewV on a di'erent scale showing a modified form of the'invention.
Figure 4 is a section on the Vline 4-4 of Figure 3.
Figure 5 is a fragmentary detail on an enlarged scale, showing the connection of the letters of the sign to the frame.
Referring to the drawings in detail, 10 designates struts or posts which may be of metal or any other suitable material, which Inay be sunk into the ground. In the rear of the sign I provide braces 11v connected with the struts 10 at an angle and also sunk into the ground. These braces may be connected with the struts intermediate of their ends by cross members 12. Mounted upon these postsl() are upper and lower angle members 13 and 14 upon-which may be placed the letters of the sign. Each letter is preferably outlined by a marginal strip or frame 15, the space within the frame being filled in with foraminous material such as used in fly screens. nous material is held within the frame in any suitable manner, preferably the edges of the'frame, which may be of bendable metal, are bent over to form a groove 16 and to grasp between the walls thereof the edges of the screen material.
The letters are connected to the l angle members 13 and 14 in any suitable manner as by bolts 17. By the use of the bolts they letters are made removable and interchange- The foramiable. i It will be readily understood that the sign may be varied from time to time.
In the device as shown in Figures 3, 4 and l 5, the angle members 18 and 14 are connected at their ends by angle members 18 and the entire frame formed by the members 13, 14
and the members 18 is filled with wire screen 19. The letters in this form ofthe invention are set in the frame against the wire netting A sign of the character of either of the modifications herein shown, it will readily be seen, will attractively display the` legend desired and at the same time will not cut olf the View of the landscape in the rear thereof. Such a sign may be set in the bend of a road and a person driving a car will be able to see the contour of the land and may approach without danger.
Having described the invention what I Claim is:
1. A sign of the character described comprising a frame, strips forming the marginal outline of letters and beingsecured to the frame at their lower and upper ends, and foraminous `material arranged across the -space between the margins of said letters whereby the scenery inthe rear of the sign can be seen through the margins of saidl letters.
2. A sign of the character described comprising a frame, upper and lower angle memn bers included in said frame, strips forming letters, ears extending from the upper and lower ends of said letters, bars arranged in parallelism with vertical portions of said angle membersand means for securing'the bars to the vertical portions and clamping the ears between the bars and Vertical portions. y
In testimony whereof I affix my signature.
