MANIFOLDING REGISTER.

Our invention relates to manifolding maf chines and more particularly to autographic registers, same being one type of manifolder on which the notations are made by hand Writing.
Itis the object of our invention-to provide a simple and effective meansfor providing a total summary record strip in machines of the' general character shown and described in the U. S. Patent to T.. F. Schirmer No. 940,481.
A total summary requires only the registration of those items on a shipping bill or merchandisel strip which give the totals or certain specific parts of the transactions set down on the bill or strip. Thus only a relatively small amount of space on the summary record strip needs to be moved across the writing support of manifolding machines as compared to the amount necessary to make up a complete form to be issued.
It is the object of our invention to provide for the mounting, tensioning and rewinding of a summary strip in a simple manner, so as to give a tight Well formed roll and it is also our object to so construct this device that it is well adapted to production' on different sizes of machines without altering the mechanism in any essential respect.
These objects and other advantages to be noted we accomplish by that certain construction and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter more specifically pointed out and claimed.

It will be noted that no attempt has been made to show a complete autographic register, and reference is made to the Schirmer patent, above identified for this purpose.
We have indicated the side frame pieces 1, the writing table vor tablet 2. which as in the usual machines of the Schirmer type, is supported on the side frame pieces, and the hinged lid or top 3. ln the top is the tension roller 4. housed in a housing 5, and spring-pressed downwardly by springs 6 The edge 8A of the top forms a tear-oft' blade.
` The paper feed for the forms to be issued is formed of shaft 7 on which are pin wheels 8, said shaft being rotated counterclockwise to effect the feed.
The issued form strips are Amounted in rolls 10 set on shafts 11 in the machine. The manner of mounting these shafts 11 is nonessential. The form strips are brought up over idler rolls 12, and thence over the Writing table where the strips which are marginally punched are set over the pins 13 of the feed device. Carbon paper is interleaved between the form strips and the lower form and the summary strip.

in their details form no part of this inven-" tion, as any form of feeding device for issuing and marking onform strips would serve I the purpose. The total summary strip 16 is mounted in theform of a roll 17 on the shaft or spindle 18, Which is rotatably supported in any desired manner in the machine frame.
. Formed in the base 19 of the machine frame is a slot 20; a tension finger 21 is provided having a base plate 22, which rests on the base 19. Two tongues 23 and 24 depend from the base through the slot to guide the base 22.
One of the tongues, i. e. the tongue 23, is formed as a hook to which is attached a spring 25, which spring is attached also to a hook 26 beneath the base of the machine.
It will be noted of the machine base 19 lthat it is formed of a sheet metal piece curled down at the edges 27 to form an elevated base, beneath which the hook 26 will have clearance.
The construction above described is so placed that the finger 21 bears against the roll 17, in such a Way as keeps the roll firmly against accidental unwinding, or looseness of the strip 16.
The strip 16 is passed up over an idler 28, and thence is drawn along the writing table for a short space suiiicient to cover the summary space of lines on which the totals and data are inscribed on the issued strips. It then passesv down through a slot 29 formed with a sloping rear wall 30, to the underside of the writing table again.
