c. w. PETTIGREW SUPPLEMENTAL CHAIR FOR AUTOMOBILES AND THE LIKE Filed Nov. 5, 1925 Patented Get. 9, 1928.
migrate STATES CHARLES WILLIAM PETTIGREW, OF PARKERSBUBG, WEST VIRGINIA.
SUPPLEMENTAL CHAIR FOR AUTOMOBILES AND THE LIKE.;
Application filed November 3, 1925. -Serial No. 66,554.
lhis invention relates to a supplemental chair designed primarily. for use in connection with the seat of an automobile or the like whereby a child can be supported at an elevation above the seat sufficient to enable it to look out of the windows readily. The invention is. designed primarily as an improvement upon the structure disclosed in my Patent 1,581,596, Apr. 20, 1926.
It is an object of the present invention to provide a device of this character which can be held in place without forcing one of the supports between the seat and back cushions of the automobile seat or the like and which can be supported properly on seats not pro-- vided with backs.
With the foregoing and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed may be made within the scope of what is claimed without departing from the spirit of the invention. i
In the accompanying drawings the preferred form of the invention has been shown.
In said drawings: Figure 1 is a front elevation of the chair. Figure 2 is a section on line 22 Figure 1 of an automobile seat with which the chair is associated, being indicated by broken lines.
Referring to the figures by characters of reference 1 designates the seat frame of the suppl mental chair, the same being sup-- ported at the back by legs 2. The lower portions of these legs are extended forwardly to provide feet 3 the forward ends of which are connected by a cross rod 4. Extensions 5 are provided on the legs and project above the seat frame 1, these extensions being con- \l their upper ends by a cross rod 6. is to be understood that the legs 2, extensions 5, rod 6, seats 3 and the rod 4: can all be formed in a single length of metal. Extended forwardly from the extensions 5 are the arms 7 of the chair which extend downwardly as at 8 and merge into the front legs 9 connected to the front portion of the frame 1. These legs 9 are provided at their lower ends with feet 10 projecting forwardly thereextended rearwardly. These arms are connected by cross rods 13. Frame 1 can be used to support-a seat cushion 14 and,'if de-' sired, a back cushion can be carried by the extension 5 and the cross rod 6. Under some conditions the extensions 5 and the back cushions 15 can be eliminated.
In Figure 2 of the drawing the seat cushion of an automobile seat or-the like has been indicated at S while the back cushion has been indicated at B. The supplemental chair constituting the present invention is adapted to be supported on the cushion S by the feet 3 and 10 and it is held assembled with the cushion by inserting the arms 12 beneath the front portion of the cushion with the extensions 11 extended downwardly infront of and close to the cushion. As the feet 3 and the rods 4 rest on the rear portions of the cushion S the chair will be properly supported and it becomes unnecessary to force any portion thereof between the back cushion B and the seat cushion S. The operation of placing the chair in position is readily effected inasmuch as it merely becomes necessary to. lift the front portion of the cushion S, place in engagement therewith the hookshaped portions formed of the arms 12, ex-
cushion S with the chair against the back cushion B.
What is claimed is:
The combination witha vehicle seat in cluding a seat cushion and a back, of a supplemental chair bearing against the back and including front and back legs, a seat supported thereby remote from the cushion, forwardly extending feet uponthe legs for hearing on the front and back portions of the cushion, and means carried by the feet ofthe front leg and cooperating therewith to constitute hooks for straddling the front portion of the seat cushion, all'of the feet constituting means for thrusting the cushion downwardly onto the lower portions of the hooks, and transverse rods connecting the rear feet and the lower portions of the front hooks respectively.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as V own, I have hereto aflixed my signature.
