  • This invention relates to new and useful improvements in compressors, particularly compressors adapted for use with refrigerating systems for domestic purposes wherein a comparatively small compressor unit is required but which has to be compact in size and efficient in operation due to the fact that it is generally automatically controlled and in the hands of inexperienced persons who are not able or inclined to make adjustments or repairs of the machine or pay much attention thereto. Further, such a machine being located in a dwelling, it is desirable to provide a quiet-running machine which is also properly sealed in order to prevent the escape of refrigerant into the rooms.

Application led December This invention relates to new and useful improvements in compressors, particularly compressors adapted for use with refrigerating systems for domestic purposes wherein a comparatively small compressor unit is required but which has to be compact in size and efficient in operation due to the fact that it is generally automatically controlled and in the hands of inexperienced persons who are not able or inclined to make adjustments or repairs of the machine or pay much attention thereto. Further, such a machine being located in a dwelling, it is desirable to provide a quiet-running machine which is also properly sealed in order to prevent the escape of refrigerant into the rooms.
The objects ofthe invention are to provide a compressor which requires comparatively little power to operate, in which all the operating parts are enclosed in a suitable housing, and which is properly balanced, so as to minimize the vibration and insure quiet operation of the machine.
Further objects of the invention are to provide novel driving mechanism which is noiseless in operation, exerts a uniform driving torque in the operating parts of the compressor so as to eliminate knocks or vibration, and which is particularly adapted for use with compressors of the type herein disclosed and which is so constructed that danger of said driving mechanism getting out of order is reduced to minimum.
Still further objects of the invention are to provide a suitable multiple fly wheel adapted to progressively cut in the additional section or sections of the fly wheel at the appropriate moment,v and to provide an automatic seal for the shaft, which seal is operable or controlled by said fly Wheel so as to increase the pressure to which the seal elements are subjected when the compressor is stationary or the pressure thereof is above normal, and to reduce the pressure applied to said seal elements to the normal operating pressure when said compressor is in operation and the pressure thereof is normal.
Additional objects of the invention are to generally improve upon and simplify the construction ofthe compressor and of the mechanisms associated therewith, and to provide a self-contained unit which is so constructed as to make it suitable for use in the rooms of a dwelling as well as in the basement.

With these and other objects inview, my invention consists in certain novel features of construction and arrangement of parts, hereinafter more fully describedand claimed, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l is a vertical cross sectionv taken longitudinally through the machine.

The compressor disclosed in the present application is particularly designed for use 1n connection with domestic refrigerating systems and is of the t pe disclosed in my copending application led July 20, 1925, Serial Number 44,783. i
In the present invention, the compressor is actuated by a suitable prime mover through a chain drive which is positive in its action and noiseless in operation. A multiple fly Wheel consisting of a driving section and a driven section is interposed in the driving connections and permits the provision of a fly wheel of proper weight without placing the motor under excessive load during the Astarting operation. Furthermore, this multiple fly wheel insures proper'opcrative intel-engagement of the motor with the compressor at the proper speed. The construction of the multiple Hy wheel is disclosed in my copcnding application filed October 30, 1924, Serial'Number 764,776. In the present construction, however, I combine the multiple fly wheel with a seal of the type disclosed in a copending application filed May 25, 1925, Serial Number 32,675, whereby the centrifugally operated segmental weights of the fly wheel are utilized to actuatc the pressure elements of the seal in definite relation with the pressure prevailing in the compressor. By combining the seal with the fly ias wheel, I am enabled to reduce the dimensions of the machine and eliminate a number of parts as well as provide a more substantial structure.
Referring by numerals to the accompanying drawings, indicates a base to which is fixed a casing 11 which is used for enclosing the chain drive 12 and the multiple fly wheel 14. A cylindrical housing 15 extends` horizontally from casing 11 and is secured thereto by means of bolts or other attaching devices 16 which pass through the vertical Wall of casing 11 and through flanges or lugs 15al of housing 15. The outer end of housing 15 is closed by an end plate 17 which is secured in position, preferably by welding as indicated at 18, and supported by said end plate is a ball bearing 19 in which is journaled one end of a shaft 20. The latter extends horizontally through housing 15 and projects into casing 11 being journaled in bearing 21 supported in the inncrvend Wall 17a by a sleeve 22 which is flanged at one end to engage said vertical wall 17a and is lthreaded at its opposite end for receiving an internally threaded ring 24 which is disposed within housing 15. By securing said ring on to the sleeve 22, said sleeve and bearing 21 are fixed in position in the vertical wall 17a.
The reduced end 2Oa of shaft 20 project-s through sleeve 22 into casing 11 and has fixed thereon the driven fly wheel section 25 of the multiple lfly wheel 14. Reduced end 2()a is preferably tapered and member 25 is secured thereon by means of a collar 26 which is screw-seated on the threaded extremity of portion 2Oa and draws said member 25 on said tapered shaft portion. Member' 25 is provided with hub portion 25a which accommodates threaded collar 26 and carries a ball bearing 27 in which is journaled one end of an intermediate shaft 28 which is coaxially aligned with shaft 2O and extends outwardly through an end plate 1lu of casing 11. This end plate is provided with an enlarged boss 11h in which is arranged a ball bearing 2f) for receiving intcrn'lcdiate shaft The upper outer end of intermediate Shaft 28 is connected to tbe motor shaft or other drivingr element by a coupling 31.
A small sprocket wheel 32 is fixed to intermediate shai't 28 and operating over said wheel 32 is a chain 34 which also-operates over a comparatively large sprocket wheel 35, the latter being mounted on a sleeve 36 which is mounted in casing 11 in spaced relation with shafts and Driven fly wheel member has a Ytubular extension 25" on which is loosely mounted a driving fly wheel member 37. The latter carries segmental members 38 which are mounted thereon for radial movement by means of slotand pin connections 39 and are provided with outwardly presented peripheral faces 38a which are preferably lined with brake lining or other suitable material 40. Members 38 are normally held in retracted or inward positions by springs 41 and are adapted to move by centrifugal action outwardly to bring lining 40 in engagement with the inner face of circumferentlal flange 25c which extends laterally from driven member 25, thereby effecting driving engagement between driving member 37 and driven member 25. Driving member 37 is actuated by a chain A42 which operates over a small sprocket wheel 44 arranged on sleeve 36 and driven by large sprocket wheel 35 which operates a large sprocket wheel 45 `which is fixed to one end of driving member 37. Ij`hus the drive is transmitted from motor shaft to intermediate shaft 28 and sprocket wheel 32 and operates chain 34. This chain operates large sprocket wheel and through sprocket wheel 44 and chain 42 motion is transmitted to spocket wheel 45 fixed to driving member 3 The speed of the motor shaft is stepped down by the relative or reduced sizes of sprocket wheels used in the chain drive so that the driving fly wheel member 37 is operated at the proper speed. Blocks 38 are interlocked and held against expansion by weighted hooks 46 which are pivotally mounted on the respective blocks at 47 and engage lugs 48 formed on the opposite segmental blocks as disclosed in my copending application filed September 18, 1925, Serial Number 57,138. Thus'the segmental blocks 38 are prevented from moving into interengaging position until the driving member 37 attains proper speed, whereupon the weights 46 are actuated and release segmental blocks 38.
In the present form, segmental blocks 38 are provided at their inner ends with laterally disposed flanges 38b terminating in beveled edges 49 which are 5adapted to engage the beveled peripheral face 50 of a washer 51,' the latter being interposed between driving member 37 and driven member 25 and bearing against the latter. When segmental blocks 38 move into retracted position, the beveled edges 49 bear against the beveled face of washer 51, thereby placing the members of the fly wheel under pressure exerted in axial direction.

Member 25, being fixed on shaft 20, this When member 37 is operated under usual speed, segmental blocks occupy moved positions, thereby removing the pressure against side member 37 and preventing excessive friction between hub portion 37a and member 22 and washer 52. A light coiled spring 54 is interposed between member 37 and member 25 and serves to maintain proper sealing contact between washer 52 and the adjacent parts during the operation of the machine. A series of eccentrics 55 are arranged on shaft 20 and are clamped in position thereon in proper spaced relation by means of spacing sleeves 56 arranged between said eccentrics and a tubular member 57 which occupies a position between one of the eccentrics and ring 24 and has a convex face 58 for engaging concave face 59 of a washer 60, the latter being interposed between tubular member 57 and ring 24 and adapted to form a sealing contact therewith. The eccentrics and spacing sleeves are secured in position on shaft 20 by a member 61 which is screw-seated on the threaded portion of said shaft 20. The washer 60 forms additional seal for the shaft and is adapted to be placed under increased pressure when the machine is stationary by virtue of the fact that when segniental blocks 38 occupy retracted position and bear against washer 51 the thrust exerted against member 25 is transmitted to shaft 20 which in turn causes member 57 to exert pressure against washer 60 and brings the latter under increased pressure against ring 24. In this manner, a dual seal is provided for the shaft on each side of bearing 21 and this seal is adapted to be placed under increased pressure when the machine is stationary, thereby placing the seal members under increased sealing pressure at the time when fiuid pressure in the compressor is increased above normal.
When the machine is in operation, the pressure in the compressor is brought down to normal and consequently it is not necessary to maintain the seal members under increased pressure. Therefore, when members 88 are actuated to move in expanded positions, the relative pressure exerted against ily wheel members 37 and 25 is removed so that the washers 52 and 6() are subjected to normal operating pressure only, thereby preventing excessive friction and loss of power. Washers 52 and 60 are made of special metal alloy, designed especially for this purpose, and are preferably reinforced on their peripheral faces by steel rings 60.
Eccentrics 55 have loosely mounted thereon rings 62 which operate in frames 64. These frames have elongated flanged openings 65 which are in engagement with rollers 66 loosely arranged on spacing sleeves 56 and forni guides for said frames. Fixed to each frame 64 by bolts 67 is a hollow piston 68 which operates in a cylinder 69. Each cylinder 69 has its lower end screw-seated in the threaded opening forme-d in housing 15 and its upper end screw-seated in a horizontally disposed wall 70 of a cylinder housing 71, the latter being fixed to casing 15. There are three cylinders 69 arranged in housing 7l and each cylinder communicates with a chamber 72 which is common to all of said cylinders by means of orifices 74 formed in the wall of said cylinder at a height immediately above the piston when thelatter occupies its lowermost position. Each cylinder 69 has its upper end opening into a high pressure chamber 75 formed in a cylinder head 76 which latter rests on and is secured to top wall 70 of casing 71. The upper end of each cylinder is adapted to be closed by a disk valve 77 which is preferably formed of non-lnetallic material and is movable in vertical plane to open the upper end of said cylinder and allow passage of fluid therefrom into the high pressure chamber 75. Each disk valve 77 is provided with a stem 78 which is movably mounted in a downwardly presented boss or tubular extension 79 thereby forming a guide for the respective disk valve. Each dlsk valve is preferably operated by gravlty to close the cylinder during the intake stroke of the piston.
Each piston is provided with piston rings 80 and has a removable head 81 which is held in position by a screw 82, the lower end of the latter being screw-seated in the lower end of piston 68. Each frame 64 is provided at diametrically opposite points with wearing plates 84 against which the eccentric rings 55 operate. The faces of these plates are preferably inclined from horizontal in a direction toward the line of travel of the eccentric shown in Figure 4. Leading from high pressure chamber 75 is a high pressure discharge connection 85 by means of which the compressed Huid is conveyed away and leading to casing 71 is a return connection 86 through which the fluid is returned to chamber 72 to be re-admitted into the cylinders. The bottom wall of chamber 72 is provided with vertically disposed bores 87 which open into the casing 15 to permit oil accumulated in chamber 72 to be drained into said casing. In this manner chamber 72 acts as an oil sump for separating the oil from the refrigerant and preventing the recirculation thereof through the refrigerating system.
Sleeve 36 which carries sprocket wheels 84 and 44 is mounted on tubular bearings 74 which are threaded on a shouldered counter shaft 75. This shaft, which is arranged in extension 76 of casing 11 is held in position by sleeves 77 which are screw-seated in the vertical walls of extension 76 and the ends of said shaft are threaded asat 75 and receive rivets 78 by means of which said shaft is held against displacement.
Extension 76 is preferably formed separate from the casing to facilitate assembly of the parts My improved compressor has all the operating parts enclosed and the shaft opening is scaled to prevent leakage. The chain drive renders the compressor practically noiseless and permits operation of the compressor in an efficient manner at the most desirable speed. 'l'he sealing elements are under the desired pressure during the operation of the compressor and are automatically subjected to increased pressure when the compressor is staY tionary to take care of the increase of pres sure in the compressor produced by the stoppage of circulation of the compressible fluid.

Ll. ln a compressor, the combination of a sealed casing, compressing means operating therein and including an operating shaft projecting from said casing, a driven fly wheel scctionlixed to the projecting portion of said shaft, a driving fly wheel section loosely mounted relative to said shaft, eentrifugally controlled means for interlocking said fly wheel sections to effect the operation of said comp sing means, and being operable when not allected by centrifugal action to exert Laxial pressures in opposite directions against said fly wheel sections, and cooperating seal members on said shaft cooperating With the adjacent contacting surfaces on each side of the shaft opening of said casing and adapted when said lly wheel sections are disengaged to be subjected through the medium of said fly wheel sections to increased axial pressure in opposite directions so as to form a fluidtight contact between said seal elements and the adjacent surfaces when said compressor is inoperative.
F. lua compressor, the combination with a sealed casing and compressing means arranged therein, of an actuating shaft for said compressing means having one end projecting through the wall of said casing, a series of eeccntrics loosely arranged on said shaft for actuating said compressing means, a series olsleeves interposed between said eccentrics, means threaded on one end of said shaft for clamping said eccentrics between said sleeves and securing them in proper spaced relation with cach other, a driven fly wheel section fixed on the projecting end of said shaft, a driving ily wheel section loosely mounted relative to said shaft, said sections being of substantially the same diameter and complementary to each other to provide the necessary fly wheel mass, centrifugally controlled means for interlocking said fly Wheel sections together at a predetermined speed and setting said compressing means in operation, seal rings loosely arranged on said shaft on each side of the shaft opening of said casing, and seal collars arranged adjacent to one side of each seal ring and adapted to be subjected through the medium of said fly Wheel sections to pressures in opposite aXial directions to bring said seal rings in fluid-tight contact with the contacting surfaces.
6. ln a compressor, the combination with a sealed lusing, compressing means arranged therein, and an operating shaft for said compressing means journaled in said casing and having one end projecting therefrom, of a driven section fixed to the projecting end of said shaft and a driving section loosely mounted relative to said shaft, said sections being adapted to be subjected to axial pressures in opposite directions, centrifugally controlled means carried by said driving section and adapted to operatively engage said driven section to effect operation of said compressing means, saidIcentril'ugally controlled means being adapted when in retracted position to apply to said sections pressure in axially opposed directions, a collar fixed on said shaft, a seal ring loosely arranged on said shaft between said collar and the wall of said casing, said shaft being adapted to be placed through the medium of said sections under axial pressure to bring said fixed member in increased pressure contact with said seal ring and establish a Huid-tight contact between said seal ring and the adjacent surfaces.

In a compressor, the combination with a sealed casing, compressing means arranged therein and an operating shaft for said compressing means journaled in said casing and having one end projecting therefrom, of a driven fly wheel section fixed to said shaft and a driving fly wheel section loosely mounted on the hub of said driven section, centrifugally controlled means carried by said driving section and adapted to operatively engage said driven section to effect operation of said compressing means, said centrifugally controlled means being adapted to exert pressure against said fly wheel sections in axially opposed directions, a member fixed on said shaft on one side of said casing wall and spaced therefrom, a seal ring interposed between said member and the inner face of said casing wall, and spring means interposed between said fly wheel sections for causing the seal ring to be held in` pressure Contact with the adjacent surfaces when said centrifugally controlled means occupy expanded positions, said centrifugally controlled means being adapted when occupying retracted positions to subject said fly wheel sections to pressures in axially opposed directions to increase the sealing pressure between said seal ring and the adjacent surfaces when the compressor is stationary.
8. In a compressor, the combination with a sealed casing, compressing means arranged therein including an operating shaft therefor having one end projecting outwardly from said casing, a bearin in said casing for the projecting end of said shaft, a multiple fly wheel comprising a driven section fixed to said shaft and a driving section loosely mounted relative to said shaft, centrifugally controlled means carried by said driving section and adapted to engage said driven section to interlock said fly wheel sections, a collar fixed to said shaft and spaced from the inner face of said shaft bearing, a collar fixed to said driving section and spaced from the outer face of said shaft bearing, a seal ring of suitable material interposed between and in sealing contact with each collar and the respective face of said shaft bearing, and means cooperating with said centrifugally controlled means for placing said fiy wheel sections under pressure in opposite directions when said sections are disengaged from each other, thereby causing said collars to exert pressure against said seal rings and insure Huid-tight contact between said seal rings and the adjoining surfaces.
9. In a compressor, the combination of a casing, a bearing in said casing, a shaft journaled in said bearing, compressing mechanism in said casing and operable by said shaft, a multiple fly wheel arranged on said shaft to one side of said bearing and comprising a driven and a driving section, said driven section being fixed onlsaid shaft and said driving section being loosely mounted relative to said shaft, centrifugally operable means carried by said driving section adapted to operatively engage said driven section for actuating said shaft, a collar fixed on said shaft on the opposite side of said bearing, a seal ring loosely arranged on said shaft and interposed between said ixed member and one side of said bearing, and a washer cooperating with said fixed fly wheel section and engageable by said centrifugal means when the latter occupies retracted position whereby said shaft is adapted to be subjected to pressure in axial direction to increase the sealing contact between said seal ring and the adjoining surfaces when said shaft is stationary.

In a compressor, a easing, compressing means arranged in said casing including an operating shaft therefor, said shaft having one end projecting through said casing, a driven fly wheel section fixed to said shaft, a driving fly wheel section loosely mounted relative to said shaft, centrifugally controlled means carried by said driving section and adapted to operatively engage said driven section and actuate said shaft when said driving section reaches a predetermined speed, a bearing in said casing for the projecting end of said shaft, a member fixed on said shaft to one side of said bearing, seal rings loosely arranged on said shaft and interposed between said fixed member and one side of said bearing and said fly wheel driving section and the other side of said bearing, a collar loosely carried by said fly wheel driven section and adapted to be engaged by said centrifugally controlled means when the latter occupies retracted positions to subject said fly wheel sections to opposed axial pressures whereby said seal rings are subjected to increased sealing pressure when said fly wheel sections are disengaged from each other and said compressing means are stationary.

In a compressor, the combination with a casing and compressing means arranged therein including an actuating shaft therefor, and projecting from said casing, of a driven fly Wheel section fixed to said shaft, a driving fly wheel section loosely mounted relative to said shaft, centrifugally controlled means for interlocking said fly Wheel sections at predetermined speed, a bearing for said shaft arranged in the wall of said casing, a ring loosely arranged on said shaft adjacent to each side of said bearing in contact therewith, a collar fixed to said shaft and contacting with one of said rings, a collar fixed to said driving fly Wheel section and contacting with the other ring, and means cooperating with said centrifugally controlled means and said collars for placing the latter against said rings under increased pressure when said shaft is stationary, thereby increasing the sealing contact between said rings and the adjacent surfaces.

In a compressor, the combination with a casing and compressing means arranged therein and including an actuating shaft proj ecting from said casing` of a driven fly Wheel section fixed to said shaft, a driving fly Wheel section loosely mounted relative to said shaft, centrifugally controlled means for interlocking said fly Wheel sections at a predetermined speed, a bearing for said shaft arranged in the Wall of said casing, a ring loosely arranged on said shaft adjacent to each side of said bearing and in contact therewith, a collar fixed to said shaft and contacting With one of said rings, a collar fixed to said driving fly Wheel section and contacting with the other ring, a coiled spring interposed between said fly Wheel sections to hold said seal rings against the adjacent surfaces under normal pressure during the operation of said compressor, and means cooperating with said centrifugally controlled means and said collars for increasing the pressure between said rings and the adjacent surfaces When said compressor is in active.
13. In a compressor, the combination of a compressor housing, a compressing mechanism arranged therein, an actuating shaft for said compressing mechanism having one end projecting outwardly from said housing, an intermediate driving shaft journaled exteriorly of said compressor housing and coaxially With said main shaft, and a chain drive including a sprocket Wheel fixed to said intermediate shaft, a pair of conjoined sprocket Wheels journaled exteriorly of said compressor housing and spaced from said shafts, and a sprocket Wheel coaxially and loosely disposed relative to said main shaft and adapted to be operatively connected thereto, and chains for interengaging the respective sprocket Wheels.

In a compressor, the combination of a casing for the driving mechanism, a compressor housing extending laterally therefrom, an end plate supported by said casing and removably secured to said housing, a shaft bearing in said plate, a compressor shaft in said housing and extending through said bearing into said casing coaxially with said main shaft, an intermediate shaft journaled in said casing and extending therefrom for receiving suitable driving connections, a sectional fly Wheel carried by said main shaft in said casing, one of said sections being fixed to said shaft and the other being loosely mounted relative thereto, a counter shaft arranged in said casing parallel with and spaced from the first mentioned shafts, a sprocket Wheel fixed to said intermediate shaft, a pair of conjoined sprocket- Wheels operatively mounted on said counter shaft, a chain interengaging the sprocket Wheel of the intermediate shaft With one of the sprocket Wheels of said counter shaft, a sprocket Wheel fixed to said loosely mounted fly Wheel section, a chain operatively interengaging the other sprocket Wheel of said counter shaft and the sprocket wheel of said loosely mounted fly wheel section, thereby driving the latter, a seal device for said shaft bearing cooperating with said shaft and said fly Wheel sections, and a centrifugally operable means for interengaging said fly Wheel sections and adapted when in retracted positions to exert axial pressure through said fly Wheel sections against said seal device to increase the sealing pressure thereof When said compressor is inactive, said fly wheel sections being adapted to be interengaged when said chain driven fly* Wheel section reaches a predetermined speed, thereby insuring the operation of the main shaft only after the driving mechanism has reached the predetermined speed.

In a compressor, the combination of a casing for the driving mechanism, a compressor' housing, an end plate supported by said casing and removably secured to said housing for supporting the latter in laterally extended position relative to said casing, a shaft bearing in said plate, a compressor shaft in said housing and extending through said bearing into said casing coaxially with said compressor shaft, an intermediate shaft journaled in said casing and extending from said casing for receiving suitable driving connections, a sectional fly Wheel carried by said main shaft in said casing, one of said sections being fixed to said shaft and the other being loosely mounted relative thereto, a counter shaft arranged in said casing parallel with and spaced from the first mentioned shafts, a sprocket wheel fixed to said intermediate shaft, a pair of conjoined sprocket Wheels operatively mounted on said counter shaft, a chain interengaging the sprocket Wheel of the intermediate shaft, with one of the sprocket Wheels of said counter shaft, a sprocket Wheel fixed to said loosely mounted fly Wheel section, a chain operatively interengaging the other sprocket wheel of said counter shaft and the sprocket wheel of said loosely mounted Hy wheel section thereby driving the latter, and centrifugally controlled means carried by said chain driven fly wheel section for operatively interengaging said Hy wheel sections when said chain driven Hy wheel section reaches a predetermined speed.

In a compressor, a casing for the driving mechanism, a compressor housing extending laterally therefrom, an end plate supported by said casing and removably secured to said housing, a shaft b'earing in said plate, a compressor shaft in said housing and extending through said bearing into said casing, an intermediate shaft journaled in said casing and extending therefrom for receiving suitable driving connections, a sectional Hy wheel carried by said main shaft in said casing, one of said sections being fixed to said shaft and the other being loosely mounted relative thereto, a counter shaft arranged in said casing parallel with and spaced from the first mentioned shafts, a sprocket wheel vfixed to said intermediate shaft, a pair of conjoined sprocket wheels operatively mounted on said counter shaft, a chain interengaging the sprocket wheel of the intermediate shaft, with one of the sprocket wheels of said counter shaft, a sprocket wheel fixed to said loosely mounted fly wheel section, a chain operatively interengaging the other sprocket wheel of said counter shaft and the sprocket wheel of said loosely mounted Hy wheel section thereby driving the latter, centrifugally controlled means carried by said chain driven Hy wheel section for operatively interengaging said Hy Wheel sections when said chain driven fly wheel section reaches a predetermined speed, and a seal for said' main shaft, said seal fincluding members disposed on each side of said bearing and being adapted to operate under normal sealin'g pressure during the actuation of said main shaftY and being adapted to be placed under increased sealing pressure when said main shaft is stationary.
17. ln a compressor, a casing for the driving mechanism, a compressor' housing extending laterally `therefrom, anv end plate supported by said casing and removably secured to said housing, a shaft bearing in said plate, a compressor shaft in said housing and extending through said bearing i'nto said casing, an intermediate shaft journaled in said casing and extending therefrom for receiving suitable driving connections, a sectional Hy Wheel carried by saidI main shaft in said casing, one of said sections being fixed to said shaft and the other being loosely mounted relative thereto, a counter shaft arranged in said casing parallel with and spaced from the first mentioned shafts, a sprocket wheel fixed to said intermediate shaft, a pair of conjoined sprocket wheels operatively mounted on said counter shaft, a chain interengaging the sprocket wheel of the intermediate shaft with one of the sprocket wheels of said counter shaft, a sprocket wheel fixed to said loosely mounted Hy wheel section, a chain operatively interengaging the other sprocket wheel of said counter shaft and the sprocket wheel of said loosely mounted fly wheel section, thereby driving the latter, and centrifugally controlled means carried by said chain driven Hy wheel section for interengaging said Hy wheel sections'to effect actuation of said main shaft.

In a compressor, the combination with the compressing means including a shaft therefor, of a compressor housing, a shaft bearing in one wall of said housing, an intermediate shaft, a sectional Hy wheel carried by said main shaft, one of said sections being fixed to said main shaft and the other being loosely mounted relative thereto, a counter shaft spaced from the first mentioned shafts, a sprocket wheel fixed to said intermediate shaft, a pair of conjoined sprocket wheels mounted on said counter shaft, and a sprocket wheel fixed to said loose Hy wheel section, chains for interengaging the respective sprocket wheels, a ring loosely arranged on said main shaft adjacent to each side of said bearing and in Contact therewith, a collar fixed to said main shaft and contacting with one of said rings, a collar fixed to said bearing or loose Hy wheel section and contacting with the other ring, a Washer loosely arranged on said fixed Hy wheel section, and segmental blocks movably carried by said driving Hy wheel section and operable by centrifugal action to effect interengagement of said Hy wheel sections, said -blocks having annular cam faces adapted to engage said washer when said blocks are in retracted or inoperative position, thereby exerting pressure against said sections in opposite directions and increasing the seallll) lng pressure between said rings and the adjacent surfaces.

In a compressor, the combination with the compressing means including a shaft therefor, of a compressor` housing, a shaft bearing inone Wall of said housing, an intermediate shaft, a sectional fly wheel carried by said main shaft, one of said sections being fixed to said main shaft and the other being loosely mountedo relative thereto, a counter shaft spaced from the first mentioned shafts, a sprocket wheel fixed to said intermediate shaft, a pair of conjoined sprocket wheels mounted on'said counter shaft, a sprocket wheel fixed to said loose fly wheelsection, chains for interengaging the respective sprocket wheels, a ring looselyvarranged on said main shaft adjacent to each side of said bearing and in contact therewith, a collar fixed to said main shaft and contacting with one of said rings, a collar fixed to said bearing or loose fiy wheel sec-tion and contacting with the other ring, a washer loosely arranged on said fixed fly Wheel section, segmental blocks movably carried by said driving fly wheel section and operable by centrifugal action to effect interengagement ofsaid fiy Wheel sections, said blocks having annular cam faces adapted to engage said washer when said blocks are inl retracted or inoper# ative position, thereby exerting pressure against said sections in opposite directions and increasing the sealing pressure between said rings and the adjacent surfaces, and' chains for Lesasoa means for locking said segmental blocks in 21. In a compressor, the combination with; `the compressing means including a shaft therefor, of a compressor housing, a shaft bearing in o'ne wall of said housing, an intermediate shaft, a sectional fly wheel carried by said main shaft, one of said sectionsbcing fixed to said main shaft and the other being loosely mounted relative thereto, a counter shaft spaced from the first mentioned shafts, a sprocket wheel .fixed to said intermediate shaft, a pair of conjoined sprocket wheels mounted on said counter shaft, a sprocket wheel fixed to said loose fly wheel section, interengaging the respective sprocket- Wheels, a ring looselyarranged on said main shaft adjacent to each side of said bearing and in contact therewith, a collar fixed to said main shaft and contacting with one of said rings, a collar fixed to said bearing or loose fiy wheel section and contacting with the other ring, a washer loosely arranged on said fixed fiy wheel section, segmental blocks movably carried by said driving fly wheel section and operable by centrifugal action to effect interengagement of said fly wheel sections, said blocks having annular cam faces adapted to engage said washer when said blocks are in retracted vor inoperative position, thereby exerting pressure against said sections in opposite directions and increasing the sealing pressure between said rings and the adjacent surfaces, means for locking said segmental blocks in retracted or inoperative positions, said means being operable by centrifugal action to release said blocks and permit them to move into fly wheel section interengaging positions, and a sealed casing for enclosing said chain drive and said fly wheel sections, said casing being provided with albearing through which said intermediate shaft extends outwardly.
