F. W. FRENCH 1 CONTAINER Filed June 29, 1925 Patented Aug. 2l, 1928.

UNITED STATES FREDERICK W. FRENCH, OF OAKLAND, CALIFORNIA.

CONTAINER.

Application filed June 29, A1926.

The present invention has reference to containers especially designed for use in shippingor storing fragile articles suoli as electric light bulbs, i'adio tubes, eggs or the like.

rIhe primary object of the invention is to provide a device of this character which may be stamped from a single sheet of material so that when folded, a combined support and container will tbe provided, the support being of a construction to hold the article contained therein, in spaced relation with the wall of the container.

A further object of the invention is to provide a device of this character which, when used for containing electric light bulbs, may be positioned in such a y'ay that the bulb may be screwed into an electric light socket to test he bulb prior to unwrapping the saine.

A still further' object of the invention is to provide a container which when used for containing eggs, may be positioned over a candle, while the egg is in the container thereby making it unnecessary to remove the egg from its container to candle the saine.

lVith the foregoing and other objects in view which will appear as the desci'iption proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being` understood that chan in the precise embodiment of the invent-ion herein disclosed, may be made within the scope of what is claimed, without departing from the spirit of the invention.

Referring to the drawing:

Figure l is a perspective view illustrating a container constructed in accordance with the present invention as in a partly folded condition.

Figure 2 is a vertical sectional view through the container.

Figure 3 is a sectional view taken on line 3-3 of Figure 2.

Figure 4 is a view illustrating a blank from which the container is formed.

Referring to the drawing in detail, the blank `from which the container is constructed, is formed preferably of cardboard material and cut by a stamping machine in such a way as to provide an elongated section 5 and an end section 6, the end section being cut on the lines 7 and 8 to provide supports 9 formed with central openings 10 for the reception of the electric light bulb, or article to be supported by the device.

Serial No. 119,395.

Dotted lines indicated at 11 ai'e provided adjacent to the cuts 8 and indicate the places where the supports 9 are to be folded inwardly, when moved to their active positions, and since the supports are foldable at a peintin spaced relation with the side edges of the elongated section 5, spaces ai'e left above and below the supports 9 when the blank is folded to protect the ends of the article supported within the device as clearly shown by Figure 3 of the drawing.

Dotted lines indicated at l2 extend transversely across the section 5 and indicate points wherein the section is folded to provide the sides ofthe container.

The supports are also formed in such a way as to provide a plurality of tongues 13 and le, the tongues le being designed to pass within slots l5 formed adjacent to the free end of the section 5.

Slots 16 are formed in the section 5 in a manner as shown by Figure ll, which slots, when the blank is folded fall opposite to the tongues 13 which are passed into the slots to hold the container in a folded condition.

From the foregoing it will be seen that due to this construction, a person may screw a bulb supported within the container, into a lamp soclretlto test the bulb prior to uuwrapping the container to remove the bulb, and should ing an egg, it will be seen that the device with the egg' therein, maybe held over a candle to candle the egg before removing it from its container.

l claim:

A lamp wrapper comprising a sheet of material including four side walls, an end member forming a part of the wrapper, inwardly benda'ble extensions forming a part of the end member, said end member havingslits separatingI the extensions from the end member throughout portions of the lengths of the extensions, said slits defining tongues when the lateral extensions are bent inwardly, tongues formed on the edges of the eX- tensions, the side walls having' slots to receive the tongues when the side walls are Vbent around `the extensions, and said extensions having openings to support a lamp therein.'

In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own, I have hereto affixed my signature.

FREDERICK w. FRENCH.
