IMPROVEMENT; IN CAR-STARTERS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 167,928, dated September 21, 1875; application filed August 26, 1875.

To all whom it may concern: I

Be it known that I, LEWIS G. PARKER, of Robinson, Brown county, Kansas, have invented new and useful Improvements in Car- Sta-rters, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.

The invention relates to devices that have been classed as car-starters, and has for its object the production of an implement of improved construction, and especially one which, while readily operated with enhanced results, is cheap, durable, and easily kept in order.

Figure 1 is a bottom view of a device embodying the elements of the invention. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of same. Fig. 3 is a side view of the standards.

In the accompanying drawings, A denotes the frame, which consists of two parallel bars connected at their centers by the cross-bar B,

upon which is rigidly secured the standards 0 0. Between the upper ends of the standards 0 is secured the spool D, the end of the axle of which extends beyond the standard 0, and is there provided with a cog-wheel, A, the teeth of which mesh with those of a smaller wheel, B, situated upon the axle O, which is provided with the crank E.

The dog D is to regulate the movement of the cogs.

Upon the spool D is wound the rope or chain F, which is provided at its end with the hook H. The standards are provided with the brace-rods I, for the purpose of securing them in position. The rear ends of the parallel bars A are connected by the cross-bar J, which is provided with a spring-bulfer, L, or other device suitable for preventing the wheels of the cars from running upon the frames. Upon the outside of the frames A, near their rear ends, are pivoted the hooks M with their shanks toward the buffer L, in such manner as to insure to them a free vertical vibratory motion. The frames A, near the standards 0, are provided with the uprights a, in which the axle a: of the lever b has its bearings.

In the forward end of the frames A are cut the slots cl, within which the grooved pulley- Wheels 0 are eccentrically pivoted, and the should be the width of the railway-rail upon which the device is to be placed.

The device is to be'placed upon oneof the rails of a railway-track at a suitable distance from the cars. The lever b, which is now in an upright position, must be pushed forward, thereby causing the wheels 6 to clamp the rail upon which the device is placed. The

hooks M are let down so as to catch upon the ties of the railway-track, thereby holding the device in a fixed position. The rope F is now unwound, one end of it being attached to the car to be started. N ow, by operating, the spool, the rope is wound thereon, and the car gradually drawn toward the buffer L.

The rollers n are provided for the purpose of assisting in moving the device.

What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. In a car-starter, the frames A, in combination with the wheels 6 and hooks M, as set forth. I

2. The spool D, lever b, in combination with a rope or chain,F, as specified.

3. The combination of the frames A, standard G, spool D, lever b, hooks M, and drawrod M, as set forth.

4. In a car-starter, the combination of th wheels 6 and draw-rod m, substantially as specified.
