ELECTRIC swITcHING DEVICE. i
A.Applica'nm ined may 23,
i ularly applicable to street railways in whichV is employed avspring pressed toggle joint and a solenoid and plungertype armature in conjunction therewith; andthe advantages of our improvements are; first, to provide an improved holding devicev for the switch tongue, second, to apply the electro-mechanical orce to the holding parts inthe most efficient manner; and third; to reduce the number of parts and joints.
IVe attain these objects by the Velectro.- mechanical structure illustrated in the accompanying `drawing in which- Fig. 1 is a plan view ofthe entire. apparatus including a section of the track switch,
ground box without cover, toggle .joint and electro magnetwith its plunger armature;
Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the apparatus.,
Fig. 3 is a cross-sectional view o f a part of Fig. 1 along the line IML-A with a section of a switch throwing iron added;
Fig. 4 is a cross-sectional view of Fig. 1 along the line B-B withv the toggle joint inmid-way position. Iievers 1 and 2 are pivoted in bearings 'cast integrallywith ground-box 3 by pins l?, 2a. These leyers are articulated at their inner ends by pin 4 which also carries one'end yof plunger link 5, the other end of which is articulated lwith plunger armature 6a of magnet 6,.`
In the lid 3,, is an-opening3l, through which switch throwing iron l1 can be inserted `so as to engage slot' 1c Itovlever 1.
' This arrangement is provided for the .pur-
' 'pose of manually throwing switch the desired'position.
tongue to Magnet 6 isheld in a i'ixed position in the 1927. lSerial No. 193,495.
ground boxV lor casin'g 3 by ineans'ot lugs 3b and is constructed wit-h two solenoids 12Hm 13, one at each end to operate plunger 6a tov reverse positions as is usually foundin electric switch throwing art such as is found in the patent to Cheatham No. 612,702, issuedl October 18, 1898. As the current is applied to section 12 ofthe magnet G,farmature,6 will be pulled into the center cylinder of the magnet and thereby force the toggle joint j operations the switch tongue 9 is carried from one position to the other as desired.
We are aware that prior to our invention electrically operated track switches with various spring holding devices have been made;
We, therefore, do not claim such a combil nation broadly; but we claim:
1. In an electrically `Y.operated 'switch throwing device comprising a solenoid and a magnetic plunger Vconnected to a toggle joint employing a-common articulation.
2. In anelectrically operated switch throwing device comprising a solenoid and a magnetic plunger'equipped with a linkage connected to a toggle joint providedwith a pair of levers, said plunger linkage and` levers having a common articulation.
3. In an electrically operated lswitch j ground box comprising a solenoid and a magnetic plunger connected to a toggle joint with a common articulation.
4. In an electrically operated switch ground box comprising a connected to a toggle joint provided` with -a pair of levers, said'plunger, link and levers having a common articulation.y
5. In combination with a track switchiof an electrically operated switch throwing de` vicecomprising a solenoid and a magnetic` plunger connected to a toggle joint with a Vthrowing device mounted within an integral Y p v 1,685,149
common articulation, and linkage means for connecting the track switch to the toggle joint. y a 6. In an electrically operated switch 5 throwing device mounted within an integral double compartment ground box, comprising avsolenoid and a magnetic plunger disposed in one compartment provided with a linkage `connected to a toggle joint disposed in the other compartment7 provided with a pair o1u 10 levers having a common articulation for Saidplunger linkagc and said levers.
' In testimony whereof We affix our signatures.
