RAYMOND A. CHILES, OFSPOKANE, WASHINGTON.
MITTEN.
Application filed May 25,
The present invention relates to improvements in mittens by means of which means are provided for facilitating the use of the finger and thumb of a hand enclosed by the mitten. In carrying out my invention the hand portion of the mitten and the thumb portion thereof are provided with slits through which the thumb and the index or first finger may be passed in order that an object may be readily grasped or to facilitate in other ways the use of the thumb or both the thumb and finger.
In fashioning and constructing the mitten a lining of suitable type is used, and this linin is also provided with slits that correspon with the slits in the outer portion of the mitten. ity of the mitten in excluding cold air from its interior when worn, the slits in the outer portion of the mitten and in the lining or inner portion, although corresponding in number and arrangement, are specially disposed in order that the lining may close the slits in the outer portion of the mitten and also that the outer portion of the mitten may close the slits in the lining or inner portion. In this manner the utility of the mitten is preserved, its deformation of parts is prevented, and facile means are provided to insure the use of the index finger and thumb when desired. 7
In the accompanying lustrated one complete example, and a slight modification thereof, of the physical embodiment of my invention, wherein the parts are combined and arranged according to the best mode I have thus far devised for the practical application of the principles of my invention.
Figure 1 is a perspectiveview showing the index finger and thumb of the left hand protruding through the slitted portions of the left hand mitten.
Figure 2 is a face view of the right hand mitten, with the thumb turned back to disclose the slits in the body and thumb portions of the mitten.
Figure 3 is a view similar to Figure 2 but showing a slightly "modified form of the mitten.
In order to preserve the util drawings I have il-' 1927. Serial No. 194,167.
Figure 4: is a perspective view of the right hand mitten, partly broken away for convenience of illustration.
Figure 5 is a detail view showing the staggered arrangement of the slits in the outer portion of the mitten and its inner portion or lining.
The mitten 1 is of usual and suitable material and fashioned in customary manner with the wristband 2, thumb portion3, and 0 an inner portion or lining 4 of suitable material.
V The inner parts of the mitten at theindex finger portion and the thumb portion are provided with slits, the index portion of the o5 mitten being slitted at 5 and 6 and the thumb portion at 7.
The slits extend horizontally and the slits 5 and 6 are spaced apart to permit selective use when it is desired to protrude the index 7 finger through the slits for use. The slit 7 is located in. the thumb portion to permit the bend of the thumb freedom of motion in co-action with the index finger which protrudes through one of the slits 5 or 6 of the palm of the mitten. I
The slits 8 and 9 in the palm portion of the lining and slit 10 in the lining portion of the thumb, it will be noted in Figure 2, e do not register with their complementary. slits in the outerportion of the mitten and thumb, but they are in position for ready access for the thumb. and finger, which may be passed therethrough with facility and then passed through the slits of the outer portion of the mitten.
As shown in Figures 2 and 3 the slits in the outer portion of the mitten are closed by the limng portion thus excluding cold air from passing directly through the slits 9O of the outer and inner parts, and this stag gered arrangement of the slits in the outer and inner parts of the mitten prevents the Walls of the slits becoming deformed by passage of the finger and thumb. In Figure 3 one of the slits 11 in the palm portion of the mitten is arranged longitudinally of the index finger, adjacent to the dotted slit 8 in the lining of the mitten, and it will be apparent that this arrangement has advantages in preventing deformation of the walls of the slits and in the preservation of the appearance of the mitten.
Having thus fully described my invention, what Ielaim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is- A mitten having a finger-slit and a thumbslit and linings for the mitten and its thnmh portion, and said linings having slits there- 10 in for use With the finger slit and thumb slit, but spaced therefrom.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature.
RAYMOND A. CHILES.
