Description

JULIUs oAnsAR BRADsnAw, or Moisrnn, ALABAMA.
RAILROAD CRGSSNG.
Application led September rIhis invention relates to a railroad cross-A ing and it is an improvemcnton the crossing shown in my Patent No. 989,?59 dated April 18, 1911, and it is an object ofthe present invention to provide a crossing wherein the requisite swi ching operations are rendered easier for the cars than in connection with the arrangement shown in my fo 1mer patent.
rlhe invention consists in the details of construction and in the c mbination and arrangement of the several parts of my imi proved railroadv crossing whereby certain important advantages are attained and the device rendered simpler, less expensive and otherwise more convenient and advantageous for use, will vbe hereinafter more fully set forth. l Y
rlhe novel features of my invention will hereinafter be definitely claimed. y
In order that my invention may be the better imderstcod.y l will now proceed to describe the same with reference to the accompanying drawing, wherein p v Figure l '.s a diagrammatic view illustrating a railroad crossing constructed in accordance with an embodiment of my invention; and
l? 2 is an enlarged fragmentary view illustrating diagrainmatically a portion of the crossing as embodied in Figure l.A
As disclosed in the accompanying drawing, parallel intersecting main tracks N, S, E and N are shown and in each set of tracks is provided a three throw switch 1. IThese switches control the movement ofthe cars over the tracks 2 which connect the N and S tracks with the E and WV tracks respectively, two sets of such switches being employed and extending in opposite directions from each of th main tracks,
Each of the tracks 2, as for eXample, the one leading from the E track to the S track is provided adjacent to the E track and Ato the S track with the single throw switch 3 permitting a car to travel over the track 2 from the track to the S track or over the track 4 from the E track to the N track and in a similar manner at each of the four sides of the crossing.
Assuming that there are two carsy upon the E track, oney of whichis a through car on the S track and the other is to be switched upon the west bound track on its return trip, the switch l is with respect to 1o, 1927. serial Njziavse.
the track 2 opened and such oar moves over the track 2 uponA the south bound track and continues in this direction. The second car after the first car has passed beyond the switches l and 3 is movedl over the track l; by opening the switch 3. This second car, therefore, moves upon the north bound track beyond' the switch l arranged therein. Upon requisite throw'of the switch l the car passes over the track 2 leading from the N track and upon opening the switch 3 in such track 2 the car will pass over the track Llto the west bound track, thus the car is reversed and continues upon its return trip. This operation applies to a car moving 1n any direction. y
W ith my improv-ed crossing it will then be seen that a car may be switched from any one of the main intersecting tracks onto either of 'theother main tracks running at right angles thereto, thus avoiding delay in the movement of the cars over the crossing and also permit of the switching of two or more cars at one time.
The various switches may be of any preferred construction and the tracks at the intersecting points are connected and braced in the `usual manner.
My improved crossing as herein embodied includes twenty switching tracks at the intersection ofthe main tracks of the system and these tracks may be arranged and installed with economy and permits of the handling of a large number of cars with convenience andr facility and particularly to avoid locking or congestion.
From the foregoing description it is thought to be obvious that a railroad cross-V ing constructed in accordance with my invention is particularly well adapted for use by `reason of the convenience/and facility with which it may be assembled and operated, and it will also be obvious that my invention is susceptible of some change and modication without departing from lthe principles and spirit thereof and for this reason I do not wish to A'loe understood as limiting myself to the precise arrangement and formation of thevseveral parts herein shown in carrying out my invention in practice exceptv as hereinafter claimed.
I claim v n A railroad crossing r'comprising parallel intersecting main tracks, a three throw switch located in each main track on each side of the intersecting points, a switching necting one ci each pair of first named track connecting each one of the switches switching tracks with an intersecting main 10 in each of the main tracks with a switch in track parallel t0 the inain track With Which one of the intersecting trackways, a switchthe second ci' said pair 0i switching tracks ing track connecting said first named switch connect.
With a switch in the second intersecting in testimony whereof I hereunto affix my trackWay at the opposite side of the points signature.
of intersection, and a switching track con- JULIUS CAESAR BRADSHQW.
