Application filed June 3,
This invention relates to machine tools and more particularly to manual feeding mechanism such as is commonly provided for adjustable slides and other similar constructions in such tools; These adjustable slides are commonly so constructed that they may be set at different angles relative to the axisof the work, and may even be swungto a position parallel to the work axis or at a slight angle thereto.
When thus adjusted, the hand wheel for the feed screw of the adjustable slide is frequently in an inaccessible osition, or in a position in which it inter eres with other parts of the machine. This is patricularly the case with the compound tool rest of an engine lathe in which the feed handle for the compound slide, when the slide is in certain positions, interferes seriously with the regular cross feed handle.
It is the general object of my invention to provide a construction by which the dis-' advantages above indicated may be easily and effectively avoided.
With this general object in view, one important feature of my invention relates to the provision of a plurality of operative positions orstations for the feed handle of an adjustable slide, from any one of which positions the feed screw may be effectively operated.
More specifically, in the preferred form, I provide a detachable feed handle which may be selectively applied at several different points on the adjustable slide.
My invention further relates to arrangements and combinations of parts which will be hereinafter described and more particularly pointed out in the appended claim.
A preferred form of the invention is shown in the drawings in which Fig. 1 is a plan view of portions of a compound tool restfor an engine lathe, embodying my invention;
Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional elevation of the tool rest, taken along the line 2-2 in Fig. 1; and
Fig. 8 is a transverse sectional elevation, taken along the line 3-3 in Fig. 1.
Referring to the drawings, I have shown a portion of the bed 10 of an engine lathe, having a tool carriage 11 slidable axially of the work in guide-ways thereon. A slide plate 12 is mounted in guide-ways on the 1926. Serial No. 113,575.
angular swivel plate 15 is provided with a nut 18 (Fig. 2) in which is threaded a feed screw or shaft 19, rotatable in a bearing portion'20 of the slide 17.
A graduated collar 21 is freely rotatable on the. shaft 19 but may be clamped against a shoulder 22 on the shaft by a binding nut 23. The collar 21 and nut 23 are separated by a washer 24 which iskeyed to the shaft and is consequently non-rotatable thereon. By this construction the collar 21 may be secured in any desired angular position on the shaft 19. The graduations thereon cooperate with a fixed index line on the tool slide, as indicated in Fig. 1.
The outer end 25 of the feed screw or shaft 19 is provided with a keyway 26 and is adapted to detachably receive a handle 27.
All of the parts thus far described are of the usual construction and in themselves involve no essential novelty.
My invention relates more particularly to the provision of additional mechanism for rotating the feed screw 19. For this purpose, a spiral gear 30.is fixed to the feed screw 19 and is engaged by a second spiral gear 31 mounted on a cross shaft 32 (Fig. 3) rotatable in hearings in the head or end portion 34 of the slide 17. The outer portion of the bearing is formed as a cap or casing cover 35, detachably secured to the end portion 34.
At the ends of the cross shaft 32, portions 36 and 37 are provided, each having a keyway 38 adapted todetachably receive the handle 27. The spiral gears 30 and 31 are preferably of the same size and pitch, so that angular movement of the cross shaft 32 causes equal angular movement of the feed screw 19.
With the construction above described, it will be evident that the handle 27 may be selectively applied to the portion 25 of the feed screw 19, or to the portion 36 or the portion 37 of the cross shaft 32. The opera tor may thus select any one of three different positions for the feed handle 27, choosing that position in which the handle is most easily accessible and in which it causes the least interference with other parts of the machine. 7
If the machine is swung to the position shown in Fig. 1, the handle may be placed on the part 36 of the cross shaft as indicated, or it may be applied to the part 25 of the feed screw 19.
If the slide is swung to a mid-position, substantially perpendicular to the work axis, the handle may desirably be placed on one end or the other of the cross shaft, as the front position would interfere with convenient operation of the handle 14 of the regular cross feed.
In any other position of the slide. one or more convenient positions for, operation may be selected in accordance with the convenience and habits of the operator.
It will be noted, however, that the indicating collar 21 is mounted directly on the feed screw 19, so that any back-lash in the wise than as set forth in the claim, but what I claim is 2-- In a machine tool, an adjustable slide, a feed screw therefor, a cross shaft in said slide positively connected to said feed screw and a detachable feed handle, said feed screw and said eross shaft each having provision to detachably receive said handle, and a graduated collar effective to show the exact angular position of said feed screw mounted directly upon said feed screw and freely rotatable thereon, said shaft being provided with a shoulder, a binding nut, and a washer keyed thereto, whereby said collar may be clamped in any desired position on said feed screw.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto afiixed my signature.
