This invention relates to motor controllers,
and although not limited thereto the inven-' tion is particularly adapted to control of printin press motors.
An o ject of theinvention is to provide 1mproved and simplified control means of the above character.
Another object is to provide novel interlocking connections between the various control instrumentalities for accomplishment of the results hereinafter enumerated.
Another and more specific object is to provide a push-button operated controller for effecting forward or reverse operation of the motor, including accelerated operation of the motor, with alternative means for efiecting slow speed operation thereof. e
Other objects and advantages of the invention will hereinafter appear.
The accompanying drawing illustrates an embodiment of m invention which will now be described, it eing understood that the embodiment illustrated is susce tible of modification without departing rom the spirit and scope of my invention as defined in the appended claims.
In the drawing, Figure l is a diagrammatic and schematic view of a controller constructed and arranged in accordance with my invention, and
Fig. 2 is an across-the-line diagram of the circuit connections illustrated in Fi 1.
Referring more particularly to Flg. 1,-M indicates a polyphase induction motor having one terminal, T", of the stator permanently connected to line L, the terminals T and T thereof being adapted to be connected to lines L and L respectively, upon closure of electro-responsive switch F for operation of the motor in a forward direction, or to lines L and L respectively, upon closure of electro-responsive switch R for operation of the motor in a reverse direction; the circuits provided by the aforementioned connections being obvious. The secondary of the motor normally includes a plurality of resistances R R and R each connected at one end to the respective terminals of the rotor, as shown diagrammaticall at M M and M each of said resistances eing connected at the other end to a common point 5, in the'usual manner; whereby said resistances are normally included in the secondary circuit for starting of the motor. Associated with said resistances are adjustable contact arms 7, r, and
values of resistance indicated at m, w, and
92 as determined by the position of the respective contact arms 1', r, and r, as will be obvious.
Control of the aforementioned electro-responslve forward, reversing and accelerating switches is effected by means of a plurality ofpush-button switches A, B, and C, each of said push-button switches having normally open down contacts, whereas switches A and G are also provided with normally closed up contacts.- The switch F is provided with normally open auxiliary contacts 7 for a purpose hereinafter described.
The operation of the controller will now be described, with particular reference to the across-'the-line diagram of Fig. 2. Thus, the motor may be started in a forward direction by effecting closure of the normally open down contacts of switch B, thereby providing an energizing circuit for the Winding of switch F, which circuit may be traced from line L, by conductors 8 and 9 through the normally closed up contacts of switch A, by conductors 10 and 11 through the contacts of switch B, thence by conductor 12 through the Winding of said switch F, and by conductor 13 to line L. Upon closure of the main contacts of switch F the terminals T and T are respectively connected to lines L and L terminal T being permanently connected to line L as aforedescribed. The motor is thus started with the full value of resistances R R and R in the secondary circuit.
Switch F in closing effects closure of its auxiliary contacts 7 thereby completing a maintaining circuit for switch F, said maintaining circuit extending from line L to conductor 10, as heretofore traced, thence through the up contacts of switch C, by conductor 14 through said auxiliary contacts 7, by conductor 15 through the operating winding of switch AR, by conductors 16 and 12 through the winding of switch F, and by conductor 13 to line L. As will be apparent,
however the winding of switch AB is shortcircuited in a manner to render operatmg energization thereof dependent upon release of the switch B3 thereby providing for manual control of the uration of the startin period. When said maintaining circuit is ren ered effective, by opening of switch B as aforedescribed, the winding of switch AR is sufficiently energized to efiect closure thereof, thereby short-circuiting the values 2: and w of resistance at the right-hand side of contact arms r and 1' and the value m of resistance atthe left-hand side of contact arm 1*, thus providing for acceleration of the motor to the speed preselected by adjustment of said contact arms. If necessary or desirable a suitable resistance 17 may be connected across the terminals of the winding of switch AR for proper adjustment of the relative magnetization of switches F and AR to insure proper cooperation of said switches.
Obviously, at any time after establishment of running connections for the motor, the same may be temporaril brought back to slow speed conditions 0 operation by reclosure of switch B, which results in deenergization and 0 ing of accelerating switch AR,.acceleratmg connections for the motor being automatically re-established upon opening of switch B, as aforedescribed. Stopping of the motor may be effected at any time during operation thereof b depressing the pu'shbutton switch A to e ect disengagement of the up contacts thereof, thereby interrupting energization of the windings of accelerating switch AR and forward switch F. Push-button switch A is preferably provided with well known means to permit latching thereof in its intermediate position wherein both the up and down contacts thereof are disengaged.
Operation of the motor at slow speed from rest for inching may be efiected by closure of the normally open down contacts of switch C, thereby providing an energizing circuit for the winding of switch F which may be traced from line L to conductor 10, thence by conductor 18 through said down contacts, and'by conductors 19, 16 and 12 through said winding to line L. Under these conditions the normally closed up contacts of switch C are opened, thus preventing establishment of the aforementioned maintaining circuit for the winding of switch F, and likewise preventing operating energization of the winding of switch AR, so that upon release of switch C the motor is brought to rest. It will likewise be apparent that the motor may be brought to a slow speed condition of operation from full speed 0 ration thereof by depressing the switch whereas upon subsequent release of said switch the energizing circuit of the winding of switch F will beinterrupted to bring the motor to rest, as aforedescribed.
Reversing of the motor may be effected switch A, by conductor 20 through the winding of said reversing switch, and y conductor 21 to line L". Upon closure of switch R line L is connected to the terminal T of the motor whereas line L is connected to the terminal T to efiect operation thereof in the reverse direction, as will be obvious.
IVhile I have shown my invention as applied to the control of one type of motor, it
will be apparent to those skilled in'the art that the same is likewise adapted for control of other types of alternating or direct current motors.
