Application ledv February i' 5 for use upon motor cars. yIt is ot' t'hetype in which the'l instrument board fittings, such v as gauges, switches,.choke red, and the like,
are first assembled upon afplate or 4panel which is-then' -secured to the instrumentA board. For cheapness andy simplicity I have used stock parts, such as bolts and nuts, for securing the fittings on the panel, and also for securing the panel onthe instrument board. AsV the bolts preferably pierce the panel they present an unsightly appearance.
r instruments and the exposed portion of the panel thus permitting a wide range ot'` decorative effect. The entire design is preferably such that most of lthe parts may be stamped out of sheet metal. y
In the drawings:
Figure 1 is a rear elevation of my instrument board assembly vFigure 2 is a section on line 2-2 of Figure 1. Figure 3 is a front elevation of one portion ofthe instrument vboard indicating the character of the effect secured by the present construction.
Figure 4 is a section on line 4-4 of Figure 1 showing the arrangement for securing the face plate to the panel.
Figure 5 is a detail View showing the parts in process of assembly.
The reference character 2 indicates an in` i is provided with a flange 6 overlying the outer face of the board around the opening. The panel is secured to the boai'd by means oi bolts 8 having their headsV counter-sunk in the :tace of the panel, these bolts being pro-y vided with nuts 10 cooperating with clamps indicated at 12 whichengage` the rearV face 19, 1926. Serial No. 89,368.
of the instrument board and the rear 'face' of the panely or of the flange of one of theinstrumen't board fittings as shown at therighty of Figure 2. Eolts :14, which also havethei'r heads counter-sunk in the face of the panel, are provided with nuts 16 forfcooperating with clamps indicated at 18 whichl serve tov 'secure the various instrumentboard fittings suoli asy speedometer .20, gauges 22, and switch 24 to the panel. With the construction so far described it is apparent ythat the heads of the bolts14 and 8 are exposed on the front of the instrument board. I have ac! cordingly provided face plate 30 which overlies the panel, conceals the heads of the bolts, .and is apertured for the display of thefit-V tings. rIhis plate is flanged at its edges as` indicated at 32. The flanges which surround the fittings extending into the aperturesl f formed in the panel'as clearly shown in Figure 2, thus centeringl the plate and holding it aga'inst'rattling. .'Ihe plate 30 ispiovided with tongues Sowhich are kpassed throughl openings formed in the panel 4 as shownin *t Figure 4 and are thereupon bent over to hold the parts together. f
,The face plate 30 isl also utilized forthe mounting of fitting 40 in-which choke rod 26 is slidably mounted, the other end of` the rod being guided in an opening 42`provided in one of the clamping plates 18. `v
' It will be noted that the-centrally` located I bolts 14 are each utilized for the mounting otv the ends of two different'clamping plates, p
It is apparent that my construction is simple and that all of the Vparts with the exception of the bolts and nuts,.which` arev ot stock sizes, are formed of sheet metal stainpings.y Y
VThe face plate and the various fittings may be assembled on the panel on the benclnthe com- Apleted assembly then being secured upon the instrument board.' ,The face plate may be* givenany desired finish to harmonize or contrast with the finish lof adjacent parts. The
instruments are readily accessible for repair Y and the whole assembly may be removed with ease.
I claim: 1. The combination-of an instrument board having anV opening therein, a plate provided said opening, and with a portionV adapted to A l' adaptedto conceal the fastening devices, saidV face plate being insel-table from the front of the instrument board. y Y
2. InV the combination as defined' in claim Y Landafittinv mounted on said face, plete.
