application tilled April 1%, limit. Serial No. $69,454.
The present invention relates to handsaws, and aims to provide a simple, inexpensive, and convenient attachment for a handsaw in order that the saw may also be conveniently used as With the foregoing and other objects in view, which will be apparent as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the construction and arrangement of parts as hereinto after described and claimed, it being understood ,that changes can be made within the scope of what is claimed without departing from the spirit of the invention.
The invention is illustrated in the accomit panying drawing, wherein- Fig. 1 is a side elevation of a saw with the square attachment applied,
Fig. 2 is a sect-ion on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1, and
Fig. 3 is a perspective View of the attachment.
The handsaw illustrated is of the conventional type, and has a saw blade 7 with a" wooden or other suitable handle 8 at one end,
i the handle having a kerii 9 in which the blade is secured by means of screws, bolts, or other securing elements 10.
The attachment is bent from a sin le sheet of suitable metal. The plate is doub ed upon 3 itself to provide the opposite wings or side portions 11 with the bend 12 between them, and the side portions 11 are provided with apertures 13 corresponding with the securing elements 10 of the saw for which the attachment isintended. -Various sizes and forms of attachments may be provided for difl'erent saws. 1
The side portions 11 are provided with out standing flanges 14L arranged at right angles 4 with the bend 12.
attachment therein, and the attachment is placed astride the inner end portion of the blade 7, with the bend seating on the upper edge of the blade. The handle 8 is slipped over the attachment, and the securing elements 10 are inserted through the apertures of the handle, attachment, and blade, thereby securely fastening the parts together.
The flanges 14: are arranged at right angles with the upper edge of the blade, and may therefore rest against one surface of an object, with the upper edge of the blade arranged at right angles to the corner or edge between the two surfaces. The saw may thus be convenientlyused as a square for squaring off lumber and other objects.
The device may be cheaply manufactured, and can also be quickly installed, without drilling additional holes in the saw blade or handle, it being necessary only to increase the width of the kerf 9 of the handle to the aggregate thicknesses of the blade and side portions 11.
* Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is The combination with a saw comprising a handle having a keri't', a blade having one end portion in said kerf, and securing elements extending through said handle and blade, of an attachment comprising a doubled plate fitting astride said blade with its bend seating on the upper edge of the blade, the plate having side annaa'r anoint nnrtson.
