UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CHARLES J. NASH, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR TO UNIVERSAL DRAFT GEAR ATTACHMENT CO., A
CORPORATION OF ILLINOIS.
DRAFT RIGGING Foa RAILWAY CARS.
Application filed August 24 1926. Serial No. 131,21-8.
Thel invention relates particularly to mechanism for transferring the stresses of draft and buiiing to the frame of the car, its objects being fully hereinafter pointed o-ut.
The invention consists in a structure such as is described, and is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Fig. 1 is a detail longitudinal, vertical, cen` tral section of a railway car embodying the invention; and
Fig. 2 is a detail plan view of the underframing of the. car, partly in section.
A pair of draft sills are shown at 10, 11, of ordinary construction, each being provided at its forward end with a longitudinal slot 12 for the accommodation of the draft key 13 which connects the coupler butt 14 with the yoke 15 for enclosing the draft gear 16. The parts 13 to 16 are of any ordinary and preferred form, the draft gear shown for the purposes of illustrating the invention being of the lVestinghouse type, the rear end of the casing of the gear being laterally extended as shown at 17 to serve as a follower. The forward follower 18 is of the ordinary plate type.
Attached by suitable means such as rivets, to the forward end of each of the draft-sills 1()7 11, is a draft lug 19 slotted as shown at 2O for the accommodation of the key 13, its slot being surrounded by a iiange 21 which fits within the sill slot 12.
A pair of buiiing lugs 22, 23 are attached to the sills 10, 11 by rivets or other suitable means in position to engage the rear end 17 of the draft gear when the latter is in release, and to sustain the shocks of buff.
Each of the buHng lugs is provided with .I forwardly projecting 18. The portions of the draft sills lying bestructed, thereby permitting the use of a follower 18 substantially equal in width to the space between the inner faces of the two sills,
and thus having a wide bearing upon the draft lugs.
I claim as my invention:
A draft rigging for railway cars compris,- ing, in combination a draft ing follower shoulders, and a pair of buiting lugs cooperating with such shoulders and having forward extensions for guiding the casing, the forward end of such extensions forming stop shoulders for engaging aV follower, said stop shoulders being positioned in advance of the end of the gear casing, so that the follower cannot engage the casing on buff until after it has engagedy the stop shoulders.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature.
CHARLES J. NASH.
