I UNITARY CONDUIT AND SWITCH SUPPORT FQR GASOLINE-SERVING STATIONS.

This invention has for its object a combined or unitary conduit and switch support, and means for controlling the opening of the valve in the'conduit and at the same time operating the switch. The invention consists in the novel features and in the combinations and constructions hereinafter set forth and claimed This unitary structure is particularly designed to be used in gasoline serving or dispensing stations, where the gasoline is pumped from a storage tank into a measuring tank, the pump being driven by an electric motor which is controlled by a switch, and gasoline .flowing from the measuring tank through a hose into the gasoline tank of motor vehicles.
In describing this invention reference is had-to the accompanying drawings in which like characters designate corresponding parts in all the views.
Figures 1 and 2 are respectively an elevation and a plan view of this unitary structure.
Figure 3 is a sectional view taken approximately on line 33, Fig. 1.
This unitary structure comprises a conduit having a valveincluding a casing, connected therein, a switch support or housing, the housing and the conduit being joined together as a unit, and operating means for the valve and the switch including a handle mem ber common to both operating means. In this embodiment of my invention there is an operating member for the valve, and an operating member for the switch in the switch housing, and one of said members is arranged in the path of the other, and the latter has a handle, so that, theswitch is operated to close the circuit therethrough, and start the electric motor which actuates the pump, during the same operation that the valve is operated, to open the conduit to permit the gasoline to be pumped through the valve casing to the measur ng tank.
As the construction of the motor cpntrolled by the switch and the construction of the pump forms no part of this invention, further illustration and description is thought to be unnecessary and also as the construction of gasoline dispensing stations includin the circuit,
suflicient to bear in "mind that the switch controls the actuation of the motor which pumps the gasoline through the pipe.
1 designates the pipe or conduit, having a valve 1 including a valve casing 2 therein, the valve being operated to open and close by a suitable stem of shaft 3 movable about an axis, usually an upright axis. The valve member or gate 1 may be of any suitable form size and construction. 4 is the switch box or housing enclosing a switch 5 of any suitable construction, the box 4 and the conduit 1 being rigidly secured together as a unit. As here illustrated the conduit is formed with lugs 6 arranged to lap one side f the box 4, and secured thereto by screws as box.
The switch box has a detachable cover 8 secured thereto, in any suitable manner, as by screws 9, which cover carries switch operating means, as an endwisely movable rod 10, slidable in the cover 8, it being slidable vertically in this embodiment of my invention. Therod coacts with an actuating part or arms 11 which throws the switch, the rod being thrust in one direction to throw the switch off, by a spring 12. The spring encircles the rod and thrusts at one end against the cover,
and at its other end against a shoulder or actuator arm 11 of the switch.
Movement of the rod 10 upwardly against the action of the spring throws the switch to on position, so that, the motor is connected and movement of the rod in the other "direction throws the switch 01% to disengage the motor.
A suitable lever is connected to the rod 10 to actuate it, that here shown, being an angular lever 15, having ahub 16 mounted on the shaft 17 supported in horizontal position on the top of the box 4, the shaft being supported in suitable lugs 18 on the side top wall of the lever. One arm of the lever has a fork 19, working in a groove formedin a collar 20 on the upper end of the rod 10, and the other arm 21 extends upwardly.
The stem 3 of the valve 1 2, is operated by 'a-lever 22 stem 3 to rock said stem about avvertical axis, one of the levers 15 and 22 being arranged in within the casing mounted on said the path of the other and the latter having a handle, by means of which it is operated, so that, when it is operated it will engage the former lever and actuate the former member, and hence, the valve will be opened and the switch closed in the same operation.
As here shown, the lever 22 is provided with a suitable handle 23 and the upwardly extending arm 21 of the switch operating lever 15 extends into the path of the lever 22, such arm being provided with an engaging end as a ball 24.
When it is desired to open the valve for the purpose of pumping gasoline from the storage tank to the measuring tank, the lever 22, is moved to the left, Fig. 3, or upwardly in Fig. 2, thus opening the valve and during such movement the lever 22 engages the ball 24 of the switch operating lever arm 21, and causes the lever 15 to pull upwardly on the rod 10, and thro w the switch on, against the action of the spring 12. The operator holds the lever 22 to the left until he sees that the measuring tank is full or filled to the desired extent and then upon releasing the handle 23 or upon turning the handle 23 to the right to close the valve, the spring 12, automatically throws the switch to off position, and returns the lever 15 to its normal position.
This unitary structure and the arrangement of the operating levers is particularly advantageous in that they can be readily installed as a unit in the pump system or the frame supporting the measuring tank.
What I claim is:
In a device of the class described, the combination of a conduit, a valve including a valve casing in the conduit, a switch housing mounted on the conduit and arranged at one side thereof so that the conduit is a bypass around the housing, valve operating means carried by the valve casing, a switch, a cover for the switch housing carried by the switch housing, switch operating means carried by the cover and including a portion locatcd in the cover and removable.as a unit therewith, each of said operating means including a part, one of which extends into the path of the other to be operated thereby.
