PATENT OFFICE.
AUREL VASZIN, OF DAYTON,
0310, ASSIGNOR TO THE DAYTON runnousn & RIDING DEVICE MFG. COMPANY, OF DAYTON, OHIO, A CORPORATION OF OHIO.
AMUSEMENT DEVICE.
Application filed February 11, 1927. Serial No. 167,555.
My invention relates to amusement apparatus.
It is the object of my invention to provide means for making it difficult for an amusement car traveling erratically with an erratic steering gear on an amusement platform to enter an exit passageway from the platform to another part of an amusement park.
In particular, my invention consists of the placing flush with the floor of two relatively small rotating platforms rotating in opposite directions and in a direction opposite to that in which the car must go in order to enter into the passageway.
It is my object to locate these widely spaced, oppositely rotating platforms adjacent the mouth or entrance of the exit passageway wide enough apart for a car to enter if accurately guided, but close enough so that unless the car is guided with extreme accuracy, it will be engaged by one of the small rotating platforms and diverted from entering the exit passageway.
In the accompanying drawings:
Figure 1 is a plan view of the amusement apparatus showing a car in full lines in position to enter the passageway without engaging either of the rotating platforms, and also showing in dotted lines the position of a car which has not made an accurate entrance and is being engaged by one of the rotating platforms which will divert it from making an entrance into the exit passageway;
Figure 2 is a section on the line 22 of Figure 1 showing the arrangement of the platform in the amusement floor and the method of driving the platforms;
Figure 8 is an elevation of a modified form of my invention.
Referring to the drawings in detail, 1 is an amusement pavillion floor over which the car 2 of the usual kind is directed in erratic fashion by an erratic steering gear well known in the art and quite customary in amusement pavillions of this character. An exit passageway?) is provided bordered on either side by walls 4. Adjacent the ends of these walls a are located small rapidly rotating platforms 5 flush with the floor 1 and rotating in a direction contrary to that in which the vehicle 2 must proceed in order to enter the passageway 3;
The distance between the margins of these two platforms is slightly greater than the lateral dimension of the car 2 so that the car can pass between the platforms without touching them if it is accurately guided, but, if it is not accurately guided and comes in contact with one or both of the platforms, it will be thrown outwardly away from the entrance and another effort must be made to get into the passageway 3.
In Figure 2 will be seen the method of driving these small rapidly revolving platforms. Each one is provided with a vertical supporting shaft 6 carrying a bevel gear 7 which in turn is engaged by a bevel driving gear 8 mounted on the shaft 9 of the motor 10. Obviously, any form of driving gear may be employed as this has nothing to do with my invention.
In Figure 3 is shown a modified form of mechanism with the rollers 5 above the platform 1. The vehicle 2 is provided with side bumpers 11 which are adapted to pass through grooves 12 in the sides of the rollers 5.
It will be understood that I desire to comprehend within my invention such modifications as may be necessary to adapt it to varying conditions and uses.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In an amusement apparatus, a platform, a passageway leading from the platform and a pair of revolving rollers located above the platform projecting into the exit passageway and so arranged as to engage with a car passing through said passageway unless said car is exactly positioned therebetween there being space enough between said rollers to permit of said passage if the car is accurately positioned in the passageway, driving means for rotating the rollers, and means for frictionally engaging the rollers with a portion of the vehicle.
2. In combination, a platform for amusement vehicles, an exit passageway communicating therewith, said passageway having sidewalls, a pair of rollers mounted at the entrance of said passageway on either side thereof at a distance greater than the Width of a vehicle adapted to pass therebetWeen, said rollers having cut-away sides for permitting the portions of the vehicle to pass therethrough, Whereby'if the vehicle is not accurately positioned thereloetween contact with either of said rollers will prevent it entering the exit passageway, driving means for rotating the rollers, and means for frictionally engaging the rollerswith a portion of the vehicle. e V
In testimony whereof, I affix my signature.
AUREL VASZIN.
