, This invention relates to card index, or record devices. f
Heretotore cardindex or record devices have been provided comprising generally a series of hinged record or index'ydisplay ng members arranged substantially flat'wlse on a tray or support and having means for holding the cards or displaying members n overlapping arrangement with the edges of 10 the cards projecting one beyond another, whereby the index or recordmatter ad acent the edges of the cards may be read ly viewed. Heretofore, this overlapping arrangement or spacing of the cards or record displaying members has been attained, for example by parts on such members which are secured to and adapted .to extend angularly away from said members to permit said members to nest by inserting the ,edge of one member between another member and its secured part. Another form ofmemberis provided with a part against which another member and its part is adapted to abut to efi'ect the desired spacing. Such cards orrecord displaying members have usually been provided with parts engaging portions at the sides of the tray or supports, wherebythe cards or members are held in the tray in either the nested or abutting and overlapping arrangement. Certain disadvantages have attended the use of structures such as described in that, in use, the securing portions of the record displaying members which cooperate with the side portions of the tray or support become bent, resulting in portions of the record d1splaying member being ralsed or displacedfrom the normal level of the cards, centrally of the tray or support. Thus, by misalinement of portions of the record displaying member, ,as the record displaying members are, individually slid or moved on the tray, the members do not contact or nest properly with one another, and the desired overlapping relationship is not consistently maintained.
The objects of the present invention are ,to provide a card index in which the hinged cardsor record displaying inembersare positively guided to the desired nestingorinterengaging positions; also to provide a. card index in which the portions of the hinged cards or card displaying members engaging the supporting parts on ,thertray or supports, are prevented from becoming distortabovemnnx DEVICE.

ed and in which the interengaging parts of whichcards or record displaying members of greate'rrthan usual width may be used and the cards or record displaying members still be maintained in proper overlapping spaced relation; and also to provide improvements in card and record devices in the other respects hereinafter set 'forth and claimed, c 1 1 In the drawings:

3 is a fragmentary, transverse sectional elevation illustrating one of the steps in the method of attaching the cards or card holders to the tray or support.
Fig {.l: is a plan view of another form of i a record device having means according to the present invention :for attaching the cards to atray or, support.
Fig. 5' is a longitudinal section on line 55, Fig. 1, of the record device.
Fig. 6 is a similar section on line 6-6, Fig.' 4. M
Fig. v7 is a rear elevation of a portion of a holder of slightly different form to that shown in Figs. 2, 3, 5 and 6. r Y
Fig. "8 is a rearelevation of another slightly modified form of holder.
F ig. 9 is a section through an index device including the form shown in Fig. 8.
111' this description, the term .record displaying member is used to designate a card on which record or index matter may be inscribed or displayed, or a separate holder displaying member projects beyond the edge of the record displaying members next In the particular embodiment shown, the record displaying members consist of body portions 12 which are hinged to lugs 13 by means of weakened or perforated hinge lines 13" so that the record displaying members are connected to the slide or support. The slide or support is preferably formed with side flanges 1A beneath which the outer ends 15 of the lugs 13 engage. Inthe particular form of record device illustrated in Fig. 5, the lug of each record displaying member is adapted to nest between the lug and the body portion of the next record displaying member, whereby those members are held'in the proper overlapping relation. As illustrated in Fig. 2, the record displaying members may be removed from or inserted in'the tray by flexing or bending the lugs so that the outer ends or tongues 15 of the lugs are permitted to escape from or are inserted under the side flanges 14 of the tray or supports. 7 v
In order to secure positive guidance for the record displaying members and their lugs or attaching means as they are moved in the tray, so that proper nesting or interengagement of the parts will be'effected to secure the desired overlapping relation, means are provided, preferably between the side edges of the record displaying members for preventing buckling or distortion of the record displaying members or their lugs,
and preferably for causing these members to travel in a common plane in their sliding movements in the slide or support 11. In the embodiment shown for this purpose, there are provided intermediate opposing lug tongues, or members such for example as indicated at 16, which engage suitable and preferably fixed parts on the slide or support. In the embodiment shown, the op positely directed flanges 17 of the rail 18 constitute these fixed parts, these rails being suitably secured, in the particular embodiment illustrated, to the bottom 19 ofthe tray. The intermediate lugs cooperate with the side or outer lugs or tongues 15 and insure movement of the record displaying members constituting the series in the tray in the same plane, thereby preventing buckling or distortion of the record displaying members or their attaching lugs and providing positive guides to insure proper interengagement of the parts so as to secure the desired overlapping arrangement. I
Fig.3 illustrates the method of engaging the intermediate lugs 16 with the flanges 17 on the tray or slide. To effect such engagement, the record displaying member 10 may be flexed as shown in Fig. 3 and then the ends released so that the intermediate lugs will take a position underneath the flanges 17, as shown in Fig. 2. As illustrated at the right hand side of Fig. 2, the end or side edge lugs are then inserted under the side rails or flanges 14 of the tray by flexing will rest beneath the side flanges or rails, as
shown at the left hand sideof Fig. 2.
In the modilied form shown. in Figs. 4
A and-6, the body portion 12 of the record displaying members are hinged to spacing lugs of somewhat different structure from those shown in the other figures, these lugs 13 constituting relatively thick bodies of mate rial and being adapted to rest in a plane parallel with the tray bottom with their edges in contact as shown in Fig. 6, and in substantially horizontal'alinement. In this form the intermediate flanges or rails 17 may, as illustrated, be fixed to the bottom 19 of the tray, to engage intermediate tongues 16 of the attaching lugs and function in the manner as described for the other figures of drawing.
As illustrated in Figs. '2 and 9, the side flanges 14 of the tray preferably extend inwardly of the body of the tray and are set down a distance below theupper edges of the tray sides. This permits of the provision on the record displaying member of means for overlapping the inner edge portions 20 of the set down flanges whereby the record displaying members are held more firmly in desired alinement.. For this purpose, referring to Figs. 8 and 9, the outer edge portion of the record displaying member may be provided with upper and lower tongues or cooperating portions 21 and 22. These tongues overlap the side rails or flanges of the tray or slide, and in combination with the intermediate tongues, ensure that the record displaying members will be moved in a definite plane when shifted or slid on the support and will always nest or engage properly to maintain the desired spaced relation. At the same time the record displaying members are so firmly secured to the support or slide that the slide or support maybe lifted or moved from place to place by utilizing one or more of the record displaying members as a handle, the connections between the record displaying members and the tray or slide permitting this to be done without disengaging the rec- 0rd displaying members from the tray or slide. y y
The form shown in Fig. 7 displays a modification in the form of the inner tongue portions over the form shown in Figs. 1, 2, 3, 8 and 9. In thisform, the lug member 13 is not severed intermediately of its ends but is continuous and is provided with a recessed portion providing the intermediate tongues 16*. r
As shown in Figs. 5, 7 and 8, the lug of thefrecord displaying member is provided with beveled or angular edges 24;. These angular edges make the lugs more nearly rigid and prevent buckling or unintentional flexing thereof out of a straight line. This is also for the further purpose of facilitating nesting and proper inter-engagement of the record displaying members to effect the proper spaced arrangement of the members. It further strengthens the intermediate and outer tongues of the lugs and provides a more firm connection of the tongue to the tray or support.
I claim as my invention 1. A record-displaying member having a plurality of coplanar retaining tongues adjacent one edge thereof, one of said tongues being positioned adjacent one side ed e of said displaying member, and another oi said tongues being positioned adjacent the opposite side edge of said displaying member, a pair of said tongues being oppositel directed and positioned intermediately 0 said side edges, and a support having parts for engaging said tongues to maintain said displaying member on said support.
