ALL-METAL DOOR CONSTRUCTION.

This invention relates generally to doors and refers more particularly to metal doors that are designed for use with vehicle bodies of the closed type.
C ne of the essential objects of the invention isprovide a light and durable door of this type that is constructed entirely of metal and is provided with an exceptionally strong and gid frame which will prevent the door from weaving and twisting or otherwise weakening while in use.
Another object is to provide the frame of the door wi h simple and effective means for preventing the vertically movable window panel from wabbling or moving transversely of the door frame when in lowered position.
Further object is to provide a neat and attractive door that is simple in construction and can be manufactured at a comparatively low cost.
With the above and other objects in view the invention consists in certain novel features of construction, combinations and arragements of parts as will be more fully described and particularly pointed out in the appended claims.

Referring now to the drawing in which like characters of reference designate corresponding parts throughout the several views, the numeral 1 designates a door embodying my invention having a frame 2 that is preferably constructed of sheet metal. As shown, the frame preferably comprises the spaced upright members 4 and 5 respectivelyard the top and bottom cross members 6 and 7 respectively. To provide a strong and durable construction, the upright members 4 and 5 are preferably channel-shape in cross section and are provided at the outer edges thereo "h the laterally extending flanges 8 ivelyg while the top and bottom cross members 6 and 7 respectively arealso preferably channel-shape in cross section and areprovided at the lower outer edges thereof wth depending flanges 10 and 11 respectively. To provide a rigid connection, the top and bottom members 6 and 7 respectively are preferably welded to the upright members 4 and 5 respectively and are reinforced by a sheet metal panel 12 that conforms to the shape of the frame2 and ,const tutes the front exterior finish of the door. As shown, this panel is preferably provided at its bottom and side edges with returnbent flanges 13 and 14 respectively that are welded to the lateral flanges 8 of the upright members and to the depending flange 11 of the bottom cross member 7 The panel 12 is also preferably provided at its upper edge with rearwardly projecting flange 15 that is welded to the upper face of the top cross member 6.
In the upper portion of the panel 12 is relatively large opening 16 that is adapted to be closed by a su table. window 17. At the upper edge of this opening 16 is an inwardly extending flange 18 that preferably constitutes the window header finish strip and is preferably provided at its inner edge with a vertical off-set portion 19 that is welded to the depending flange 10 and to the lower face 20 of the top cross member 6 of the door frame. At the lower edge of the opening 16 is an inwardly extending flange 21 that constitutes the window sill and is preferably return-bent intermediate its ends to provide a. depending flange 22110 which a suitable rubber weather strip 23 is preferably secured for engagement with the outer face of the window 17. At the side edges ofthe opening 16 are a pair of substantially parallel inwardly extending flanges 24'that are preferably off-set laterallyand are welded to the flanges 9 and to the inner faces of the upright members 4 and 5 respectively Thus, portions of the panel 12 cooperate with the channel-shaped upright members 4 and 5 respectively and the channelshaped top cross member 6 to provide hollow box-like frame members which are extremely strong and durable and will prevent the door from weaving or J'wisting while i use. From the foregoing; description it will e readily apparent that l h ye provided an all metal door in which every bit oi wood has been e1 ninated. Thus, the door may be subjected to intense heat necessary in applying enamel. or paint finish without aliiecting the structure. Moreover, the window regulator arm 36 cooperates with the flanges 30 for guiding the window panel and preventing the same from swaying; inwardly, for instance when the door is jarred.
\Vhile it is believed that from the foregoing description the nature and advantages of the inyention will be readily apparent, I desire to have it understood that I. do not limit myself to what is herein shown and described, and. that such changes may be resorted to when desired as fall within the scope of what is claimed.
