IMPROVEMENT IN STREET-LAMP SIGNALS FOR LOCATING FIRE-PLUGS. v

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No- 168,239, dated September 28, 1875 application filed April 3, 1875.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, GEORGE H. DOUGHER- TY, of Jersey City, in the county of Hudson and State of New Jersey, have invented a cer-' tain mode of Finding the Location of Street- Hydrants, of which the following is a specification:

The object of my invention is to enable firemen to find the location of street-hydrants at night without any loss of time. I

This invention consists in the arrangement of differently-colored signals within the same streetlamp that is nearest to the hydrant, in such a manner that one of the signals of a certain color will always show toward the place where the hydrant is located, while another signal of a different color shows in the opposite direction, to indicate that the hydrant is located on the other side of the streetlamp showing said signal. Thus, if the firemen are coming in the direction of the firstnamed signal, they will know that the hydrant is on the near side of the'lamp, and if coming in the direction of the second named signal they will know thatthe hydrant is on the far side of the lamp. in the shape of a bulls-eye, globe, prism, &c. These signals are placed inside of the lamp between the light and the glass by means of a wire or otherwise, so that the signal of a certain color will always be seen on that side of the'street-lamp where the hydrant is located, while the other signal of adifferent color is arranged so as to be seen on the other side of the lamp. If the hydrant is located on that side of the street opposite to where the lamps are, it would be necessary to arrange the firstnamed signal so as to show across the street toward the hydrant, while two of the secondnamedsignals have to be arranged to show both up and down the street. By these means firemen, in whatever direction they may come, will always be able to find the hydrants readily, and without any loss of time, in the darkest nights'and narrowest streets.

An additional signal of a color different from those already mentioned might be arranged in a similar way within the lamps, so as to indicate the location of water-gates at night.

What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is v In combination with a street-lamp, signals of different colors arranged therein in relation to each other and to the adjacent fire-plug, so as to indicate upon which side of the lamp said fire-plug is located, substantially as set forth.
