COMBINATION WINDOW GUARD `AND DRAFrzDEFLEC-Ton. i
Application led March 22, 19,27. -Serial No. 177,391.
This invention relates'to certain novel improvements in combination window guards and draft deflectors and hasfor its principal object the provision of an improved construction of this character which will be highly eiiicient in use and economical in manufacture.
Among ythe salient objects of the invention is to provide a windowguard of the character hereinafter Adescribed adapted to be supported by the sill of va window struc-v ture and function whenthus supported to deflect the draft passing through the opening of the window structurey provided by raising the lower sash and to prevent dust and other particles of foreign matter fromentering into the room through this opening and which occupies such a position upon the window sill as not to permit a child to sit thereonA when the lowerrwindow sash is in raised position. l A l j Other objects will appear hereinafter.
The invention consists in the novel com-V Fig. 1 is an inside fragmentary elevationalv view of a window structure showing my improved combination window guard and draft deflector associated therewith,
Fig. 2 is a sectional detail view of the same taken substantially on line 2-2 of Figl, and I Fig. 3 is a top plan view of the invention.
To better illustrate the application of my invention l have shown in the drawing a window structure 10. This window structure 10 includes the side jambs 11 and sill 12. To this sill I associate my improved combination guard and draft deflector.
In the preferred form of construction the invention includes two sections 13 and 14.
Each section comprises a back wall 15 and a lateral wing 16 at one end thereof. The
wall and any foreign particles carried there with are deflected downwardly upon the sill adjustably mounted between spaced bars 20. These spaced .bars 20 have their corresponding end portions 21 connected tothe wing 16 of the section 13 in any approved manner 6o and the inner of the bars 20 extend longitudinally with respect to the lower .edge of the back wall 15 of the section 13 and is `connected thereto in any approved manner. j
Thev opposite corresponding ends 22 of the c5 bars 20 are connected togetherthrough the medium of a plate 23 secured to these end portions through the .medium of screw elements 24. The outer end portion of the end portions 26 overlapping the bars 2O and functioning to guidethe bar 19 with the cooperation ofthe plate 23 in its slidable movement between the bars 20.
`Secured to the outer longitudinal edge of .75 the vback wall 15 ofthe section 14iis a rein- .forcing strip 27, said reinforcing strip being secured to this back wall yin any approved manner. f Y. l
Connected to oneend portion of this strip and to the outer end -portion of the back wall15 of the section 13 are clampingvelements 28 adapted for clamping `engagementk with the edge 29 of the sill 12 forl detachably connect-ing the sections in draft defiecting position.
From Fig. 2 it will be seen that'when the combination guard and draft deector is mountedupon vthe sill 12 the vertical edges 30 of the wings 16 engage the inner plate 11 of the side jambs 11 and the back walls 15 extend longitudinally with respect to the edge 29 of the sill 12, thus providing together with the sill, a substantial box-shaped compartment which is adapted to receive the foreign particles enteringthrough the opening 12 provided by raising the lower As the draft enters this opening it strikes the back 12 while the draft takesa course upwardly toward the ceiling of the room.
By reason of the position occupied by my combination guard vand draft defiector it will be seen that a Child cannotsit upon the sill when the window sash 13 is in raised position.
By making my improved guard and draft deflector adjustable it will be'manifest that 11C the same may be associated with window structures iof various widths.
While I have illustrated and described the preferred form of construction for carry-V ing my invention into effect this is capable of variations and modifications without departing from the spirit of the invention. I, therefore, do not wish to be limited to the precise details set forth but desire to avail myself of such variations and modifications as come within the scope of the appended claims.
The invention having been set forth, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
l. ln a device of the Vclass described, two substantially L-shaped members, means for connecting the stem portion of said members together in slidable relation, spaced apart bars extending parallel to the stem portions of one of said members and suitably secured to the base portion thereof, a bar eX- tending parallel to the stem portion of the other of said vmembers and disposed between said spaced apart bars, and` meansfor lconnecting said members in slidable relation.
2. Ay combination window guard and draft deflector including two substantially L-shaped sections adapted to be disposed with the stem portions thereof arranged to entend upwardly ata right angle withv respect to the outer longitudinal edge of a window sill and adapt-ed to have the base l portions thereof extended toward the frame ofsaid window construction, means for connecting said stem portions whereby said stem v portions-are slidable relative to each other, a bracing member arranged along the lower edge of the outwardly disposed of said stem portions, substantially L-shaped members having` the base portions thereof arranged STEVE M.
