Y While this invention relates generally to Y whereby this hole may be reopened which means is particularly adapted to include .as certain of its elements standard commercial mechanisms such as the actuating motor.
The hole forming means constitutes gener-` ally three elements, namely, the hole opening punch, a motor preferably of the pneu- `matic type, andv means actuated by the Amotor for imparting an Impact to the punch both during insertion and withdrawal of the vpunch from the drill steel hole.l A
further Aobject ofthe invention is to provide improved impact means whereby the same is Vcompletely operative from only one end of the actuating motor and to have such Ameans so arranged that impact stressesare `not transmitted through any of the motor mechanism as far as it can possibly be eliminated. A further object is to provide improved means whereby when the punch has completed its hole opening' operation the impact forces may be imparted thereto in a rearwarddirection merely by the reverse Vmovement, of a hand operated feed lever, al-
though it will be clear that any other sort of mechanism could be used for causing the impact forces to be imparted in either direc-.

An openingV l5 provided in the boss receives the shank A collar 19 formed on and adjacent the punch shank 16 is clamped between the boss 14 and a collar 181 the latter having threaded engagement with the boss 14; and as a result, the punch 17 is firmly secured within the 'opening 15. Projecting upwardly from the rear end of the base 12 is an impact portion 20 having a semi-cylin` drical recess 21 while a removable cap 22 is secured to the portion 20 as by screws 23,

To impart animpact to the anvil mechanism by the motor, a hammer element 24 is formed on the outer end of the piston rod 10.

A drill steel'hole opening mechanism comprising a support, a hammering motor carried thereby and comprising a reciprocable hammer element adapted to strike a. series of blows7 a hole opening tool, and an anvil associated with said tool, said anvil being carried by said support so as to receive repeated blows from the hammer elcment of said hammering motor and to move on said support relative to said hammering motor during hammering of said tool, said anvil being disposed only on the side of the motor toward the tool.
