PAPER HOLDING AND ADVANCING MECHANISM.
Application filed June 19,
My said invention relates to paper holding and guiding devices and it is an object of the invention to provide compact and portaole means for holding and adjusting one or more sheets of paper bearing printed or written matter in a manner to facilitate reading and copying ofsuch matter by an peratoron a typewriter or by hand.
Another object of the invention is to provide a device of this character operable in a manner similar to the conventional typewriter for inserting the paper, alining the print and advancing the paper lin e-for-line through the machine.
Referring to the accompanying drawings which are made a part hereof'and on which similar reference characters indicate similar parts, p v

Figure 11, a section on line 11-11 of Figure 6. V
In the drawings reference character 10 indicates a housing or frame of the device in which is mounted a shaft 11 which supports a cylinder or roller 12 formed of rubber or other relatively soft gripping material. The shaft 11 is provided. on its outer end with an operating knob 13 and a friction clutch disk is also mounted on said shaft between the opera-ting knob and the end of the cylinder 12. A lever 16 has one end loosely mounted on the shaft '11 betweenthe hubs of the knob 13 anddisk 14 upon the intermediate portion of which lever is mounted a screw 17 that forms a pivotal support for a gravityoperated clutch member 18 provided. with a slot 19 to engage the. rim of the clutch disk 14. 'The clutch member 18 is relatively 1826. Serial No. 117,204.
thin at its slotted portion to affect the oper ation of grlppmg or blnding the mm. 15 and is provided with a thickened portion 20 to assist in the gripping action by reason of its Qadded weight. I v
The lever 16 isxpro-videdat its outer end with a pivot 21 to which isconnccted one end of a link 22,the other end of said link being connected to a pivot 23 carried by the offset extremity 24 of a rocker bar 25. Said rocker bar 25 is mounted on pivots 27 and is provided with a strike bar 26 which is adapted to be depressed for elevating link 22 and lever 16 to cause the clutch member 18 to grip, the rim 15 of the clutch disk 14 and rotate the same and the shaft 11 upon which 1t is supported aswell as the cylinder 12 mounted on said shaft. To aid and insure the operating mechanism returning to its original position a spring 28 is provided. one
end of which extends through a hole 29 in the link 22 and the other end of the spring extends through a boss or lug 30, said boss or lug alsoserving as astop for limiting the downward movement of the link 22 and lever 16 as well as the upward movement of the bar26. i or e In order that the upward movement of the lever 16 may be varied and adjusted tothe various line spacings found on printed inatter an adjusting hub 31 is provided said hub having an operating knob adaptedfor contact with portion 33 of the rocker bar 25, said huh and knob being carried on a threaded stub 34 which projects through a vertical slot 35 in the housing 10. I provide the screw 34 with flattened side'fportions 36 adapted to fit in the slot 35 and preventthe screw from turning when the knob is rotated to tighten'the same in position.
The housing 10 is provided 'with an opening 37 extending longitudinally across the sameiand below said opening and the roller 12 is provided a pan orguide 38 having attached thereto a bar 40 which extends longitudinally of the guide and is provided with inturned ends 41 supported by pivots 39 in the form of screws extending through the ends of the housing 10. The guide 38 is: provided with bearings '42 in which is mounted a small roller 43 of material similar to 'cylinder 12 and adapted for co-operation with the cylinder 12 for holding paper in position. in order to cause the roller 43 to bear against the roller 12the guide or pan 38' is provided with a flange 45 to which the upper ends of springs 44 are attached, the lower ends of straight edge 49 pivoted at 50 within the housing 10 so that it will rest, on account of its own weight, with its upper edge against thepaper regardless of the thickness of the same or whether one or several sheets are inserted.
Pressure releasing means is provided for releasing the pressure of the roller 43 against the cylinder 12 in order that paper may be V readily inserted and alined in the holder.
Said means comprises acam or laterally bent portion 51 of a longitudinally disposed shaft 52 which is mounted behind the guide or pan 38, said shaft being pivoted at one end in boss 53 and at its other end on screw pivot 54. The end of shaft 52 extends laterally through the casing and forms a handle 55 by means of which whenthe same is pulled forward, as shown by dotted lines in Figure 6, the offset portion of'cam 51 will bear "against the guide 38 and move the same laterally on its pivots 39 against the tension of thesprings 44 until the cam 51 has passed beyond a line between the centers of the shafts 11 and 52 where it will remain until the handle is again manipulated to bring parts to their original positions.
A roller 56 of material similar to the rollers 12 and 43 is mounted on arms 57 supported on pivots 58 on the housing, said arms being pulled downward by springs 59 causing the roller 56 to bear against theupper portion ofthe cylinder 12 in order to hold the paper after it is fed downwardly around the roller 12 and upwardly past the roller 43 and plate or straight edge 49. 1 i
A cam 60 is supported by a pivot 61 on one of the arms 57, one end of the cam being. provided with a manipulating extension or tab 62 by means of which the roller may be swung backwardly to the position shown in Figure 2 where it is out of the way or the cam may be swung on its pivot until the inner end 63 of the tab 62 bears against the arm '57, as shown by dotted lines in Figure 2. It will be notedthat when a sheet of 7 paper has been inserted in the machine and advanced past the roller 43 the paper will still be held in place by roller 56 and a straight edge or plate 49 which permits the last line to beheld in properly alined posi tion to be read.
It is desirable to havethe cylinder 12 freely rotatable in either direction while the paper is being inserted and adjustable at all rim 14 I provide an adjustable release screw 64 mounted in a boss or lug 65 on the housing adapted to be adjusted so that it will just hold the clutch member 18 in a position sufiiciently elevated to prevent the same from binding upon the rim when the lever 16 is" inits normal position, as indicated in full lines in Figure 8. j
iVhen the strike bar 26 is depressed to lift the lever 16 the pivot 17 upon which the clutch member 18 is mounted willbe elevated and the free weighted end will be lifted oil of the screw 64 and will grip and rotate the rim and the cylinder 12. The gravity operated clutch member fits snugly on the rim 15 and there is little lost motion introduced by the release, said lost motion remaining constant will have no effect on the spacing. In order to enhance the wearing qualities the clutch member 18 is preferably formed ofharder'material than the rim 15.
In the operation of the device the paper hearing the printed matter or the like to be copied is inserted downwardly through the slot 37 and between the guide 38 and the cylinder or roller 12 around the cylinder and upwardly past the roller 43 whereupon turning of the knob 13 to rotate the cylinder 12 in the direction of the arrow will advance the paper upwardly past the plate or straight edge 49tuntil the line of print is visible and the upper edge'of the paper is caught beneath the roller 56, said roller being elevated by manipulating the lever 62, whereupon the. strike bar may be depressed for advancing the through the machine.
paper 'line-by-line I j i i 110 i y In order to adjust the device to the spar.
ing of the lines on the paper the paper is .inserted asjust described and the strike bar is again depressed until the next line. of
print is v sible above the plate 49. While the strike bar is thus held in depressed position the knob 32 is loosened and moved until its upper portion 31'contacts with the,por
tion 33 of the rocker bar 25. Whereupon the i knob isre-tightened thereby limiting thereafter the amount of upward movement imparted to the link 22 and bar 16, until further adjustment becomes desirable.
It will be obvious to'thoseskilled in the art that various changes may be made in my device without departing from the spirit of the invention and therefore I do not limit myself to what is shown inthe. drawings and described in the specification but onlyas.
indicatedin theappended claim.
- mounted concentrically of said rim and eX-' vention, What I claim as new and desire to.
secure by Letters Patent, is: V
The combination of a rotary element having a laterally extending rim, v a lever tending beyond the periphery of the same, a
clutch member mounted on said lever and having a slot receiving said rim, comprising means for oscillating the lever to rotate the rim, a manually operable lever spaced from said first-mentioned lever, a link connecting said levers, an adjustably mounted stop for limiting the stroke of the manually operable lever, and a lug for limiting the downward movement of the link, substantially as set forth.
In Witness whereof, I have hereunto set my hand at Indianapolis, Indiana this 14th day of June, A. nineteen hundred and 20 twenty-six.
