Description

J. M. HUTTON.
Construction of Caskets and Coffins.
'No. 168,499. Patente d0ct.5 ,1875.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFF CE.
JESSE M. HUTTON, OF RICHMOND, INDIANA.
IMPROVEMENT IN THE CONSTRUCTION OF GASKETS AND COFFINS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 168.499, dated October 5, 1875; application filed March 9, 1875.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, JEssE M. HUTTON, of
1 Richmond, county of Wayne and State of Indiana, have invented certain Improvements in Construction of Gaskets and Goffins, of which the following is a specification:
My invention relates to an improved method of joining the sides and ends of wood coffins and caskets, so as to form a curved recessed corner without showing a joint, and without the use of nails, being simply glued together, as hereinafter more fully described.
Figure l is a perspective View of the end of a coffin, showing the inside. Fig. 2 is also a perspective view, showing the outside and a corner.
A A represent the sides; B B, the curved corner-pieces, and (J the end. The sides A A and end 0 are worked with an ordinary plain groove, as shown at a, while the curved corner-pieces B B are grooved in such a manner as to form a barefaced tongue, I), on the outside, to match the groove in the sides and end, leaving a feather-edge, c, on the inside, in order to make a smooth and even finish, and give it strength.
It will be, observed that work thus put together shows no joint on the outside, and that even in case of shrinkage of any of the parts there cannot be an open joint. The several parts of a coffin or casket, having been worked at each edge with a harefaced tongue, I), and
internal feather or beveled lip 0, in combination with the side and end sections A G, centrally grooved, as shown, so as to fit the pieces B, strengthen and conceal the joints, and form recessed curved corners on the outside, and flush joints on the inside, as specified.
JESSE M. HUTTON.
