TABLE-LEAF-ALIGNING DEVICE.

This invention relates to improvements in table leaf aligning devices.
Table leaves now in ordinary use are provided with dowel pins and dowel pin openings along their edges for holding the leaves in horizontal and longitudinal alignment. In placing more leaves in the table, it is necessary to exercise extreme care in lining up the pins with the openings, or the pins will at times strike the upper or lower edges of the leaves and break the same, or if the pins strike the edges of the openings, said openings will be gradually enlarged and the leaves will not line up endwise or vertically. Furthermore, it is necessary to drill holes in both edges of each leaf and insert and glue dowel pins in the holes along one edge of each leaf.
It is one of the objects of the present in vention to overcome the before mentioned objectionable features and provide a table leaf alignin device which will align the table leaves both vertically and longitudinally without the necessity of drilling edge holes or the use of dowel pins.
A further object of the invention is to provide a table leaf aligning device which may be easily mounted on the lower side portions of the table leaves.
A further object of the invention is to pro- 80 vide a table leafaligning device which will align the leaves in a very simple manner and firmly hold the leaves in aligned position.
A further object of the invention is to provide a table leaf aligning device which is of simple construction, is strong and durable, and is well adapted for the purpose described.
With the above and other objects in view, the invention consists of the improved table leaf aligning device and its parts and combinations as set forth in the claims, and all equivalents thereof. a

Referring to the drawing, the numerals 5 and 6 indicate two table leaves upon the under side of which the improved aligning device 7 .5 is mounted. Said device comprises a rectan- 1926. Serial No. 115,558.
gular shapedplate of metal- Shaving an edge recess 9, and another rectangular shaped plate of metal 10 having a projecting tongue portion 11. Both plates are connected to table leaves by screws 12 and the plate 8 is positioned so that its recessed edge portion will project outwardly from the leaf to underlap the next adjacent leaf, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2 of the drawing. The plate portion 10 1s also positioned so that its tongue portion 11 will project beyond the edge of the leaf and also beyond the edge of the adjacent leaf and enter the recess of the plate mounted on the other leaf beneath said leaf to hold the two leaves in alignment vertically with respect to each other. The recess 9 of the plate 8 is of tapered formation to correspond to the taper of the tongue 11 to easily guide the parts together and the leaves to endwise alignment. The end portion 11 of the tongue 11 and the projecting end portions 8 of the plate 8 are curved or beveled downwardly to I more easily engage and slide beneath the adjacent leaves.
When the plates are in engagement with each other in the manner shown in Figs. 1 and 2, the leaves will be held in alignment and against endwise and vertical movement with relation to each other.
It is to be understood that two or more of the devices are to be used on the adjacent edge portions of the leaves.
From the foregoing description it will be seen that the table leaf aligning device is of very simple construction and is well adapted for the purpose described.
lVhat I claim as my invention is:
c 1. The combination with a pair of table leaves, of an aligning device therefor, comprising a'plate mounted on the lower edge portion of one of the leaves and having a tapered recess, edge portions of said plate adjacent the taper projecting outwardly and downwardly from the leaf, and another plate mounted on the adjacent lower edge portion m0 of the other leaf and having an outwardly and downwardly projecting tapered tongue which enters the tapered recess of the first mentioned plate, said downwardly projecting portions engageable with the lower por- 105 tions of the table leaves to guide the leaves together.
2. The combination with a pair of table leaves, of an aligning device therefor, comprising a'plate mounted on the lower edge 110 plate mounted on the adjacent lower edge portion of the other leaf and having a projeeting tapered tongue formed with a downwardly beveled end part, said tongue entering the ta ered recess.
3. A ta le leaf aligning device consisting of a pair of plates having means for attachmerit to table leaves, one of said plates having a tapered edge recess and downwardly beveled edges on each side of said recess, and the other plate having a tapered projecting edge tongue with a downwardly beveled end portion.
