This invention relates to sideframes adapted for railway car trucks and, more especially, to such frames provided with depending jaws or pedestals the ends thereof e adapted to straddle associated journal boxes and means for adjusting said pedestals with respect to said boxes.
The principal object of my invention, generally considered, is the provision of aside 'to frame formed with pedestals or jaws at either end thereof and preferably wedge-shaped liner means attachable to the inner faces of said jaws for adjusting the eifective distance therebetween, whereby associated journal l boxes are, not only securely held in position, but the distance between the journal boxes at opposite ends of the frame, which determines the wheel base of the truck, may be adjusted. l V
An object of my invention is the provision of a side frame particularly adapted for railway car trucks and having jaws depending from opposite ends thereof formed for attaching associated journal boxes to the frame and means adapted to be secured to the faces of said jaws normally engaging saidV boxes for exactly maintaining the effective jaw width. u l
Another object of my invention is the provision of wedge-shaped adjusting .means adapted for slidable engagement with the sloping sides of pedestals or jaws of side frames adapted for receiving associated journal boxes, said means, after adjustment, being securable in position to closely embrace the Vcorresponding journal boxl and preferably formed with apertures therethrough adapted to receive locking means from the adjacent portions of the pedestals.`
Other objects and advantagesof thev mvention relating to the particular arrangement and construction of the'various parts will become apparent as the description proceeds.
Referring to the drawings illustrating my Figure 3 is a longitudinal sectional view on the line 3 3 of Figure 2 looking in the direction of the arrows.
Referring to the drawings in detail, like parts being designated by like reference characters, I have shown one end of a side frame 1 of the cast type provided with depending pedestals or jaws 2 and 8 adapted to straddle or embrace an associated journal box 1. AL though only one end of the frame 1 is illustrated, it will be obvious that said frame is preferably symmetrical and provided with corresponding-jaws or pedestals 2 and 3 at the opposite end thereof and that another corresponding journal box l `may be similarly connected at said other end.
In the embodiment illustratechthe jaws or pedestals 2 andB preferably slope downwardly and outwardly from the connecting portion 5 of the frame, said portion being adapt ed to normally rest directly on the top or roof 6 of the associatedjournal box 1. The sloping inner walls of the pedestals orjaws 2 and 3 are preferably disposed so as to allow some clearance 7 and 8 with respect tosaid journal box and adjustable liner bloclrs9 and 10 are provided'for enabling the aws of the frame to closely vembrace and hold the associated vjournal box. Although a particular construction of these liner blocks is illustrated and will new be described, it is obvious that I do not wish to be limite-d to the details and changes may be made therein within the spirit and scope of the appended claims.
In the embodiment disclosed, each liner block Sand l0 is formed with a wedge-shaped portion 11, the side walls of which are disposed at an angle corresponding to the inclination of the inner walls 'of the jawsor ped esta- ls 2 and 3.. The cuter surface ofV each liner block is adapted for slidable ei`igage-A ment along the corresponding inner surface ofthe associated side Vframe jaw until onlyk the necessary clearance is left between said linerv block and journal box. vEach liner block is then secured iniposition by inserting a suiiicient number of shi'ms 12 between the base portion or outstanding flange 18 and the corresponding connecting-web portion .14 betweenthe transversely spaced webs l5 of the side frame jaw defining longitudinal openings 16 through which the bases 13 ofthe liner blocks are inserted. After adjustment in place, each liner block may be secured in position by rivets 17 or other suitable securing means, the aperturesv 18, receiving said rivets, being longitudinally elongated, as
illustrated, to permit the adjustment heretofore referred to.
The journal boxes 4 are preferably formed with the upper portions ot their sides shaped to correspond with the shape ot' the adjacent portions of the jaws and the lower portions substantially vertical. or upright to correspond with the adjacent sides of the liner blocks 9 and 10, and may be securely held in place after adjustment and securing ot said liner blocks in place by a locking block 19 tor i cach journal box which slidably arranged in the aperture 16 in the corresponding outer pedestal and passes'through the corresponding aperture 2O vin the associated liner block 9, 'the inner end thereof being formed to correspond with and be inserted in a registering recess 21 in the adjacent side of the journal box. The other side of the journal box may be formed with a similar recess 22 so that it is adapted for connection at either end of the frame. Alter positioning in placethe lockingblock 19 may be securely held in any i desired manner as by means of a bolt or Cotter 23 passing 'through registering apertures in Y 'the walls 15 and locking block 19.] In order to avoid `inti-irference with the upper head'of the rivetA 17 the vlower side of said locking block 19 is formed with an elongated rivet head receiving pocket 24. j
From the foregoing dislosure, it will be apparent that I have devised a construction by means of which, not only may the exact jaw width of the journal box pedestals be maintained but, inasmuch as bothliner blocks are capable of longitudinal adjustmentin the same direction, it ispoiible to accurately ad- `just the wheel base olf the truck which is determined by the distancebetwen the `journal boxes at `opposite ends of the side frame. Although afparticular form ot lockingineans is shown, used with the liner blocks and pass-A ing therethrough, it is obvious that other forms may be employed, if desired, Although each liner block'is held iii'positionby a vertical `rivet,`whereby the necessity `for a long rivet receiving slot is obviated, it will i be apparent that I do not wisli to be limited to theemployment of vertically disposed securing means as such Ineans vextending through the webs of the pedestals adjacent the boxes ,and thea-djacent portions of the linerblocks may be employed, if desired.

A side frame having jaws adapted to -straddle a journal box and means adapted to be secured to the inner surface or" one of said jaws,'and`formed withan outstanding flange adapted to be secured to a supporting web of sai,d,jaw, for exactly maintaining the desired effective distance between said jaws.

A side frame having jaws adapted to straddle an associated journal box and wedge shaped means adapted to be secured to the inner surface of one of said jaws, and formed with a base portion for resting on adjusting Y shims supported by `saiiel jaw, and slidable` th'erealong for accurately maintaining the desired jaw width. A side frame formed with a pair of jaws at either end thereof adapted to embrace associated journal boxes, the surfaces ot'- said jaws, adjacent said journal boxes, sloping downwardly and outwardly, the outermost of said jaws being formed with longitudinally extending apertures, wedge shaped liner blocks with base portions extending thro-ugh said apertures and resting on the lower webs ofthe jaw portions, said liner blocks being formed with longitudinal apertures registering with the apertures in the jaws, and locking means insertible through said apertures in the jaws and liner blocks lwith their ends adapted to lengage in corresponding pockets in the associated journal boxes Jfor locking said boxes in place.
