after the same have performed the intended purpose thereby insuring against the operation of the machine to deliver goods more than once by a coin or check in the machine, and also preventing choking of the mechanism.
Important novel features of the invention also lie in the special compact construction of the locking mechanism and arrangement of the same with an end plate of the machine casing in the form of a single unit, and the v particular association of the locking means with and connection of the same to the de livery means of the machine whereby the vending machine as a whole'is of compact form and the parts can be readily assembled and removed.
The invention, with other objects and advantages thereof, and the particular constructlon, combinations and arrangements of parts comprising the same, will be understood from the hereinafter contained detailed description, when considered in connection with the accompanying drawings, forming part hereof, and illustrating one embodiment of the invention.

The invention is particularly *adapted for and in the drawings is exemplified in connection with one of the well known forms ofapparatus for dispensing paper drinking cups, the same comprising (see particular- Figures 1, 2, v3) and 6) a cylindrical casing part 1 having at its top a socket part 2 in which is detachably seated a container 3 for a stack of nested paper cups. Mounted for rotation within the cylindrical casing part 1 is a delivery drum or member 4 .adapted to feed the cups singly from the nested stack to a delivery openm 5 in the cylindrical casing part 1. ' able end plate 17 of the cylindrical casing part 1 is provided at its inner side with a segmental recess 22, an annular shoulder 23, and a peripheral flange, 24, and the central boss or hub part 19 has shoulder portions 25, 26. Fixedly secured-toithe removable end plate 17 at its inner side isa plate 27. The plate 27, which has a central opening, fits over the central boss or hub part 19 against 'the shoulder portion of the hub part 19 and the outer face of the peripheral flange 24 of the end plate, and is detachably secured to the end plate 17 by screws 28. Mounted for rotation on the central boss or hub part 19 of the removable end plate 17 between said plate and the plate 27 is a circular plate or disk.29. The circular plate or disk 29, which has an open central bearing to rotatably engage theboss or hub part 19, is held in place between the plate 27 and the shoulders -23 and 25 of the end plate, the engagement between the parts being such as to permit of free. independent rotation of the disk '29. The rotatable delivery member or drum 4 is coupled to the rotatable disk 29 against rotation relatively to the disk. The connection is made by a stud 30 on the end plate 4 of the delivery member or. drum detachablyengaging an aperture 31 in the disk 29, the stationary plate 27 being provided with a segmental slot 32 in which the e oted at one end to the part 38 on the plate 27 and has at its other end a locking tooth 38 that works through an .opening 39 in the plate 27. 40designates the spring for the detent or pawl 37 secured at one end to the plate 27 by a screw 41 and one of the screws 28, and at its other end engaging the outer end portion of the 'detent 37. The detent or pawl 37 has at one side intermediate its ends a pin 42 provided with aiconical shaped end, said pin extending through an openin 43 in the plat 27. The disk 29' normally, through its con ection with the delivery member or drum 4,-is yieldably held by the spring 6 in the ,.-position illustrated in -Fi ure 7 of thedrawings, the coin pocket of t e disk 29 being in alignment with a coin slot 44 in the peripheral flange 24 of theend plate 17 the plate 17 being shown asalso provided with an opening 45 to the side of the coin slot 44 to facilitate the insertion of the coin through said slot 44 into the coin pocket of the disk 29. With the disk 29 occupying the position referred to, the detent or pawl 37 occupies the position illustrated in Figure 11 of the drawings, the conical end of the pin 42 on .the detent extending into the groove 35 of the disk 29, and thelocking tooth 38" of the detent or pawl 37 projecting into the opening 36 in the disk 29 in position to engage the beveled'end wall 36. The opening 36 in. the disk 29 is of a length to provide for a limited rotary movement of the disk 29 before the beveled end wall 36 of the opening 36 in the disk will reach the locking tooth 38 of the detent 37. When a coin or check 46' of the proper size is inserted into the coin pocket of the disk 29 through the coin slot 44, upon rotation of the delivery drum or member 4 and disk 29 in 35 designates a.

The disk 29 may be and preferably is provided with" a plurality of teeth 47 adjacent the beveled end wall 36 of the opening 36 in the disk 29 to cooperate with the locking tooth 38 of the detent 37 to lock the disk 29 against rotation should the bevel end Wall 36 of the disk be broken or the locking tooth 38 of the detent or pawl be forced past thesanie in an attempt to operate the machine Without inserting the proper coin or check. I
Means is provided for positively ejecting the coin or check from the disk 29 in order to avoid choking or jamming of the mecha- V nism, and to guard against the operation of the machine more than once by the same coin or check in the coin pocket of the disk 29. The means for this purpose comprises an ejector member connectedwith the disk for movement therewith and to rock relatively thereto in combination with means for holding the ejector member from rocking movement during the first part of the rotary movement of the disk 29, and for rocking the same at the latter part of the rotary movement of the disk 29, the ejector member having a portion, which during its rocking movement travels radially outward in the coin pocket of the disk 29. Referring particularly. to Figures 7 to 10, and 14 and 15 of the drawings, 48 designates the ejector member in the form of an elongated flat plate part mounted in the recess 22 0f the end plate 17. The ejector member 48 is pivotally connected at one end to the disk 29 near its periphery by a stud 4.9 on one side of the ejector member engaging a bearing 50in the adjacent face of the disk 29, the side faces of the ejector member 48 slidably engaging the bottom wall of the recess 22 and the face of the disk 29.
' The ejector member near'its other end at one in the disk extending inwardly thereof from the bottom of the coin pocket of the disk.
At the other side located opposite the projection 51, the ejector member has a pin or laterally projecting portion 53, which slidably engages agroove or channel in the bottom wall of the recess 22. The groove .or channel, which extends from apoint in radial alignment with the central point of the coin pocket of the disk 29, for its greater part 54 is concentric with the axis of rotation of the disk 29 and terminates in a cam part 55. The ejector member 48 is provided at one side with a curved notched portion 56, and 57 is a pin or abutment part on the end plate 17 extending into the recess 22. During the greater part of the rotation of the disk 29, the ejector 48 through the'en- I gagement of the lateral projection 51. with the concentric part 54 of' the groove or channel in the end plate 17, .will he held from movement relatively to the disk 29, the ejector member 48remaining in the same position relative to the disk as that illustrated Figure 7. In the latter part of the rotary movement of the disk 29, as the lateral pr0- jection 53 of the ejector member travels through the cam portion 55 of the channel or groove (see Figure 8.) the ejector will be rocked relatively to the disk 29, and in this rocking movement its lateral projecting portion 51 will be caused to sweep radially outward from the slot 52 in the disk 29 into and through the coin pocket of the disk forcing the coin outwardly from the coin pocket through a slot 58 in the flange 24 of the end plate 17 into the coin box 9. In the rotation of the disk '29, the pin or abutment part 57 on the end plate 17 engages the curved notched portion 56 of the ejector member 48, as illustrated Figure 8, and assists in the rocking action. As will be understood upon the return movement of the disk 29 and delivery drum or member 4, the ejector member 48 Will be returned to the position illustrated Figure 7 of the drawings.
Means is provided to prevent the disk 29 and the deliverymember or drum 4 from returning to normal position after a coin or "check has been inserted in the coin pocket of the disk and the same partly turned, until the delivery member or drum 4 and the disk 29 have been moved through the full cup feeding movement and the coin or check has been ejected from the disk. Referring particularly to Figures 6 and 13 of the drawings, the means for this purpose comprises a series of locking notches 59 in the periphery of the end plate 4 of the delivery drum or member 4, and a pivoted spring held locking member 60 cooperating therewith. 'At either end of the series of locking notchesi59 is a larger opening or notch 61. The locking member 60 is pivotally mountedon a pin 62 on'the wall of the casing part 9 and works through an opening 63 in the cylindrical casing part 4. The locking member 60 is yieldably held in the position illustrated Figure 13 by a tension spring 64 connected with an arm 65 on the locking member 60 and a pin 66 on the casing part 9. The diflerencebetween the two diameters of coins or checks, as will be understood, is provided for, as regards the operation of the detent or pawl 74, by the location of the lpck- I ing tooth 75 of the detent or pawl relatively to the beveled end wall 73 of the opening 7 3 in the disk 74, the distance between the locking tooth 75 of the detent or pawl 74 and the beveled end-wall 73 of the disk being increased, the mechanism readily lending itself to be operated through the coin or checks of different sizes within certain limits without requiring any material change in structure. It will be noted that by the particular construction and arrangement of parts hereinbefore set forth, a simple, practical form of coin or check controlled locking mechanism is provided which will be reliable and eflig dent in use. The special coin ejecting means functions in a positive way tofree the locking disk of the-coin or check, preventing choking of the mechanism and the operation of the machine more than once by a coin in the pocket ofthe locking disk. The construction is of a compact nature and, as
The machine may be will be appreciated the arrangement of the check controlled lockingmechanism' as a unit with the removable end plate of the casing, and the particular arrangement and detaclr able coupling of the mechanism with the goods delivery member or drum is of material advantage in the assembly of the parts.
While a specific embodiment of the inven-. tion is illustrated in the drawings, it will of course be understood that minor changes and modifications in the particular coin controlled mechanism shown, and the embodiment of the same in other forms associated with other forms of vending apparatus adapted forvending various kinds of goods, as will appeal to those skilled in the art and falling within the scope of the appended claims, may be practiced Withoutdep-arting from the spirit of the invention.
What I claim is:
1; In a vending machine, a rotatable delivery part, and check controlled locking mechanism for said part including a rotatable disk to which said part is fixed'against relative rotation, said disk being provided with a peripheral coin receiving .and holding pocket, a detent to lock the disk from rotation in one direction and adapted to be held out of operative position by acoin in the pocket ofthe disk, and coin ejecting means comprising a member independent of the coin pocket, said member being supported on the disk to one side of the coin'pocket thereof, and said member having a coin engaging portion extending laterally in the plane of the coin pocket of the disk and being movable relatively to the disk to move its coin engaging portion outwardly within the coin pocket toward the periphery of the disk to 'force acoin radially outward from the coin pocket of the disk, and actuating means for said member.
2. In a vending machine, a rotatable de- 'livery part, and check cont-rolled locking mechanism for said art including a rotatable disk to which said part is fixed against relative rotation, said disk being provided with a peripheral coin receiving pocket, a detent to lock the disk from rotation in one direction and adapted to be held out of operative position by a coinin the pocket of the disk, and coin ejectin means including an ejector member pivota ly connected with the disk for movement therewith and for rocking movement relatively thereto, and means 'to hold the ejector member from rocking movement relatively to the disk through a part of the rotary movement of the disk, and to rock the ejector member relatively to the disk during apart of the rotary movement of the disk, said means including a stationary part provided with a guide channel, and a part on the ejector engaging said channel.
6. In a vending machine, a rotatable delivery part, and check controlled locking mechanism for said part including a rotatable disk to which said part is fixed against relative rotation, said disk being rovided with a peripheral coin receiving poc et, a detent to lock the disk from rotation in one direction and adapted-to be held out of opera tive position by a coin in the pocket of the v disk, and' coin ejecting means including an ejector member pivotally connected with the disk for movement therewith and for rocking movement relatively thereto, and means to hold. he ejector member from rocking movement relatively to the disk through a part of the rotary movement of the disk, and to rock the ejector member relatively to the disk during another part of the rotary movement of the disk, said means including a stationary part provided with a cam groove, and a part on the v ejector engaging said cam 'groove.

In a vending machine, a rotatable delivery part, and check controlled locking mechanism for said part including a rotatable disk to which said part is fixed against relative rotation, said disk being provided with a peripheral coin receiving and holding pocket, a detent to lock the disk from rotation in one direction and adapted to be held out of operative position by a coin in the pocket of the disk, and coin ejecting means including an ejector member independent of the coin pocket pivotally connected with the disk for movement therewith and for rocking move-.

In a vending machine, a .roatable delivery part, and check controlled locking mechanism for said part including a rotatable disk to which'said part is fixed against relative rotation, said disk being provided with a peripheral coin receiving pocket and having a slot extending inwardly from the bottom parttof said pocket, a detent to lock the disk against rotation in one direction and adapted to be held out of locking engagement with the disk by a coin in the pocket of the disk, a stationary plate at one side of the disk against which the disk slidably fits, said plate being provided with a recess in its inner face, an ejector mem er arranged to slide and rock in said recess between the plate and disk, the ejector member comprising an elongated fiat plate part having a projection near one end pivotally engaging a recess in the disk near its periphery, and havinga coin engaging portion normally projecting into the slot of the disk, and means for holding. the ejector member from movement relatively to the disk through a part of the rotary movement of the disk, and for rocking the ejector member near the end of the rotary movement of the disk, said means including a cam groove in the stationa plate and a projection near one end' of t e ejector plate engaging said groove.
16. In a vending machine, a rotatable delivery part, and check controlled locking mechanism for said part including a rotatable disk to which said part is fixed against relative rotation, said disk being provided with a peripheral coin pocket and a channel extending from one side thereof, a stationary plate member at one side of the disk provided with twoopenings therein, and a pivoted spring pressed detent mounted on said plate at one side thereof, the detent being provided with a locking tooth normally extending through one of the openings in the plate to the other side of the plate in the path of movement of a part on the disk, and said detent having a pin thereon projecting from one side thereof through the other opening inthe plate into the said channel of the disk at one side of the coin pocket and adapted to beengaged by a coin in the coin pocket of the disk to shift thev detent and move its locking tooth out of operative position.
2 17 In a vending machine, a rotatable de- ,livery part, and check controlled locking 'mechanism for said part including a rotatable disk to Which said part is fixed against relative rotation, said disk being provided with a peripheral coin pocket and having a groove in one side face extending from one side of the coin po,cket, a stationary plate member at one side of the disk provided with two openings therein, and a pivoted spring pressed detent mounted on the plate at one side thereof, the detent being provided with a locking tooth normally extending through one of the openings in the plate to the other side of the plate in the path of movement of a part on the disk, and said detent having a pin projecting from one side thereof through i the other opening in the plate into the said groove of the disk and adapted to be engaged by a coin in the coin pocket of the disk to shift the detent and move its locking tooth v out'of operative position.

In'a vending machine, a rotatable delivery part, and *check controlled locking mechanism for said part including a rotatable disk to which said part is fixed against relatixgej rotation, said disk being provided with zit peripheral coin receivingpocket, a'detent to lock the disk from rotation in one pocket pivotally mounted on the disk to one side of the coin pocket thereof and having a' laterally projecting coin engaging portion extending in the plane of the coin pocket, said member being movable to move its coin engaging portionoutwardly within the coin pocket toward the periphery of the disk to force a coin from the coin pocket, and actuatdisk to which said part is fixed against rela-' tive rotation, said disk being provided 'With a peripheral coin receiving pocket having side Walls and a fixed bottom Wall and aslot extending inwardly from the bottom wall of said pocket, a detent to lock the disk against rotation in one direction and adapted to be moved out of operative position to lock the.
