A. C- SCHMOHL ADJUSTABLE SILL STEP FOR RAILWAY DUMP CARS Filed June 2, 1927 Patented July 17, 1928.
UNITED STATES ALFRED O. SCHMOHL, OF BEAVER FALLS, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR TO KOPIEL DUSTRIAL CAR AND EQUIPMENT CGM?ANY,
CORPORATION OF PENNSYLVANIA.
OF PITTSBURGH, PENN SYLVANIA,' A.
Application filed June 2,
An object of my invention is to provide railway dump cars with an adjustable sill step to be used' as such in transit over interchange roads and which can be swung out of position and against the car body so as to clear obstructions on the ground during the dumping operation.
This and other objects will be apparent from the following description.
Referring to the drawing in which like reference characters refer to like parts, Fig. 1 is an end view of the adjustable sill step showing a slot and stop on one side of the step, the other side being identical; Fig. 2 is a front view, and Fig. 3 is a plan view of the same.
Referring now in detail to the drawing the reference character 1 indicates the vertical members of the step with the vertical slots 2, the transverse members 3 are attached to the members 1 and the whole is suspended on the fulcrum bolts 8 from the sills 4 by suitable hangers 5 which also contain the stops 7.
Then the car is in transit over interchange roads the step is locked in an operative position by the bolts 6 passing through the slots 2, and the stops 7 When the cars are ready,
to discharge their contents the bolts 6 are removed and step is swung outwardly and upwardly on its fulcrums 8 to the dotted position shown in Fig. 1 and is then dropped in a vertical position until the fulcrum bolts 8 strike the then upper end of the slots 2 in the members 1. This allows the fulcrum end of the members 1 to engage the stops 7 and in conjunction with the body prevents any further rotation of the step. With the step in this position the car body may be tilted to discharge its contents without any possible interference between the car step and obstructions on the ground. The step remains in this clearance position during the subsequent loading and dumping operations or until such time as it is again necessary to have the use of a step on the car. This latter case is taken care of by raising the step vertically until the lower end of the slot 2 engages the fulcrum bolt 8 and the step is swung outwardly and downwardly to a ver- 1927. Serial No. 195,903.
tical position Where it is locked in the mantense ner described before and is again ready for use.
Having described my invention in. full what I desire to secure by Letters Patent is: 1.111 a dump car, an adjustable sill step composed of vertical and transverse members, said step being fulcrumed at one end to permit swinging upwardly and outwardly to I a clearance position and integral means on said step and car for automatically securing said step in clearance position. a
2. In a dump car, an adjustable sill step,
stops on said car, vertical slots in the vertical sides of said sill step at its fulcrum points, one end of said slots terminating in the fulcrum members andthe other ends adapted to be engaged with said stops, and
securing means adapted to retain said step in operative position.
3. In a dump car, an adjustable sill step having vertical slots in its vertical sides at its fulcrum points, stops on said car, said step when rotated 180 from its operative position is adapted to drop down the length of its slots and engage with said stops so as to prevent any reverse rotation.
4. The combination with a dump car of a rotatable sill step, removable means for securing said step in operative position, and integral means on said step cooperating with the step fulcrum and astop on said car, for automaticallysecuring said step when in clearance position with said operative position securing means removed.
5.'The combination with arailway dump car of a s1ll step comprising ver-tlcal memmember adjacent said fulcrum point,v a stop 7 von said car, removable locking means for engaging said slot and stop to secure said step in operative position, said step with said locking means removed and rotated to a clearance position being adapted to move the length of its slots and automatically lock in position.
In testimony whereof, I affix my signature. ALFRED C. SCHMOHL.
