VALVE MECHANISM.
Application filed March 19, 1921. Serial No. 453,79Q.
My invention relates to valve mechanisms, and more particularly to valve mechanisms for pumps or compressors. p
An object of my invention 1s to provide an improved valve mechanism for use n pumps and more part cularly for use in pumps of thetype used for the compression of gaseous fluids. Another ob ect of my invention is to provide an improved and in very simple type of valve mechanism for pumps of the type specified in which springs may be omitted'and 1n wh1ch alarge port area maybe secured with relatively small over-all valve area. p a 5 In the accompanying drawings I have shown for purposes of illustration two forms which my invention may assume no practice.
In these drawings, Fig. lis a view partially elevation and 0 partially in central longitudinal section through one end of the compressor cyhnder.
i Fig. 2 is a view partially 1n elevatlonwith parts broken away, and partially 111 sect1on,
of a valve cage constructed n accordance 5 with my invention. Fig. 3 is atransverse section on the hue Fig. 4c is a view in section corresponding to the lower right hand corner of Flg. 2, and 1 showing another illustrat1ve form which my invention may assume in practice,
In illustrating my invention I have shown it embodied in a pump of the air compressor type comprising a cylinder 1 having abore i 2 in which a piston 3 lSTEiClPIOCELblG 111 a well-known manner." The cylinder 1 is closed at its rear endby a head members divided into two compartments by a partitlon 5, the compartments being numbered 6 and? being, respectively, inlet and discharge compartments. The inlet compartment communicateswith anintake pipe or line 8 and the discharge compartment with a discharge pipe 9. Within each of thecompartments is arranged valve constructed in accordance with illustrative formof my invention. a y l p a p L Describing first the discharge valve mechanism; it willbenoted to comprisea cage member 10 formed upon its OPPOSIiJB SIClBS with parallel grooves 11, these grooves llloeing so arranged that the grooves onone side lie hettveen those on the other and the member 15.
valves in position. i, y a
connected through their intervening walls 12 by ports 13, which ports are closed when the compressor is idle by narrow thin sheet metal plate valves 14; the side walls of the grooves against which the valves il l abut being ground to permit smooth seating. Within the grooves 11 on the side toward the cylinder head of the cage member 10are secured backing members 15, these members being very slightly shorter than thelength of the valves 14 and ofa width at their central portions sufficiently less than the width between the walls 12 of theslots to permit the valve to lie freely-but their sides and the walls 12. The members 15, are tapered from the center toward each end in such manner as to provideincreasing snugly between clearance at the endsthereof whereby the valves may, incler the action offluid pressure, be pressed from their seatsadjacent the ends and be rolled back around the sides of ing the valves 14 from falling outiof place, I provide a cover plate 16 having openings 17 therethrough coinciding with the grooves 11in the cage memberlO, theopenings be ing traversed at their central portions by web members 18 which VV'th respect to the inlet valves, the
mary distinction will be found in the fact that the grooves containing the valve memhers 14 are arranged on the side of the cage toward the cylinderborelandthat the cover plate 16 is appliedonthat side of the cage instead of uponthel opposite side. a
It will be obvious that the precise form oi backing members for the valves shown does not need to be employed andlthat instead of tapering these membersfrom the center towards the ends iitimpossible to make them ofmaximum thickness at the ends and. taper them toward the centerlwhereby l the central portionof the ViLlVQOPGllS a max yimum amount.
This construction is illustrated in Fig. at in which a backingimember 15. is shown of awidth just less than the vention may assun'ie in praetice it will. a h 1 For the purpose of prevent- 1' servej to retain the 1 widthof the groove 11 at its ends 19 but at at its center of a relatively much smaller thicksaid seats and approaching understood that these forms of the same are shown for purposes of illustration and that the invention may be modified and embodied in other forms without departing from its spirit or the scope of the appended claims.
