CORPORATION OF PENNSYLVANIA.
PIPE CUTTER.`
Application mea February 19, 1923. serial No. 619,882.
This invention is designed to improve the construction of pipe cutters. lVith such cutters the shanks are subjected to very severe torsional strains and the present invention makes a more rigid shank than that now ordinarily employed. At the same time the construction lends .itself to convenience of manufacture with relation to other parts of the structure. Further features and details will appear from the specification and claim.
The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings as tollowsz* Fig. 1 shows a central section through the cutter,
Fig. 2 a sect-ion on the line 2-2 in Fig. l, and
Fig. 3 a side elevation of the cutter.
1 marks the shank, 2 the nose extending from the shank, 3 a sliding cutter head, and et a socket in the sliding head for receiving the head 5 of the screw 6. A screw 7 locks the head 5 in the socket 4. The screw 6 extends through a nut 8 rand the end of thev screw is provided with a handle 9.
The nut has a tenon 10 which .extends through a transverse opening l1 in the shank l and the end of this tenon is headed down at 12, thus securing the nut on the shank.
The shank is rectangular in cross section with topA and bottom walls 13 and side walls 14, the shank having a longitudinal opening l5 within these walls. VThese walls and this openingare continued into the nose 2, the opening being extended by way of a slot 16 through the inner facey of the nose. This manner of forming the opening is of particular advantage in the manufacture in that the opening 15 may be readily cored and the core supported through the slot 16. At the same time the slot 16 forms an opening for receiving the cutter wheels 17 whichy are arranged within this slot and mounted in the nose. The usual cutter 3a is mounted on the head 3.
lVhat I claim as new is In a pipe cutter, the combination of a shank of rectangular cross-section having integral top, hottom andl side walls with a longitudinal cavity within the walls; a cutter head slidingly mounted on the shank; a nose extending from the shank and a slot opening on the inner surface of the nose, said sl'ot communicating with the openf ing in the shank and forming a means or' communication to the opening through which a core forming the opening may he supported; and cutter wheels arranged in. the slot and mounted in the nose.
In testimony whereofl have hereunto set my hand.
JOHN D. MERRIFIELD.
