REINHOLD SZELINSKI, F RIETBERG. GERMANY.
AUTOMATIC RAILWAY COUPLING.
Application filed June 20. 1927, swarm.
" guide is provided for the coupling eyes for closing or folding the same in their uncoupled position.
The accompanying drawing illustrates the improved arrangement Fig. 1 is a longitudinal section on the line A-B of Fig. 2, which is a plan View of the improved railway coupling as mounted on the end of a railway car, Figs. 3, 4 and 5 are longitudinal sections respectively on the lines C-D, E-F,
and GH, of Fig. 2, Fig. 6 is a perspective view of a detail of the improved railway coupling on a larger scale, whileFigs. 7, 8 and 9 show in diagrammatical side views the different steps of coupling.
The draw-bar a carries at its end beyond the end wall of the car the heart-shaped double coupling hook. I) and on the inner side of said end wall a slide 0, thatcan be moved thereon in longitudinal direction by means of a screw-spindle d engaging'with the lower end of said slide. Said screwspindle can be operated by means of a bevel gear 6 from a transverse spindle w project ing beyond the sides of the railway car and carrying there crank handles Said slide 0 carries two coupling eyes 70' and i pivoted thereto at g and h and at their ends extended beyond their pivots,- on which extensions lateral pins Z, we are provided, to which coil springs n, 0 are attached for keeping the eyes in closed position (Figs. 2, 5 and 6). The two longitudinal members 2? of the un derframing of the car carry longitudinally guided and slidable keys 9 (Figs. 2, 3, 4) by which said pins Z, 'm. (Fig. 6) are so guided that the coupling eyes 72-, i are opened by a displacement of the keysq toward the end of the ear and closed bymoving said 200,255, and in Germany December 7, 1926.
keys in opposite direction. Said displace ment of the keys 9 takes place by means of a system of levers s, u, a 3 2 (Fig. 8) adapted to be operated from the sides of the car by means of hand cranks 0'2. Be-
sides, on the members t (Fig. 4)'a parallel guide p is fixed for folding the coupling eyes in their uncoupled position and arrest the same in the middle recess of the coupling hook b (Fig. 7, left-hand hook).
To couple two cars, it is only'necessary to operate one of the two couplings. First, before running the two cars upon one an,- other, by means of the hand cranks f and slide 0 the two eyes 70, z' are partly opened 1g. 7, right-hand hook). Upon the cars belng run upon one another, the partly opened coupling eyes 70, 2' of one car are moved over the heart-shaped coupling hook I) of the other car until they engage in the upper and lower mouths thereof by action of the coil springs n, 0 (Figs. 6 and 8). To secure the coupling in its locked position, the slide a is retracted so that the coupling eyes cannot move out-of the hook (Fig. 9).
The uncoupling is effected by an'operation I of the parts in reverse direction, the keys g operated by the hand cranks 1" serving then to lift the coupling eyes out of the hook. Freferably, said hand cranks can-be locked in any position.
What I claim, is I 1. In an automatic railway coupling, the combination of a draw-bar, a heart-shaped double coupling hook, a slide on said draw bar adapted to be adjusted thereon in longitudinal direction, pivotalcoupling eyes on said slide having their ends extended beyond their pivots, and coil springs attached to said latter extensions and acting to keep said eyesin closed position. I
2. In a railway coupling as specified in claim 1, longitudinally guided and slidable keys for either opening or closing said coupling eyes.
3. In a railway coupling as specified in claim 1, a fixed parallel guidefor'said cou-' pling eyes for closing the same in their uncoupled position. Y
In testimony whereof I have set my hand.
REINHOLD sZELTNsKI.
