UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE JOSEPH M. STORY, or CINCINNATI, OHIO.
IMPROVEMENT lN SLEIGHS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 167,627, dated September 14, 1875; application filed January 8, 1875.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, JOSEPH M. STORY, of Cincinnati, Hamilton county, State of Ohio, have invented an Improvement in Ice or Snow Sleds, of which the following is a specification My invention consists, first, in certain peculiar appliances, by which the rider is enabled to propel the sled, the appliances being so constructed and arranged to operate in such a manner that the propelling-wheel will ride over undulating surfaces without affecting the bearing of the runners upon the ice.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a sled embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the back runners.
A is the base 01' body of the sled; B, the riders seat; and O O O, the running irons or runners. 'D is the propelling-wheel armed with projecting teeth 61, to firmly engage in the face of the ice orv snow. This wheel is journaled in swinging arms E E, hinged at e to the body A, and its shaft is fitted at both ends with cranks F F, to which connecting rods G G are attached, the other ends of the latter being connected by a swiveling-joint with the hand-levers H B. By this provision of the swiveling or swinging arms E E, in
secured to the body A. This construction en ables the runners to automatically adjust themselves to undulating surfaces. The forward runner O is made, as shown, to swivel in the body A for steering purposes, and is provided with crossbar J and foot-rests K, by
which the operator is enabled to change the direction of this runner at will.
I claim l The combination of sled A B O G 0, wheel D d, swinging arms E E, cranks F F, rods G G, and hand-levers H H, as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony of which invention I hereunto set my hand.
JOSEPH M. STORY.
