During normal operation of the cooling system, the' cooling medium, preferably water, enters the jacketspace 7 at the bottom through the supply pipe 13 and the ejector ll and the ejector discharge wall 12 directs the entering Water tangentially with respect to the jacket space 7. The entering water by virtue of its high velocity draws other water from within the jacket through the perforations of thewall 12 and produces a thorough circulation of the coolmg medium entirely about the inner wall 4. By properly setting the control valve 15,the quantity of cooling medium discharged from the jacket space 7 through the pipe 14; may be effectively controlled,
and the temperature of the jacket water may thus be accurately regulated. The inlet of cooling water may obviously be effected through one of the holes 10, if so desired, and several supply pipes 13 and ejectors 11 may be provided in case more rapid circulation of the cooling medium within the jacket, is desired. It will be apparent that the invention provides simple and efficient means for automatically and effectively equalizing the temperatures of the cylinder jacket water, with the aid of the diffuser or ejector 11. This ejector by thoroughly circulating the, cooling water entirely around the inner wall 1 and the liner 3, prevents the formation of local pockets within which undesirably heated water might accumulate.

It is claimed and desired to secure by Letters Patent:
1. In combination, inner and outer walls spaced apart to provide a continuous annular jacket, means for admitting fluid to said jacket tangentially thereof and away from said inner wall, and lllfiflS for controlling the quantity of fluid passing through said jacket.
2. In combination, inner and outer Walls spaced apart to provide a continuous annular jacket surrounding said inner wall, means for admitting fluid to said jacket, an ejector for producing a flow of the admitted fluid through said jacket and entirely about said inner wall, and means for controlling the quantity of fluid passing through said jacket.
3. In combination, inner and outer walls spaced apart to provide a continuous annular jacket, means for admitting fluid to the lower )ortion of said jacket, means for causing said fluid to flow in the same direction entirely around said inner wall throughout said jacket, and means for controlling the delivery of fluid from an upper portion of said jacket.
4. In combination, inner and outer walls spaced apart to provide a continuous annular jacket surrounding said inner wall,
the admitted fluid to travel throughout said jacket and entirely around said inner'wall in the same direction, a discharge pipe for said fluid atthe upper portion of said jacket,
and means for controlling the quantity of fluid passing through said jacket.
6. In combination, inner and outer walls spaced apart to provide a continuous annular jacket surrounding said inner wall, means for admitting fluid to the lower portion of said jacket, an ejector for causing the admitted fluid to travel throughout said jacket and entirely around said inner wall in the same direction, a discharge pipe for said fluid at the upper portion of said jacket,
and means associated with said discharge means for controlling the quantity of fluid passing through said jacket.
