FURNACE-WALL STRUCTURE.

My invention relates to stokers and has special reference to the construction of the walls of the fire box or chamber of stokers of the underfeed type.
The principal objectof the invention is to provide novel and improved means for preventing the formation of clinkers on the side and bridge walls of stokers, especially under.- feed stokers in which the underfeed method of feeding and burning the coal tends to produce an adhering effect on refractory surfaces between the clinkers and ashes.
Another object of the invention is to provide afnovel and improved wall structure for the ire box of a Stoker.
The several features of the invention, whereby the above-mentioned and other objects may-be fattained, will be clearly understood from the following description and accompanying drawings, in which:

The underfeedA Stoker illustrated in the drawings is provided with a lire box orchamber 2, an undcrfeed grade section 4 compris- 'ing a plurality of downwardly and rearward-- 1y inclined retorts and tuy're structures alter nately arranged, an ash pit 6, a dump grate 7 extending across thel ash pit, and a wind box 8 located beneath the retorts and-tuyr structures to which air is supplied under pressure through a conduit 1() .which is con'- trolled by dampers 12. In underfeed stokers, because of the method l of feeding and burning the coal, considerable difliculty has been experienced bythe formation of clinkers on the side and bridge walls of the fire box or chamber. i-In the illustrated construction novel andv improved #means is provided for overcoming this difficulty, and
4 while such means is shown in the drawings as associated with merely the bridge wall it will be apparent that similar means may be associated with the side walls of the furnace. As shown, the bridge wall is provided with an in- Wardly opening channel 20 extending between the side" Walls and horizontally arranged. The side walls are provided with cylindrical openings 22 that are provided with sleeve linings 23 and are arranged in alinement with said channel. A water spray pipe 24 extends through said openings 22 and through the channel, and is provided with a series of apertures 26 for spraying the water into the ash pit of the furnace ata point in proximity to and slightly above the rear edge of the dump grate 7 Each end of the spray pipe 24 is connected by a union 28 with a pipe 30 which in turn is in communication with a branch pipe 32 connected with a suitable source of water supply, a branch pipe34 connected with aA suitable source of steam suppl and a blowolf plpe 36 which is arrange in alinement with the pipe 30, the pipes 32, 34' and 36 being l two adjacent partitions, spaced a distance below the upper edge thereof, and through which fluid discharged from the spray pipe 24 may be directed into the ash pit. The several sections'of the housing 38 have their forward portions supported upon a faceplate 44 which is inserted in the bridge wall and has'its front side arranged flush with the inner side of the front sides of the housing and bridge wall. The face plate 44 is made in sections ar ranged `end to end and corresponding in length and arrangement to the sections of the housing 38. The under side of each section of the housing is provided with a'series of four depending lugs 46 whic-hare arranged back of a shoulder 48 formed` on each section of the face plate. Each section of the face plate is further provided with a rearward extension having a longitudinally extending depending lug 52 on its rear edge. The rear portion of the several sections of the housing 38 is provided with depending lugs 53 that are supported by a horizontally arranged plate 54 inserted in the bridge wall. The supporting plate 54 is made in sections arranged end to end and corresponding in length and arrangement to the several sections of the housing 38 andthe. face plate 44. The forward edge of each section of the supporting plate 54 is provided adjacent its ends, with forwardly projecting lugs 56 that are spaced a distance below the top of the plate and have upwardly turned ends 57 which cooperate with the lug 52 to holdthe face plate 44 in position. lVith this construction, upon water being admitted to the spray pipe 24 from the valve controlled water supply pipe 32, the water discharged through the perforationsl 26 will be sprayed through the several openings 42 and into the ash Y pit. Such spraying of the ashes will maintain them moist and cool and thus will effectively prevent 'clinkers from forming on the lower portion of the bridge wall. Also, as the spraying device is located in proximity to the rear edge portion of the dump grate 7, the latter will be protected from overheating. As the spray pipe 24 is spaced a considerable distance from the outlet ends of the openings 42 it will be apparent that there is very little, if any, danger of the perforations26 becoming clogged.
By closing the valve of the water supply I pipes 32 and opening one of the steam pipes 34 and the valve of the opposite blow-off pipe 36, steam may be admitted to blow out the pipe and the spraying aperture. 26 in the pipe,
The lining sleeves 23 of the openings 22 are of sufficient diameter to permit the spray pipe 24, when the unions 28 are disconnected, to be slipped bodily out of the lining sleeves and the channel 12. When the pipe 24 has been removed, the several sections of the face. plate 44 may be removed upon breaking away slightly a part of the masonry of theA bridge wall, and as the face plate holds the sections of the housing in place these sections may then 'f be removed.
As will be evident to those skilled lin the art, my invention permits various modifications without departing from the spirit thereof or the scope of the appended claims.
What I claim is:
1. A furnace chamber having at leastorrone of its walls provided with an inwardly opening channel horizontally arranged and at least one of the two adjacent walls provided with an opening in alinement with said channel, a spray pipe extending through said,
opening and channel and removable therefrom, 'a housing enclosing said pipe, made in sections and inserted in said channel, each section having a longitudinally extending opening in its inner wall spaced a distance A g .n
from the upper edge thereof, and a face plate removably inserted in said wall directly beneath said housing' and forn'iing a partof the inner side of said -wall, said face plate and housing sections having engaging portions for detachably holding the housing in place. 2. A furnace chamber having at least one of its wallsprovided with an inwardly opening channel horizontally arranged, and at least one of the two adjacent walls provided with an opening in alinement with said channel, a spray pipe extending through said opening and channel and removable therefrom, a housing made in sect-ions arranged end to end and enclosing said spray pipe, each section having an opening through which fluid discharged from said pipe may be directed, a face plate inserted in said wall directly beneath the sections of said housing, each section of said housinghaving depending lugs and said face plate having cooperating lugs for locking said housing in place, and a second plate having its forward portion arranged beneath said housing and having portions cooperating with portions of said face plate for locking said face plate in place.
3. A furnace chamber having atleast one of its walls provided with an inwardly opening horizontal channel and the two adjacent walls provided with openings in alinement with said channel, a spray pipe extending through said openings and channel and re; movable therefrom, a housing enclosing said spray lpipe having the inner side of its inner wall substantially in the plane of the inner ing made in sections arranged end to end.
