lily invention relates to new and useiiul improvements in an adjustable combined sound hon and radiophone, and has tor its primary object to produce a structure combining a radio loud spealrer unit with a sound boa: ot a tallring machine and to so arrange the parts that the magnet element is adjustable relative to the diaphragm in order to regulate the sound produced by the radio loud spealrer unit.
ilinother object oi this invention is to provide a radio receiver, such as a loud spealrer unit and the hire with a simple and etl'ective means tor adjusting the magnet element rclative to the diaphragm.
With these ends inview, this invention consists in the details of construction and combination oi elements hereinafter set iiorth and then specifically designated by the claims.
in order that those chilled in the art to which this invention appertains, may understand how to malre and use the same, i will describe its construction in detail;, reierring i by numerals to the accompanying drawing iorming a part o'l this application, in which 1-- Fig. l, is a sectional elevation oil an adjustable combined sound box and radiophone embodying my improvements.
Fig. 2, is an inner -lace view oi the radio receiver magnet element and its component or corelated parts.
in carrying out my invention as here embodied, 2 represents the casing oil a reproducer or tallring machine sound hon of any desirable or well lrnown construction but more articularly shown as embodying certain eatures covered by my. patent applications Serial Number tlb,i88,iiled November 23rd, 1923 and Serial Number l13,4l72, tiled May l5th, 192 i, and in this casing is suitably mounted the diaphragm 3 oi any well lrnown or approved construction produced from any suitable material and constructed so as to be attracted by magnets as will be hereinafter more -hilly explained. Well lrnown terms of diaphragms suitable it'or this use are described in llnited titates patents to A. M. Dolbear, lie. l99,04i1, January 8., i878 and Alexander Gr. Bell, l lo. Q01,- l-88, March 19, 1878. Connected with the diaphragm is a stylus mounting l to receive the stylus 5 which coacts with a talking machine record so as to transmit the vibrations to the dia brag-m.
in one face oi the casing is an opening h for connection with a suitable horn of a tallring machine while in the. opposite lace oi the casing is another opening 7 tor the till insertionol a magnet element it which with the diaphragm 8. malres up or completes the radioreceiver such as a loud speaher unit and this element inc udes the electromagnets 9, the pole pieces ill of which are adaptllli ed for coaction with the diaphragm 3 to cause the usual vibrations to be set up in said diaphragm due to the pulsations oi electrical energy passing through the mag nets as is well understood in the art. llhe body portion or container 11 of the electromagnets is 0i circular formation, as plainly shown in Fig. 2. and is enteriorly threaded as at 12. it isto be understood that the container or body ll oi the magnet element is oi less diameter than the opening 7' so as to freely pass in and out oi said opening and in order to move said magnet element relative to the diaphragm 3 in order to regu" late the distance between the electromagnet W and the diaphragm ll provide an adjusting member 13 which is also oil circular tormetion and interiorly threaded tor threaded engagement with the magnet element it. haid adjusting member 18 is oil suihcient at length to be readily gripped by an operator tor rotation thereo'l to move the magnet element, it being understood that the adjusting member 13 is rotatably mounted on the casing of the reproducer while the magnet no element is held against rotation but permitted to move to and line. In order to accomplish this the adjusting member 13 is provided with an annular exterior flange it which rests against the outer lace oi the en reproducer casing and held a ainst displacement by a collar 15 having holes 16 therethrough for the reception of suitable iastening devices such. as screws 17 passing through the collar and threaded into the ire reproducer casing. Said collar 15 includes an inwardly projecting flange 18 which overlaps the Eiange 1a of the adjusting member thereby permitting rotation of the latter while preventing lateral or longitudinal lot movement thereof. The magnet element 8 is prevented from rotation while permitting a longitudinal movement thereof by forming a key way 19 in the body or container of said ma et element while with said key way registers a key 20 fastened within the opening 7 of the reproducer casing in any suitable manner.
The magnet element 8 is provided with the necessary binding posts, one of which is shown and designated by the numeral 21 for connection of the necessary conductors of the magnet element which conductors lead from the radio receiving set.
From the foregoing description it will be obvious that if the device is used in connection with a talking machine record the sounds will be reproduced by the diaphragm through the medium of the st Ins and the stylus mounting and said sounds carried oil through the opening 6 in the well known ordinary manner but when it is desired to use the same device for reproducing radio broadcasts the pulsations of electrical ener set up in the electromagnets will vibrate t e diaphragm 3 and cause the reproduced sound to be transmitted through the opening 6 to the horn with which the device is connected. As-it is ofttimes desirable to regulate or modulate the sounds roduced by the radio receiver or loud speafier unit this may be readily accomplished by rotating the adj usting'member 13 in the desired direction for movin the magnet element 8 in or out which wil change the distance between the electromagnet pole pieces and the diaphragm 3 and thereby increasin or decreasing the strength of the transmitted sounds.
Of course I do not wish to be limited to the exact details of construction as herein shown as these may be varied within the limits of the appended claims without departing from the spirit of my invention.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and useful is 1. The combination with a reproducer including a casing having openings in opposite faces, one of which forms a communication between the interior of the reproducer casing and a horn, a diaphragm and a stvlus mounting, of a magnet element locate in the other opening of the reproducer casing forcoaction with the diaphragm, an adjusting member having threaded engagement with the magnet element, means to rot'atably mount said members on the reproducer casing, and means to prevent rotation of the magnet element while permitting movement thereof relative to the diaphragm.
2. In a device of the character stated, a casing having, an opening therein, a diaphragm within said casing. a magnet element projecting through the opening for coaction with the diaphragm, said magnet element including an exteriorly threaded body, electromagnets and means for connection with the audio circuit of a radio receiving set, means to prevent rotation of said magnet element, and means rotatably mounted on the casing and having threaded connection with the magnet element whereby when said adjusting member is manually rotated the magnet element is adjusted relative to the diaphragm.
3. In a device of the character stated, a casing having an opening therein, a diaphragm within said casing, a magnet element projecting. through the opening for coaction with the diaphragm, said magnet element including an exteriorly threaded body, electromagnets and means for connection with the audio circuit of a radio receiving set, means to prevent rotation of said magnet element, an adjusting member having threaded connection with the body of the magnet element,
and a collar secured to the casing and coacting with the adjusting member to rotatably mount said adjusting member on said casing, said adjusting member adapted to be manually rotated for moving the magnet element relative to the diaphragm, as and for the purpose specified.
In testimony where of, I have hereunto afiixed my signature.
CHARLES J. DEL MARMOL.
