POWER-DRIVEN vScissons ron BARBEaIs,
Application 1ed`August 12, 1927. Serial'pNko. 212,454,V
This invention `relates generally to power driven scissors adapted for use by barbers,
the invention having more particular reference to a novel type of power driven scissors which will act more efhciently.
The invention has for an object the provi.
sion of an improved power driven scissors of novel construction and arrangement of scription and accompanying drawings, andl to the appended 'claims 1n which the various novel features of the invention are more particularly set forth. i y
vFig. 1 of the drawings, isa front elevat-ional view of vmy improvedpower driven scissors. A f' Fig. 2 is a similar view, showing the cover removed so as to expose certain working parts.
Fig, 3 is a longitudinal sectional view taken on the line 3-3 of Fig. 2.
As here embodied my improved power driven scissors comprises a case 10, havingl an extended handle element 11, of hollow construction, and having a cover 12'with a detached to the case 10, as at-.14,by screws, Vbolts or the like. 'The handle ca-p 15, is provided with a flanged element 16, adapted to engage a recess 17,fformed in the ends of the handle elements 11 and 13, and is removably attached thereto, by screws, bolts, or the like.
The tubular member 18, is rotatively mounted in the bea-ring 19 provided in the handle element 11, and has formed or cut in its lower extremity a notch 20, adapted to engage the extended element 21, of the driving member 22, attached to the flexible member 23, extended through an aperture formed in the end of the handle elements 11 and 13, and in the handle cap 15, the flexible member 23 has attached at its extended extremity, a suitable connection, as a means of connecting same to an electric motor, or vany suitable primeV mover, so as to rotate the tubular member 18, the latter described elements not being shown in the accompanying drawings.
The pinion 24 is attached to the tubular member 18 and meshes with a gear 25v attached to the jack shaft 26, so as to rotate the jack shaft 26. The pinion 27, and the gear 28 are attached to thejack shaft 26, rotatively mounted in the kbearings 29 provided in the handle e-lement 11, and are adapted pending handle element 13, removably at? tobe slidably engaged by the gear 30 and thev pinion 31, respectively, attached tothe tubular member 32, slidably mounted on the shaft 33, thetubular member 32 is'provided with an inward depending member`34, afpin or the like, adapted to engage in an elongated' slot 35 formed or cut in the shaft 33, soy as tovper mit the said tubular member v32 to rotatethe shaft 33. The above described construction being such as rwill permit the shaft 33t0- be rotated at two-different speeds;`
The shaft 33'is rotatively mounted in the bearing 36 provided-in the handle element 11,` and is rotatively engaged in the'tubular mem-'- ber 18. vThe lever k37 or trigger,is positioned outside the cover 12, and is-attached to the v screwv 38, pivotally kmounted inthe cover 12,
and has attached theretov a disc v39,"pi-ovide'd with a pin 40, attached thereto, at or near its periphery, and extended therefrom, adapted to engage in anelongated aperture41,`formed or cut in the slidable memberv 42pr'ovided with an elongated aperture 43, as a means of slidably attachingthe slidable member 42, by the screw 44 to the' inside of the cover 12. The leaf vspring 4 5, is attached, at one extremity to the screw 44,l and isprovided with a' bent free extremity, adapted to hold thejslid- 'able member 42 i-n any Ydesired position. The slidable member 42.y is provided withV a fork shaped extremity 45 adapted to engage in the axial groove 46 formedv or cut in the tubular member 32. The above described. construction being such yas will permit the level 137 when pivoted to slidethe tubular member 32 .so as to' rotate the shaft 33 at two different speeds. y
rfhe bevel pinion 47 is attached to the shaft 33, and meshes with a bevel gear 48, rotatively mounted on the pin 49, attached to the case 10. The lever 50, is attached to the bevel gear 48, and has pivotally attached at its free extremity, a link member 51, pivotally attached to thelever 52, pivotally attached to the pin 53, attached -to the case 10. The movable scissor blade membor54, is pivotally attached to the pin 53, and is provided with a cutting edge 55, extended outside the case 10, and is provided with an extended element 56, located inside the case 10, having formed or out therein Va notch 57, adapted to receive the extended member 58of the lever 52. The above described construction being such as will permit the bevel gear 48 when rotated to close the movable scissor blade member 54 in shear# ing contact with the fixed scissor blade member 59, so as to cut hair, as may be desired. The fixed scissor blade member 59 is extendedioutside the case 10, and is providedwith a cutting edge 60, and is attached to the pin '53, and is provided with an extended element 61, located inside the case 10, and is attached as at 62, by a screw or the like to the case 10. The spring 63, is attached at one extremity to the extended element 61 of the fixed scissor blade member 59, and is wound around the pin 53, and is attached, at its other extremity to the extended element 56 of the movable scissor blade 'member 54, so as to open the said movable scissor blade member 54, when the bevel gear 48 is rotated, as is required when cutting hair.
- `The lever 64, or trigger, is positioned outside the lcover 12, and is attached to the screw 65,- pivotally mounted in the cover 12, and has attached thereto a pinion 66, located inside the cover 12, meshing with a pinion-67 attached to the lever68, pivotally attached to the pin 69, and provided with an extended element 70 located at its free extremity, adapted to engage in a notch 71 formed or cut in the extended element 56`of the movable scissor blade member 54, so as to limit the amountl of opening of the movable scissor blade member 54.
While I have above described the preferred form', constructionand arrangement of the several elements employed, it will be understood that the device is, nevertheless, susceptible of considerable modification therein, and
`I-therefore reserve the privilege of resorting to all such changes as may be fairly embodied within the spirit .and scope of the invention as claimed.
I-Iaving thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to protect by Iletters Patent of the United States is as follows:
1. In a power driven scissors of the class described, adapted for use by barbers, a bevel pinion attached to a shaft, said bevel' pinion meshing with a gear rotatively mounted on a pin, a lever attached to the said bevel gear, a link member pivotally attached to the free extremity of the said lever, said link member pivotally attached to a second lever pivotally attached to a pin, a movable scissor blade member pivotally attached to the said pin, said movable scissor blade member provided with a cutting edge, and provided kwith an extended element having formed therein a notch adapted to receive the extended member of the said second lever, so as to close the said movable scissor blade member in shearing contact with a fixed scissor blade member, as a means of cutting hair.
2. In a power driven scissors of the classk described, adapted for use by barbers, a fixed scissor blade member provided with a cutting edge, said fixed scissor blade member attached to a pin, and provided with an extended element, a spring attached to the said extended element and wound around they said pin, and attached to the extended element of a movable scissor blade member, so as to open the said movable scissor blade member, said spring working in co-operation with the pivoting of the said movable scissor blade member.
3. In a power driven scissors of the class described, adapted for use by barbers, a lever attached to a screwpivotally mounted in a cover, a pinion attached thereto, and meshing with a second pinion attached to a lever, plvotally attached to a pin, said lever provided with an extended element located at its free extremity, adapted to engage in Va notch formed in the extended element of a movable scissor blade member so as to limit the amount of opening of the said movable scissor blade member.
In testimony whereof I have vaflixed my signature.
CHARLES E. KELLIHER.
