PLASTIC MATERIAL- FQRMIN G AND SMOOTI'IING DEVICE. 7
Application filed Febr uary 26, 1927. Serial No. 171,097.
My invention relates to a new and useful improvement in a plast c material smoothmg and forming device adapted for use particularly in smoothing cement and terrazzo floors and the like, which are made from a plastic material, and for use in smoothing tion with which there is formed a wallboard or base from the plasticmaterial'.
It is an object of the present invention to provide a device whereby the floor and wall or base board may be easily and'quickly smoothed and formed, and whereby a uniform planal surface on the outside of the wall or base board may be provided. I Another object of the invention is, in addition to the provision of a device where a saving of labor will be effected, the provision of a device for this purpose whereby a saving of material may also be effected.
Another object of the invention is the provision of a device of this kind which will be economical of manufacture, durable of struc-' ture, easy to operate and highly. eflicient .in use.
Other objects will appear hereinafter. The invention consists in the combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter described and claimed.
The invention will be best understood by a reference to the accompanying drawings which form a part of this specification and in which, a
Fig. 1 is a. sectional view taken on line 11 of Fig. 4%. I
Fig. 2 is a front elevational view of the invention.
Fig. 3 is a top plan view ofthe'invention.
Fig. 4 is a fragmentary sectional view taken on substantially line H of Fig. 1.
As shown in the drawings, the invention is adapted for use in smoothing the plastic material 9 which forms the floor of a room such as a bath room or the like, in which there is a base or wall board 10 formed from the same plastic material and integral with the floor 9.
In the invention I have provided a frame comprising the side rails 11 and 12, preferably made from angle iron, each of which is angularly turned to provide the laterally projecting portion 13 at its upper end and angularly turned to provide, adjacent its lower end, the angularly turned portion 14, which is again angularly turned as at 15 to extend parallel to the main body. Thes'e is particularly adapted, these floors, in conjunc- I angle irons are connected at their upper end by'a cross beam 16 which is also preferably an angle iron, and which has its ends 17 and 18 flared for purposes which will appear as the description proceeds. The angularly turned portions 15 of these side rails are connected by'the cross beam 19, projecting outwardly from which are the guide members20 and 21 which, when the device is in use, engages the face of the screed strip 22, the angle iron 19 resting on the upper/face of this screed strip 22. Bolted, or otherwise suitably secured to each of these side rails, at the lower end, is a trowel block 23, secured to the undersurface of'which and extending around the rearward side thereof, is a metallic plate 2% which forms a trowel on the block. I As shown in Fig. 1, the rearward side of'the block is provided with the rearwardly projecting nose 25. I
The device when constructed as described,
may be utilized for levelling the floor 9 and forming the base board 10, thus eliminating the necessity of handwork on this particular construction. The plastic material is deposited on the support which is intended to support the floor 9 and the device placed in position, as shown in Fig. 1, so as to press enough of the plastic materialbetween the trowel forming plate and the wall26 of the room.
The guide strips 20 and 21 will engage the face of the screed strip 22, as shown in Fig. 1, the angle iron 19 resting upon the upper surface of this screed strip. The angle iron" 16 engages the wall of the room and the dedo I vice moved laterally so as to smooth the plastic material forming the floor 9 and to form 7 and smooth the plastic material forming the base or w'all board 10. Ordinarily in operation the nose 25 will not be in engagement with the wall 26, as the guide strips 20 must be retained in engagement with the face of the screed strip. The screed strip sill therefore determine the plane of the wall and the base board 10, this beingdesirable on account of the depressions and rises in the wall 26. As the angle iron16 is drawn over the surface of the wall 26, the flared ends 17 and 18 will permit an easy and ready passage of this angle iron along the wall, where a projection may be present on the wall. The frame therefore serves as a trowel frame and the trowel forming plates carried on the block will serve as trowels for levelling the surfaces operated upon. Since the nose 25 does not engage the wall 26, there particularly will be a slight amount 01' the plastic material projecting upwardly from the upper surface 27 of this base board which may be easily and quickly removed by a workman using his hand trowel.
In this way, I have provided a device which is quite durable and simple in its structure, which may be operated by unskilled labor, and produced as vfi ished a job as a skilled artisan now customarily performs when working by hand. A considerable saving in labor results. The finish the job is far superior to the average job as now done, so that considerable advantage results from the use of this device.
if desired, this trowel, of course, may be mounted centrally oi the frame or at any other position, but it has been proven from experience that the mounting of the trowel at each end of the frame permits the use of the device for smoothing the plastic material,
close against the end walls of the room and particularly in corners and the like, thus reducing the hand operation to a minimum.
WVhile I have illustrated and described the preferred form of structure, I do not wish to limit myself to the precise details of struc ture shown, but desire to avail mysell' oil such variations and modifications as come within thescope ot' the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention on what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. A device of the class described comprising a lramev having side rails; a block mounted on each of said side rails; an L shaped trowel forming member mounted on. each of said blocks; a guide member carried by; said frame; and a nose on; the rearward side of said block projectingoutwardly from a vertically extending portion of said trowel forming member. Y
2'. A device of the class described, con'iprising: a frame a, horizontally extending troweli'orming member carried by said lrame; vertically extending trowel forming member carried by said frame, said frame projecting beyondt-he engaging surface of said vertiing: a frame; a vertically extending trowel forming member carried by said frame; a
horizontally extending trowel iforming 111G111". ber carried by said frame; and a smoothing member carried by said frame and pro ecting outwardly beyond the engaging face of said vertically extending trowel forming member. 4. A device oil the class described, comprismg: a lrame; a vertically extending trowel forming member carried by said: irame; a
horizontally extending trowel forming member carried by said frame; a smoothing member carried by said frame and projecting outwardly beyond the engaging face or said vertically extending trowel forming member; and a guide member carried by the outer side of said frame for engaging abutn'ient' and limiting withdrawal oi said vertically extendingtrowel forming member from said frame beyond a predetermined distance.
5. A device of the class described, compris ing: a frame having a pair of L- haped members the ends of each of the legs being angularly outwardly turned; a cross beam connecting the angularly turned upper ends or said frame; a cross beam connecting the angularly turned lower ends of said. frame;
a guide strip carried by said second mentioned cross beam and projecting downwardly below thelower surface oi said frame; a pair of blocks. secured to said traineuin spaced relation; a trowel member on the lower end inner face of each or" said blocks; a projection on the inner face oi each of said blocks extending beyond the upper edge of said trowel forming member on said face.
In testimony whereof if have signed the foregoing specification.
