To couple two cars, it is only'necessary to operate one of the two couplings. Upon the cars belng run upon one another, the partly opened coupling eyes 70, 2' of one car are moved over the heart-shaped coupling hook I) of the other car until they engage in the upper and lower mouths thereof by action of the coil springs n, 0 (Figs. 6 and 8). To secure the coupling in its locked position, the slide a is retracted so that the coupling eyes cannot move out-of the hook (Fig. 9).
The uncoupling is effected by an'operation I of the parts in reverse direction, the keys g operated by the hand cranks 1" serving then to lift the coupling eyes out of the hook. Freferably, said hand cranks can-be locked in any position.
What I claim, is I 1. In an automatic railway coupling, the combination of a draw-bar, a heart-shaped double coupling hook, a slide on said draw bar adapted to be adjusted thereon in longitudinal direction, pivotalcoupling eyes on said slide having their ends extended beyond their pivots, and coil springs attached to said latter extensions and acting to keep said eyesin closed position. I
2. In a railway coupling as specified in claim 1, longitudinally guided and slidable keys for either opening or closing said coupling eyes.
3. In a railway coupling as specified in claim 1, a fixed parallel guidefor'said cou-' pling eyes for closing the same in their uncoupled position. Y
