This inventionrelates to improvements in printing devices of that classwhich comprises a plurality of printing forms and an information card carried by a frame. and adapted to be stored in accordancewlth a card index system or stacked in a pile, and run through an addressing or other pr1nting machine for taking an impression from the form. These devices are used not only for (printing addresses, but they are now Inadeto print a great deal of additional 1nformatiom parts of which are liable to change with more or less frequency.

The object of this invention is to provide a printin device comprising a frame having retaining means stamped from the frame and suitably disposed thereon to receive a plurality of printing plates, the retalnlng means being of such a nature and so disposed upon the frame that they do not weaken the frame for use in the manner intended, but facilitate the insertion and removal of the plates and hold them securely in fixed osition on the frame.

A furt er object of the invention is to provide a shiftable index tab which may be used alone or in conjunction with one or more removable index tabs for classifying the printing devices.

In the accompanying drawings I have 1llustrated my invention in a .preferred embodiment in which:

Referring to the drawings, the frame 5.1s provided at its top with a bead 6 and at its bottom with a bead 7 on the front thereof, and at its ends with spacing flanges 8 on the back thereof. There are three separate and independent printing plate sections removably mounted on the frame and each bearing type characters, embossed thereon. All of these sections are engaged with and disengaged from the frame by endwise movement and any one of them may be 1nserted or removed from the frame without `with the bea disturbing either of the other sections. The sectlon 91is held in the frame beneath the bead 7, the li 12 at one end and the locking device 13 at t e other end. This locking device' 1s in the form of a tongue formed by cuttlng away some of the material of the frame, as best shown in Fig. 2, and it is rovided with a stop 13 to engage the en of the plate section 9 opposite the end which is engaged by the lipl 12.. The plate section 9 has a projection 14 at the endwhich is enga-ged by the locking device, andthis projection extends upward and is engaged beneath a lip 14 on the frame. This lip 14 holds the plate section 9 in enga ement with the bead 7 and so that the top ine of type charactersfthereon will be properly spaced with relation to the bottom line of type characters on the middle plate section 10. It is ing device 13, it is necessary to provide the projection 14 and to locate the lip 14 opposite the end of the plate section 10 which is cut away at 15 to accommodate the projection 14 and the lip 14.

The middle plate section 10 is held 'on the frame beneath the lip 16 at one end, the lips 17 engaging the top edcfe of the plate section, the lip 18 engaging the bottom edge at one corner and the locking device 19 having a stop 19 thereon to eng` ge the opposite end. The lip 16 is located above the locking device 13 and the' locking device 19 is located above the lip l2 so that the two

9 and 10 are inserted in and removed from the frame at opposite ends of the frame. The lip 18 is located below the locking device 19 at the corner of. the plate section 10.

Only one li is provided to engage the {1pper edge of t e lower late section 9, at the projection 14, because it will hold the right end of the late section 9 in engagement 7, and the lip 18 will prevent the left end of" this plate section from becoming disengaged'from the bead, Fig. 1. Only one lip 18 engages the lowe'r edge of the middle plate section 10 because the lip 14 engaging the right end of the plate section 10, Fig. 1, will prevent the section from becoming disengaged from the lips 17.

The printing plate section 11 is held between the lip 2() at one end and the locking device 21 having a sto 22 at its other end, and beneath lips 23 w ich engage the bottom edge of the plate and lips 24 which engage the top edge of the late. The lip 20 is located above the loc ring device 19 and the lip 12 and the locking device 21 are located above the lip 16 and the locking device 13 so that the section 11 is adapted to be inserted in and removed from the frame at the same end as the lower section 9. 26, 26 is pivoted at 27 to the upper portion of the frame adjacent one end thereof and the arms are so disposed that by shifting the tab one may lbe (projected above the top edge of the frame an the other swung to a position at the back of the frame and below the top edge thereof. This shiftable tab has a iin er 28 which projects through a slot 29 in t e frame and engages one or more sto s 30 to hold the shiftable tab in adjuste position. Alongside the sliiftable tab the frame is provided with keepers 31 to receive removable tabs 32, these removable tabs being used in conjunction with the shiftable tab for classifyino` the printing devices according to a card in ex or other classification system. The tab subject matter is not claimed herein but forms the subject of my divisional application Serial No. 252,158, filed Februar 6, 1928. j

The card 33 is remova ly engaged with the bead 6, the corner llip 34, and the bottom Ylips 35, 35', the latterbeing arranged to engage the bottom edge of the card at the end opposite the corner which is engaged by the corner lip 34. A stop 36 on the frame engages the right end of the card and holds it in place in the frame with its left end engaged with the corner stop 34, Fig. 1. The card bears printed matter relating to the rinting device and it may be an impression rom some or all of the plates, or other in formation data and the card is insertable in and removable from the frame in a manner similar to the printing plate sections.

My invention provides a frame and plate section construction which has been found to be highly desirable in special classes of Work,

. the plates can be easily inserted in and removed from the frame, they are held in substantially fixed position in the frame in proper spacing relation to each other, and the retaining means are disposed on the frame in a manner which will permit the lates to be easily inserted and removed and which will hold the lates in proper osition on the vframe and w ich do not wea en the frame for the purposes for which it is intended. The shiftable tab is a convenient means for temporarily sub-classifying a printing device without completely disturbing its position in a more or less complicated classification and it can be easily operated for this purpose.

This invention presents improvements upon Patents No. 1,375,683 patented April 26, 1921 and No. 1,310,026 patented September 7 6, 1921, which have been found to be desirable in actual use, and while I intend and prefer that the devices shall be made, as they have been made, as illustrated in tlie drawings and herein described, I reserve the right to make such changes in the forni, eonstruction and arrangement of parts as come within the scope of the following claims.

I claim:

1. A printing device of the character described comprising a frame, and three separate rinting plate sections removably secured in place thereon one above the other, said frame having retaining means stamped therefrom to engage and hold the plate sections, and said means comprising a locking device for each plate section to engage an end thereof, said locking devices being disposed alternately at the ends of the frame to engage one end of the middle section and the opposite ends of the top and bottom sections.

2. A printing device of the character described comprising a frame, and three separate printing plate sections removably sel" cured in place thereon one above the other and spaced from each other, said frame having retaining means stamped therefrom to engage and hold the plate sections, and said means comprising a yieldable locking de- 1 vice for each plate section to engage an end thereof, said locking devices being disposed alternately at the ends of the frame to engage one end of the middle section and the opposite ends of the top and bottom sections, 1

whereby the middle section is insertable in and removable from the frame over its locking device at one end of the frame and the top and bottom sections are insertable in and removable from the frame over the locking 1 devices at the other end of the frame.

3. A printing device of the chai'acterdescribed comprising a frame, and two separate printing plate sections removably secured in place thereon one above the other, 1f
